Show moreThis qualitative study examines whether microblogging illustrates or contradicts the longstanding notion that the Internet allows for greater public participation in important issues, thus potentially expanding public sphere. The study analyzes 5 years of tweets about climate change between ExxonMobil and Greenpeace USA using a new hybrid, or blended methodology that combines Kenneth Burke's rhetorical analysis of cluster-agons with eight physical attributes of the Internet that Marshall Poe identified as influential in pushing societies and ideas in new directions. Clusters are also examined using Grace Poh Lyn's reflexive analysis. Additionally, the analysis also considers the use of agitative and control strategies, discursive tensions between freedom and domination, and the rhetorical use of public vernaculars. Analysis of the tweets reveals that business organizations that at first glance or in theory seem to be at odds actually share common discursive practices. They communicate about the same issues at the same or similar times using the same language for the same primary purpose-survival of the organization-while giving the impression that they are working for the good of their respective publics for environmental causes or the bottom line, or even both. The researcher concludes that although there are specific cases of microblogging in which the public benefits to some extent, those gains are either very short-lived or are more likely to exist in theory rather than practice due to the fluid nature of microblogging as well as continued organizational missteps which I call "corporate ejacking."

Show morePlasma-based diagnostics are ideal for detecting a variety of diseases because they offer a method of detection that is minimally invasive, readily available, and easy to use for monitoring patients as they progress through a disease or respond to treatment. The only serum marker for PDAC is CA19-9 which lacks specificity, has limited sensitivity, and is unreliable for early detection. It is therefore of great importance to develop a diagnostic that is viable for screening and early detection. Exosomal miRNA were determined via bioinformatics analyses and then examined in PDAC cell lines to identify markers with greatest potential. These markers were then examined in plasma from PDAC patients and control groups. Four markers, miR-93-5p, miR-339-3p, miR-425-5p, and miR-425-3p, emerged as the most viable biomarker panel with the ability to detect PDAC in 100% of the early stages (N=5) compared to CA19-9 which showed increased levels in only one patient with early stage PDAC. Additionally, the diagnostic has a specificity of 80% and a sensitivity of 94.7%, making it comparable to CA19-9, and may even be beneficial for use in conjunction with CA19-9. A plasma-based diagnostic was also developed for multi-strain HIV-1 detection utilizing the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method. LAMP primers were developed against the integrase and vpr regions of the HIV-1 genome. They were tested first in cultured HIV samples and then examined for their ability to amplify HIV-1 subtypes A-G. The integrase primer set provided a reliable means of diagnosing all 55 strains and isolates in under 30 minutes, whereas vpr was inconsistent and exhibited high variability in detecting the HIV subtypes. Our limit of detection for B-subtype with integrase was 30 viral copies/reaction. This could provide the basis for a novel, point-of-care diagnostic for use in underdeveloped regions.

As a result of this, the mobile device ends up changing the base stations or performing handover at a much higher rate. To maintain the reliability and quality of the call, it is obligatory to ascertain that the handover is performed at a proper location. If the handover is delayed or the mobile handset drags its base station, it is more probable that either the call will drop or the quality of the call will be compromised. The last thing a mobile handset user would want is to experience any of these two consequences. In this thesis we study the methods to analyze the performance ofhandover by the mobile handsets in the drive setup under test. This thesis presents a model for analyzing the performance ofhandoffbased on the measurements ofthe received signal strength indicator and the color code recorded by the mobile handset in the drive test field path. The model from the simulations is seen to yield results that agree with other research about the performance of mobile handsets.

Show moreThe focus of this research is on images extracted from surveillance videos that have a low resolution and are taken under low illumination. In recent years, great advances have been made in face recognition and many studies mention results of 80% and 90% of recognition efficiency, however, most of these studies reported results using face images under controlled conditions. Current surveillance systems are equipped with low resolution cameras and are located in places with changing illumination, as opposed to a controlled environment. To be used in face recognition, images extracted from videos need to be normalized, enlarged and preprocessed. There is a multitude of processing algorithms for image enhancement, and each algorithm faces its advantages and disadvantages. This thesis presents a novel method for image enlargement of human faces applied to low quality video recordings. Results and comparison to traditional methods are also presented.

In order to achieve this, electrodes are attached to the part of human body and an image of the conductivity or permittivity of living tissue is deduced from surface electrodes. In this thesis we have worked towards alleviating drawbacks of EIT such as estimating parameters by incorporating it in an electrode structure and determining a solution to spatial distribution of bio-impedance to a close proximity. We address the issue of initial parameter estimation and spatial resolution accuracy of an electrode structure by using an arrangement called "divided electrode" for measurement of bio-impedance in a cross section of a local tissue. Its capability is examined by computer simulations, where a distributed equivalent circuit is utilized as a model for the cross section tissue. Further, a novel hybrid model is derived which is a combination of artificial intelligence based gradient free optimization technique and numerical integration in order to estimate parameters. This arne! iorates the achievement of spatial resolution of equivalent circuit model to the closest accuracy.

This new "trybrid" system is the continuation of the solar electric vehicle which was designed and developed as an undergraduate independent study under the supervision of Dr. Roger Messenger. The work done on this thesis consists in the implementation of the existing solar electric vehicle outfitted with a fuel cell system. For this, two fuel cell systems were analyzed as possible candidates for the retrofit. Also, different hydrogen storage methods are analyzed in terms of efficiency and safety. This thesis also covers the control system utilized to manage the energy from the two different energy sources. Special attention is devoted to the method of determining the state of charge of the batteries which controls fuel cell turn on time. This first prototype shows the different functionalities and optimized features that maximize the solar energy production, and determines exactly when to turn on the fuel cell for minimum hydrogen usage.

In the context of security the analysis of human interrelations and their environment provides hints to proactively identify anomalous behavior. However, human detection is a necessary component in systems where the automatic extraction of higher level information, such as recognizing individuals' activities, is required. The human detection problem is one of classification. In general, motion, appearance and shape are the classification approaches a system can employ to perform human detection. Techniques representative of these approaches, such us periodic motion detection, skin color detection and MPEG-7 shape descriptors are implemented in this work. An infrastructure that allows data collection for such techniques was also implemented.

Show moreIn mobile ad hoc networks, it is challenging to solve the standard problems encountered in fixed network because of the unpredictable motion of mobile nodes. Due to the lack of a fixed infrastructure to serve as the backbone of the network, it is difficult to manage nodes' locations and ensure the stable node performance. The virtual mobile node (VMN) abstraction that has been applied implements an virtual mobile node that consists of a set of real nodes traveling on one predetermined virtual path to collect messages and deliver them to the destinations when they meet. It conquers the unpredictable motion with virtual nodes' predictable motion. But it encounters unavoidable failure when all the nodes leave the VMN region and stop emulating the VMN. We extend the idea of the VMN abstraction to the Multi-path Intelligent Virtual Mobile Node (MIVMN) abstraction, which allows the messages to switch between multiple Hamiltonian paths to increase the message delivery ratio and decrease the failure rate of the virtual nodes. Through simulation results we show that the MIVMN abstraction successfully meets our goals.

Show moreWireless sensor networks or WSNs continually become more common in todays world. They are able to give us a constant view into the world as they gather information and make this information more readily available. The infonnation these networks gather and contain is valuable and protecting it is of great importance. Today more and more devices are becoming wireless and mobile. This is allowing for very diverse networks to be created and they are constantly changing. Nodes in these networks are either moving to different positions or going offi ine which constantly changes the overall layout of the network. With this increasing connectivity of today's devices this opens the door for possibility for these types of networks to become targets by malicious objects designed to bring harm to the network. Many unre liable networks already face many problems such as having to optimize battety life and being deployed in areas where they can be damaged. A malicious object in this type of network has the power to destroy data and deplete the networks limited resources such as bandwidth and power. Removal of these malicious objects can also have a negative effect on these limited resources. We must find a way to remove these malicious objects in a way that minimizes loss to the network. In this paper we will look at the information survival threshold of these types of networks. Certain controllable parameters exist that directly impact the survival rate of all data in the network. We will combine this with the addition our own self-replicating objects to the network designed to neutralize their malicious counterparts. We will examine these information survival threshold parameters along with specific parameters available to the network. We shall see how these parameters affect overall survival of data in the network and their impact on our own good data.

An automated acoustic modem transmitted phase-coherent modulated sequences of identical data with 186 dB re IpPa source level, at coded rates from 4000 to 16000 bits/s with 4 or 8 kHz symbol bandwidth, three times daily for a month. A 64 channel Mills-Cross receiver array was used with horizontal and vertical beams each containing 32 and 33 elements respectively, spaced 0.03 meters apart, with a sampling frequency of 72 kHz. Source and receiver were deployed at depths of 20 meters respectively, with a 720 meter separation range. Environmental measurements of wind velocity and direction, surface wave activity, current and sound velocity profiles, and tidal measurements were performed. Results demonstrate reliable achievement of high data-rate shallow water acoustic communications using phase-coherent modulation techniques.

Show moreWith the increasing number of cellular phone service subscribers, the telecommunications service providers have placed immense emphasis on improving audio quality and ensure fewer dropped calls. Handoff behavior of all handsets is an important factor in quality of service of a mobile phone service. This thesis focuses on the analysis of large volumes of diagnostic data collected from mobile phones in the real world and the identification of aberrant behavior of a mobile handset under test by means of drive test data visualization. Our target was to identify poor mobility decisions that are made by the handsets in calls. Premature, delayed or exceedingly sensitive decisions are considered poor mobility decisions. The goal was to compare a set of behaviors from a baseline unit (one accepted to generally operate well). We were able to identify a particular call that was exhibiting a different path (talking to a different cell than expected or taking longer to move to a new cell). We designed a chi-square statistical test to evaluate the performance of specific mobile handset models. We also developed a mobility tool that evaluated the handset's performance by means of mapping the handoffs on the Google Maps. The mapping of the handoffs by means of the Google Maps were very powerful in identifying the above mentioned mobility patterns.

This is why it is important to develop a mechanism that rewards cooperative peers and punishes misbehaving peers. Modeling P2P networks as social structures can allow incentive mechanisms to be used that prevent the negative behaviors mentioned. In this thesis, we extend a social network algorithm to include credit transfer between peers in order to reduce the path length of queries. We also develop a selection strategy that involves different aspects of peer interactions in P2P networks, which is promoted by our credit transfer mechanism that discourages misbehaving peers by taking away credits that they have with good peers and transferring them to more cooperative ones. The simulation results show that our algorithm is effective in reducing the debt between peers, meaning that peers become more cooperative, and shortening the average path length to a satisfied query while increasing delivery ratio.

Show moreWe characterize Godel's philosophy of mathematics, as presented in his published works, with possible clarification and support provided by his posthumously published drafts, as being formulated by Godel as an optimistic neo-Kantian epistemology superimposed on a Platonic metaphysics. We further consider that Godel's more general philosophical worldview can also be characterized as such. We provide a philosophical interpretation of Godel's rotating universe solutions to Einstein's field equations that is contrary to Godel's own philosophical interpretation. We compare Godel's worldview with our materialistic worldview. Our materialistic worldview developed from interpreting Godelian type results, but stands in contrast to Godel's worldview. Finally, our materialistic worldview serves to further explicate, by contrast , Godel's Platonic world view.

To determine if zooxanthellae are involved in the bleaching process, I infected a single strain of sea anemone, Aiptasia pallida with zooxanthellae from different hosts. I measured expulsion of the algae from the host during 24-hour incubations at 25, 32 and 34C, as well as photosynthetic rates at these temperatures. Photosynthesis and expulsion of zooxanthellae were inversely and directly proportional to elevated temperatures, respectively. Photosynthesis and expulsion of zooxanthellae isolated from Condylactis gigantea showed the greatest sensitivity to elevated temperature when compared to other zooxanthellae tested. These results suggest that zooxanthellae have a function in the bleaching process and that this function may be related to their photosynthetic response. Thus, the differential tolerance of zooxanthellae to stress could partly explain the spatial variability characteristic of coral-bleaching episodes.

Show moreThe focus of this research is concerned with performing forecasting in technoeconomic contexts using a set of certain novel artificial neural networks (ANNs). Relevant efforts in general, entail the task of quantitatively estimating the details about the likelihood of future events (or unknown outcomes/effects) based on past and current information on the observed events (or known causes). Commensurate with the scope and objectives of the research, the specific topics addressed are as follows: A review on various methods adopted in technoeconomic forecasting and identified are econometric projections that can be used for forecasting via artificial neural network (ANN)-based simulations Developing and testing a compatible version of ANN designed to support a dynamic sigmoidal (squashing) function that morphs to the stochastical trends of the ANN input. As such, the network architecture gets pruned for reduced complexity across the span of iterative training schedule leading to the realization of a constructive artificial neural-network (CANN). Formulating a training schedule on an ANN with sparsely-sampled data via sparsity removal with cardinality enhancement procedure (through Nyquist sampling) and invoking statistical bootstrapping technique of resampling applied on the cardinality-improved subset so as to obtain an enhanced number of pseudoreplicates required as an adequate ensemble for robust training of the test ANN: The training and prediction exercises on the test ANN corresponds to optimally elucidating output predictions in the context of the technoeconomics framework of the power generation considered Prescribing a cone-of-error to alleviate over- or under-predictions toward prudently interpreting the results obtained; and, squeezing the cone-of-error to get a final cone-of-forecast rendering the forecast estimation/inference to be more precise Designing an ANN-based fuzzy inference engine (FIE) to ascertain the ex ante forecast details based on sparse sets of ex post data gathered in technoeconomic contexts - Involved thereof a novel method of .fusing fuzzy considerations and data sparsity.Lastly, summarizing the results with essential conclusions and identifying possible research items for future efforts identified as open-questions.

Show moreFood insecurity or low-access to good quality, affordable foods affects minority women and children disproportionately (Herndon, 2014; Ivers & Cullen, 2011; Lee, 2012; Wigg Dammann & Smith, 2009). Linked to the rise in nutritionrelated and other health problems afflicting these populations (e.g., malnutrition, obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure among others) (Azarbad & Gonder- Frederick, 2010; Bove & Olson, 2006; Larson, Story, & Nelson, 2009), this issue has been gaining some attention. Still, programs combating weight and “weightrelated disorders” generally focus on individualistic solutions (Orbach, Bodies 2009)—such as increasing daily exercise and vilifying certain diets. Dismissing important spatial and systematic aspects, these approaches rather perpetuate problematic socio-political, economic, medical, and ideological biases informing our understanding of poverty, health and food. This project offers and alternative perspective. Most importantly, it 1) scrutinizes sexist, classist and racist constructs across the literature on overweight, obesity, poverty, and health; 2) examines the relationship between our food system, the growth in nutrition-related diseases, and the intersections of gender, race, and class within food insecure communities; and 3) analyzes interview data looking for important and resonating themes that could guide the development of more efficient local food access strategies. As this study shows, these women’s experiences, knowledge, and strategies have the potential of, not only helping eradicate food insecurity across South Florida, but also combating a great number of the nutrition-related health problems afflicting these populations.

Show moreSentiment analysis of tweets is an application of mining Twitter, and is growing in popularity as a means of determining public opinion. Machine learning algorithms are used to perform sentiment analysis; however, data quality issues such as high dimensionality, class imbalance or noise may negatively impact classifier performance. Machine learning techniques exist for targeting these problems, but have not been applied to this domain, or have not been studied in detail. In this thesis we discuss research that has been conducted on tweet sentiment classification, its accompanying data concerns, and methods of addressing these concerns. We test the impact of feature selection, data sampling and ensemble techniques in an effort to improve classifier performance. We also evaluate the combination of feature selection and ensemble techniques and examine the effects of high dimensionality when combining multiple types of features. Additionally, we provide strategies and insights for potential avenues of future work.
