Show moreMy objective in this dissertation was to understand the processes leading to incompletion of the high profile cross-border deals. A conceptual framework was developed which suggests that announcement of a cross-border merger and acquisition (M&A) deal starts a string of institutional processes that leads to incompletion of the bid. I proposed that less powerful host country actors threatened by the MNC’s bid proposal politicize the transaction turning the deal into a transgression. These actors publicize this transgression, initiating a scandal, to gather support of multiple audiences in their attempts to thwart the threat that the MNC poses. Thanks to their efforts in appealing to audiences and publicization of the deal as a transgression, these actors mobilize audiences who reveal hostile reaction against the MNC and the proposed bid. Such mobilization and hostile reaction, in turn, lead to proposed bid’s incompletion. Qualitative analysis results based on a sample of seven high profile cross-border transactions provided support for the conceptualized processes, namely politicization, scandal, mobilization and hostile reaction, while indicating a different order of process progression compared to the linear one conceptualized. I found that in all cases the process of scandal subsumed the other processes that kept scandal alive. In turn, scandal fed these processes giving more leverage to the mobilization efforts and/or increasing the hostility of the actors opposing the deal. The findings revealed that these processes happened simultaneously and that in cases where mobilization did not emerge, hostile reaction substituted for the lack of mobilization. Additionally, analysis showed that not only less powerful actors but also powerful actors, elites, sought to initiate a scandal when the host country political, legal or bureaucratic processes did not work for them in thwarting the deal. This dissertation by examining social construction, power and politics within the host country institutional environment in the context of high profile cross-border deals, presented a framework that explained how and why the hostility leading to deal incompletion emerges in the host country. In so doing, this dissertation strengthens institutional theory, theory of scandal, social movements theory and elite theory as powerful perspectives in international strategic -management.

Entrepreneurial capabilities are central to firms’ survival and performance. However, the role of various forms of relationships in the development and deployment of entrepreneurial capabilities remains understudied. The constellation of the two essays in this dissertation aims to offer insights about the impact of these relationships and the potential areas for future research. I investigate various aspects of entrepreneurial capabilities, such as value creation, value capture, and innovativeness. The first essay is an empirical investigation of the impact of alliances, as a form of inter-organizational relationship, on firms’ capabilities to create and capture value and improve performance. The second essay empirically examines the interplay between social capital, as a byproduct of intra-organizational relationships, and causal entrepreneurial process on innovativeness in new ventures.

Show moreFor decades now, musicians have been using crossover to expand their career and earn more knowledge about the music industry. Soprano Sarah Brightman and duo 2 Cellos are classically trained musicians who implemented crossover into their career and used their classical training as guidance of become successful. Musicians who restrict themselves only to classical music may approach danger regarding a career and livelihood, which includes audience interest, employability and financial instability. In this study the term “crossover” refers to classical artists’ who use their skills to perform other genres. Crossover gives artists the chance to appeal to larger audiences and extend their repertoire of music while using techniques used in classical works. Classical musicians such as Sarah Brightman and 2 Cellos are being forced to cross musical genres because of employability, declining audience interest in classical music and financial instability. Within this research I am going to compare and analyze the crossover of one classical vocalist, Sarah Brightman, and a classical instrumentalist group named 2 Cellos. My research will focus on the following three questions: Research Question #1 What are the critical factors for successful crossover for classical musicians to pop? Research Question #2 What crossover processes did Sarah Brightman and 2 Cello’s employ to transition from classical to pop music? Research Question #3 Was Sarah Brightman’s and 2 Cellos crossover to pop music successful according to the definition and parameters of success? This paper ends with a conclusion highlighting my findings, which summarizes the major points of this research and provide ideas for further research on the concept of crossover.

Show moreThe present research investigates entitlement in the workplace through three related papers—a review and two empirical studies. In the first paper, I conduct a review of entitlement and offer an agenda for future research. I examine entitlement’s various historical roots, definitions and conceptualizations, measures, theoretical frameworks, antecedents, consequences, and role as a moderator. I also outline avenues for future entitlement research and advocate for research that considers the effects of perceived coworker entitlement from a state perspective. Following the research agenda of paper one, I empirically delve into the negative effects of perceived coworker entitlement in the second two papers. Specifically, in the second paper I explore how the individual can mitigate the negative effects associated with perceived coworker entitlement and in the third paper I explore how the organization can mitigate the negative effects associated with perceived coworker entitlement. In the second paper, I utilize equity theory and referent cognitions theory to examine the relationships between perceived coworker entitlement and individual outcomes including in-role behavior, organizational citizenship behavior, pay satisfaction, and counterproductive work behavior via psychological distress. I further explore the moderating role of individual difference variables including core-self evaluations, positive and negative affect, and equity sensitivity in the relationship between perceived coworker entitlement and psychological distress. Using a sample of 200 working adults, I found that core self-evaluations and equity sensitivity significantly moderate the relationship between perceived coworker entitlement and psychological distress. However, I did not find any significant mediation or moderated mediation relationships. In the third paper, I utilize fairness theory as a theoretical framework to study the relationships among perceived coworker entitlement, job satisfaction, organizational citizenship behavior, and emotional exhaustion. I further explore the moderating role of Colquitt’s (2001) four dimensions of organizational justice: distributive justice, procedural justice, interpersonal justice, and informational justice. Using the same sample of 200 working adults, I found that perceived coworker entitlement is negatively related to organizational citizenship behavior; distributive justice moderates the relationship between perceived coworker entitlement and emotional exhaustion; interpersonal justice moderates the relationship between perceived coworker entitlement and job satisfaction and emotional exhaustion; and informational justice moderates the relationship between perceived coworker entitlement and emotional exhaustion. Contributions to research, practical implications, strengths and limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

First, Chapter 1 provides an overview the purpose, research questions, the significance of the study, and the conceptual framework. Next, a comprehensive review of the existing literature on opportunity identification is provided which is followed by the development of theoretical arguments, associated hypotheses, and the conceptual model. Subsequently, and overview of the research methodology and sampling procedure is presented. Finally, the analyses and results presented followed by a discussion, future research, and conclusions.

Show moreThe purpose of this dissertation is to explore the contingencies that alter the link between entrepreneurial orientation (“EO”; a strategic posture characterized by behaviors and attitudes that display innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking) and firm outcomes. While conceptual claims unite on the belief that firms largely benefit from emphasizing innovation through proactive and risky initiatives, the empirical findings on a positive link between EO and performance are inconclusive. As such, several scholars have explored the contingencies that illuminate the boundary conditions to EO, however, most of this research has focused on external contingencies, i.e. those connected to the environment, while internal contingencies, i.e. those connected to the firm, have been fairly disregarded. Not only will the industry and market play a significant role in a firm’s ability to effectively carry out their desired strategic initiatives, so too will firm characteristics, such as communication and culture, as these internal factors are directly related to the level of value created from strategic actions. Therefore, this dissertation is an attempt to further clarify the boundary conditions of EO by focusing on these firm specific attributes. Chapter two, titled “Family communication patterns and entrepreneurial orientation in family firms” exposes the impact of specific family communication patterns on the performance outcomes from an entrepreneurial orientation. This chapter contributes to the corporate entrepreneurship literature, by confining the positive effects of EO to certain firm specific characteristic, as well as to the family business literature by further demonstrating the heterogeneity between family firms. Thereafter, chapter three, titled “Entrepreneurial orientation, organizational culture, and firm performance: The importance of a balanced approach”, argues and tests the importance of organizational culture, as defined by the competing values framework, as a contingency variable of the EO-performance relationship. This empirical chapter exploits a configurational approach, using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (“fs/QCA”) to analyze the arrangements of different entrepreneurial orientation and organizational cultures that yield superior performance. Through this exploration, I advance research on the EO-performance relationship by integrating the firm’s corporate culture as a means of alleviating concerns with resistance by certain stakeholders to the ambiguity associated with entrepreneurial ventures.

Show moreMergers and acquisitions (M&As) of private target firms is a common phenomenon and being acquired is the desired outcome for some private firms, as it is the path to wealth creation for these firm’s owners and investors. However, this M&A type has received limited attention in the literature, especially from the perspective of the target firm. Furthermore, neither a theoretical model to explain the phenomenon where the goal of the target firm is to be acquired in M&A, nor an indicator to gauge wealth creation for such firms were identified in the review of the literature. This paper established that, because being acquired in a M&A may be the goal, the wealth generated from the M&A is the outcome or performance indicator for such firms. The outcomes of M&As depend, among other factors, on the acquiring firm’s perception of the target firm’s value. Thus, this paper coined the term ‘private firm’s attractiveness as an acquisition target’, and built on the resource based view of the firm and signaling theory to identify factors that influence a private firm’s attractiveness to acquirers. Furthermore, private firm’s attractiveness as an acquisition target was used as the bridge between the acquiring firm perspective and target firm perspective in a M&A. The resource-based view of the firm and the signaling theory were used jointly in building the theoretical framework for hypotheses development. Hypotheses were tested using a sample of 222 acquisitions of US private target firms by US public acquiring firms. Hierarchical regression with inverse mills ratio, as well as two-step Heckman model were used to address the potential selection hazard. Results provided strong support for most hypotheses, and showed that investor involvement, target firm’s industry innovativeness, and target firm’s emphasis on growth in human capital were positively related to the private firm’s attractiveness as an acquisition target. Furthermore, the effects of emphasis on growth in human capital were stronger when the target firm’s growth in revenue was lower and when the target firm operated in a more innovative industry. The effects of emphasis on growth in revenue were stronger when the target firm operated in a less innovative industry.

Show moreMy work investigates the effects of founding conditions for organizational founders on the eventual satisfaction founders have with the financial and social outcomes of their organization. First, I introduce two new constructs, social salience and economic salience, which represent the intended social or economic goals of the founder for their organization when they found the new organization. I then utilize organizational imprinting theory to argue that the social and economic salience, along with founders’ previous work experience, influence the structure of the new organization via the legal form. I then argue that the legal form influences the specific capabilities that the organization will acquire or create early in the organization’s life. Finally, I argue that the capabilities established at founding will influence the eventual satisfaction founders currently have with their organizations’ social and financial outcomes as the capabilities endure over time. Based on a sample of 150 organizational founders that are still actively managing their organizations, my results support the idea that founding conditions for individual founders influence the capabilities that their organizations create or acquire. Further, founders’ current level of satisfaction with the financial and social performance of their organizations is significantly related to these capabilities. These results largely support the process based model of imprinting effects on organizational outcomes, and suggest that founders play a critical role in setting the original imprint of an organization that will endure via organizational inertia, perhaps long after the imprint’s originally designed purpose.

These drastic changes have occurred under an outdated legal framework. This paper will recommend a comprehensive reform to our copyright law to uphold the intentions of copyright in the modern, digital age of today. By looking at the history of copyright and its evolution, one can assess how Congress has been tasked with establishing a fair market value for music by promoting the public interest and fairly compensating copyright owners. This will lead to an evaluation and comparison of those methods used to determine fair market value for creative works that will be the basis of the recommendation used to modernize copyright law. This recommendation will comprehensively provide for equitable treatment for all parties in the streaming age through its totality, additional reforms, and alternative ideas.

I show how these organizations, though contesting institutions which are highly reified, tacitly endorsed, and historically inertial, leverage emotional experiences and regulation to incrementally move this mountain. Using a grounded qualitative study of interview data from animal rights advocates and archival data generated by animal rights organizations, this study finds that animal rights organizations have encoded both response- and antecedent-focused emotion regulation into two distinct strategies used to garner support for their institutional change project: transgression mining and seed planting. Furthermore, this study expounds upon the role of moral emotional experiences in the individual-level process by which persons alternate into support for animal rights organizations and their goals, here labeled autodidactic frame alignment. Drawing on Goffman’s backstage/frontstage distinction, this study illustrates how emotion’s role in institutional change efforts varies across both level of analysis and areas of interactive life. In doing so, this research adds empirical weight to and extends recent theoretical work expounding upon the emotionally-charged nature of the lived experience of institutions.

Standard practices in the industry have been turned upside down, leaving record label executives, managers, and other personnel behind the scenes working to develop new and innovative ways to cope with this change. Music publicists are not immune to these changes and have seen a tremendous shift in their roles and responsibilities. With the advent of the digital age, the role of music publicity is getting stronger and is arguably one of the most vital components of a successful music career. The demand and necessity for a well-executed music publicity campaign is growing as modern technology reduces the need for a record deal. However, external forces resulting from technological changes are making the job of a music publicist difficult. Despite its importance, little has been said about the field of music publicity in scholastic literature, and the few in-depth texts and articles on the subject are grossly outdated rendering them irrelevant. The majority of recent comment on music publicists and their duties have come from journalists and music publicists themselves. Further, the average person knows little about the practice of music publicity and what a publicist does. Independent publicists are often highly criticized and looked down upon merely because artists, managers, media personnel, and even record labels may not fully grasp what a publicist does. This poses a slew of issues, including the publicist not feeling completely part of the artist’s team, despite being one of the most essential components of the artist’s successful career. The author of this thesis is an independent senior publicity manager for a boutique music publicity firm. The purpose of this thesis is to define music publicity, bring to light essential issues in music publicity, and provide a thorough understanding of the role and responsibilities of a music publicist. Through analysis of the available literature and qualitative interviews with industry professionals, this paper will address what music publicity is, how the digital age has changed music publicity, and finally will provide suggestions for best-practices when working with indie artists and mid-level campaigns.

Most of the published writings on this subject are either too broad, or too business-minded for the typical musician. This thesis provides a creative approach with the organization of the information. I present the process of band management in five chapters named after the five movements of traditional sonata form: The Introduction (Chapter 1) presents the various themes that are covered throughout the study, and describes the reasoning for using sonata form for organization and also elaborates on the author’s background. The Exposition (Chapter 2) describes the beginning stages of creating a band and establishing a creative project in the local music scene. This includes the initial formation of the band and its members, the process of networking within the local music scene, and an in depth explanation of how to effectively utilize all the “Essential Websites.” The Development (Chapter 3) describes the process of developing a band into a consistently gigging1 project. The main topics covered are booking shows, performing shows, recording and releasing an album, and what to focus on after it is released. The Recapitulation (Chapter 4) condenses the main topics of the thesis into a more palatable checklist of essential steps that musicians can easily reference throughout the process of managing their project. The Coda (Chapter 5) looks towards the future of the music industry, and serves as a prediction of how the previously effective methods apply to new technologies and website.

Show moreThis dissertation presents an analytical framework based on the processes of social identification and self-categorization as mechanisms through which team-focused leadership and group affective tone separately and jointly contribute to team outcomes at both the team and team member levels A review of relevant literature supported the development of the research hypotheses The hypotheses were tested using multilevel structural equation modeling and single level path analysis to tease out significant effects of team leadership and affective processes in teams The results of single level path analyses demonstrated that leaders and team members contribute to the affective tone of a team through the sharing of emotions and processes of emotional contagion and norms of emotional expression via identification and self-categorization processes Both individual leaders (vertical team-focused leadership) and team members sharing in leadership processes (shared team-focused leadership) were found to distinctly contribute to group affective tone and the important team outcomes of team performance, creativity, trust, team member engagement, team member identification, and team member citizenship behaviors The results further demonstrated that the affective tone of a team (group affective tone) has direct effects on team member outcomes, and mediates direct effects on outcomes of team-focused leadership Group affective tone was found to mediate the effects of both vertical and shared team-focused leadership on team member engagement, identification, citizenship behaviors, and team trust The results are relevant to both researchers interested in studying leadership and affective processes in teams and to management practitioners interested in understanding contributions to team effectiveness The consideration of both team-focused leadership and the affective tone of a team matter in team effectiveness The emotional climate of a team appears to be important to team member outcomes more so than team-level outcomes Therefore, what managers consider to be important indicators of team effectiveness (either team-level or team member-level) determine the actions of a manager to monitor and strengthen the positive affective tone of a team Limitations are discussed and future research directions are provided to extend the observations of this study

Specifically, through two essays, I consider the effects of acquirer trust on two outcome variables: the acquisition premium and target executive retention. In Essay One, I integrate the social embeddedness theory and agency theory and find that acquirer trust leads to higher premiums. In Essay Two, I integrate the social embeddedness perspective with justice theory and find that the positive relationship between acquirer trust and target executive retention is mediated by justice. Boundary conditions are also considered in each essay. These two essay provide contributions to the nascent literature on M&A negotiations and the complex role of trust in M&A negotiations.

These portfolios have been found to have a significant impact on firms’ financial performance. At the same time, there is little consensus regarding the direction of this effect. Findings have shown positive, negative, curvilinear, and non-significant relationships. In this dissertation, I employed an organizational learning perspective to investigate the effect of alliance portfolio size on firm financial performance. Using a sample of 343 firm-year observations in the U.S. software industry, I explored portfolio- and firm-level characteristics as moderators of this relationship. Findings provide evidence for a curvilinear, inverted U-shaped relationship between portfolio size and firm performance that is moderated by the timing of the alliances within the portfolio and by the firms’ Top Management Team (TMT) turnover.

The focus on identity literature has been disproportionately focused on follower identity rather than leader identity (Epitropaki et al., 2017; Johnson et al., 2012). This shortage is unfortunate due to leader identity’s capabilities in developing leaders and effective leader behaviors (Miscenko et al., 2017; Johnson et al., 2012). Due to this deficiency, I focus my dissertation on leader identity and attempt to better grasp the development of one’s leader identity. In line with recent conceptual literature, I examine the four dimensions of leader identity and patterns of development to better understand the development of leader identity. Through the two papers in this dissertation, I aim to enhance our current understanding of leader identity.

Show moreResearchers and policy makers consider entrepreneurship to be a major source of economic development and competitiveness. Determinants of entrepreneurship have been studied at individual, regional and national levels. Even though research indicates that variation in the levels of entrepreneurship across regions within nations is greater than the national differences and that these differences persist over time (Bosma & Schutjen 2009, 2011; Fritsch & Mueller 2006; Sternberg 2004; Tamásy 2006), we still do not know the full range of regional level determinants of entrepreneurship. I drew from Wennekers’ (2006) framework and link two lines of research (international entrepreneurship and international management) to examine the effects of institutional, economic, technological and cultural contexts on entrepreneurship across within-country regions developed ten hypotheses regarding the relationship of institutional, economic, technological and cultural context to entrepreneurship. I tested these hypotheses within Europe using the regional classification scheme developed by the European Union. Data for the variables came from the European Values Survey, European Social Survey, Eurostat, World Bank, International Social Security Association, Eurobarometer and the Global Competitiveness Report. To test the hypothesized relationships, I use Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM 6.0.) The results indicate that there is a positive relationship between institutional trust, Long Term Orientation and entrepreneurship levels across regions. In conclusion, examination of region-level predictors of entrepreneurship must include different measures of entrepreneurship to provide more accurate understanding and to inform policy makers.

The second part incorporated the respondents' value rankings of Rokeach-Clare-Sanford terminal and instrumental values and their perceived value rankings of relevant other people in their job environments. The third part involved certain demographic information about the respondents and that relationship to conflict areas. Chi-square and the Spearman Coefficient were used in analyzing the results.
