Show moreThe purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of eccentric phase duration on concentric outcomes at 60% and 80% of one-repetition maximum (1RM) in the squat and bench press. Sixteen resistance-trained males completed four laboratory visits as follows: Day 1- 1RM testing; Day 2- establishment of normative eccentric durations; Days 3 and 4- randomized fast (0.75 times) or slow (2 times) eccentric duration variations, which were controlled by visual and auditory metronomes. Eccentric duration was significantly and inversely correlated with average concentric velocity (ACV) at 60% (r = 0.408) and 80% (r = -0.477) of 1RM squat and at 100% of 1RM bench press. At 60% of 1RM squat, both fast and slow eccentric conditions produced greater (p<0.001) peak concentric velocity (PCV) than normative duration with fast also producing greater PCV than slow (p=0.044). Therefore, fast eccentric durations may benefit concentric velocity.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to determine if barbell circuit training (RTC) as a model for concurrent training is superior to high intensity interval (CTHI) or moderate intensity continuous (CTMI) cycling for changes in muscular strength, hypertrophy, and body composition. Eleven trained males were recruited and counterbalanced into three groups. Each program featured three alternating days of resistance training per week, with one of the above time-equated (30-minute) concurrent training modalities between sessions. All groups increased muscular strength (p<0.05, RTC=7.48%, CTHI=10.32%, CTMI=15.74%) with no group differences (p>0.05). Increases in upper body muscle hypertrophy were similar in RTC and CTMI (p<0.01, RTC=20.18%, CTMI=20.97%), increases in lower body muscle hypertrophy only occurred in CTMI (VM: p=0.01, 38.59%, VLP: p=0.07, 13.33%), while no hypertrophy changes were detected in CTHI (p>0.05), no group experienced changes in body composition (p>0.05). These findings suggest similar muscle performance benefits from barbell circuit or cycling concurrent training.

Thus, the purpose was to compare high and low repetition daily undulating periodization (DUP) models, with equal volume on performance. Eleven trained, college-aged males were counterbalanced into high (DUPHR) or low (DUP-LR) repetition groups. Subjects performed the squat and bench press 3X/wk. for 8wks. Outcome measures included one-repetition maximum (1RM) bench press, squat, and total strength (TS=squat+bench press), and muscle thickness (MT). 1RM strength increased with no difference between groups. Both groups increased total chest and total body MT (p<0.05); but only DUP-HR increased thigh MT (p<0.05). Effect sizes showed meaningful differences in strength favoring DUP-LR for bench press-1.48 and TS-0.89. Our findings indicate with equal volume, there may be meaningful differences in strength that are repetition-dependent, and varying responses to MT across different muscle groups.

Fifty-eight resistance-trained males and females were recruited, and reported to the laboratory on one day. Subjects completed eight different scales and questionnaires before completing one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing of the squat, followed by two single-repetition sets at 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% of 1RM, and a set to volitional fatigue at 70% of 1RM. Cognitive anxiety and hypersomnia were found to be positive and negative predictors (p<0.05), respectively, of 1RM performance. Further, self-confidence, grit, and perceived recovery status were significant negative predictors of RPE (p<0.05). Finally, PRS was discovered to be a positive predictor of subject-reported 1RM self-efficacy (b=0.39, t=3.14, p<0.01, R2=0.15).

Show morePURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare relationships between dietary and physical activity (PA) behaviors and body composition and body fat distribution, as measured by percent body fat (BF%), waist-to-height ratio (WHt), waistto- hip ratio (WHp) and body mass index (BMI) in post-menopausal women (Post), with the same relationships in pre-menopausal women (Pre). METHODS: Ninety-two subjects (n = 48 Post; n = 44 Pre) were measured for height, weight, waist and hip circumferences and skinfold thicknesses. Dietary content was obtained from a Diet History Questionnaire (DHQ II); PA was estimated from responses to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). RESULTS: Multiple regression identified no modifiable predictor variables for Pre. Models for Post identified saturated fat grams (SFGs), PA, years postmenopause (YrsPost), and Alcohol (Alc) as predictors of WHt, WHp, BMI and BF%. CONCLUSIONS: PA, SFG and Alc are modifiable variables related to postmenopausal body composition and fat distribution.

Subjects performed 1RM testing of the back squat followed by two single repetition sets at 30-90% of 1RM and a 70% of 1RM set to fatigue. There was no significant correlation between femur length and height with ACV at any intensity (p>0.05). A significant negative correlation existed between both height (r=-0.39, p=0.003) and femur length (r=-0.31, p=0.018) with total number of repetitions performed.

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a vital metabolic and inflammatory regulator, however circulating FGF21 concentrations are elevated in obese individuals. Acute aerobic exercise increases systemic FGF21 in normal-weight individuals, however the effect of acute aerobic exercise on plasma FGF21 response and the relationships with inflammation (IL-6 and TNF-α), insulin resistance, and energy expenditure in obese individuals is unknown. Following 30 minutes of treadmill running at 75% VO2max, plasma FGF21 response, as indicated by area-under-the-curve “with respect to increase” (AUCi) analyses, was attenuated in 12 obese compared to 12 normalweight subjects. Additionally, FGF21 AUCi positively correlated with glucose AUCi, total relative energy expenditure, and relative VO2max, suggesting that cardiorespiratory fitness levels may predict FGF21 response, contributing to the enhanced regulation of glucose and energy metabolism.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors (AACCA) certification in reducing injuries associated with cheerleading. Participants were selected from a list of AACCA certified coaches in the state of Florida and through state, county, and district cheerleading coach directories in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. A total of approximately 575 questionnaires asking about number and types of injuries in 2003 -2004, certifications held and other relevant information were distributed. One hundred and two questionnaires were returned for a response rate of 16.5%. Contrary to our hypothesis, AACCA certification was not associated with fewer reported injuries. In contrast, holding other cheerleading certifications was negatively correlated with total injuries suggesting that other certifications, but not AACCA certification, are more effective in reducing injuries.

Show moreThis study examined the effect of repetitions per set as a function of changing load (percentage of one-repetition maximum) on the accuracy of intraset repetitions in reserve (RIR) predictions in the back squat and bench press. Twelve resistance trained men completed three multi-set back squat and bench press training sessions that differed in the number of target repetitions (session 1: 10 repetitions; session 2: 8 repetitions; session 3: 6 repetitions). The last set of each session was performed until muscular failure in which subjects verbally indicated when they perceived 4 RIR and 1 RIR. For each RIR prediction, RIRDIFF [perceived RIR - actual RIR] was calculated. Differences in RIRDIFF were analyzed using both raw RIRDIFF (including positive and negative values) and absolute RIRDIFF (absolute values) via MANOVA and factorial ANOVA. The model controlled for the covariates session-type, percentage of 1RM, and total repetitions per set. Overall, RIR accuracy at the predicted 1 RIR was significantly greater (i.e., lower absolute RIRDIFF) than at the predicted 4 RIR in both the bench press (4 RIR: 1.00 ± 0.18 vs. 1 RIR: 0.69 ± 0.12; p = 0.028) and the squat (4 RIR: 1.43 ± 0.31 vs. 1 RIR: 0.79 ± 0.26; p = 0.007). No covariates significantly affected RIR accuracy (p = 0.085 – 0.518) at the predicted 1 RIR. However, at the predicted 4 RIR, the covariate repetitions per set affected raw RIRDIFF in both the squat (p = 0.007) and bench press (p < 0.001), indicating that subjects tended to overpredict RIR in lower repetition sets and underpredict RIR in higher repetition sets.

During the set to failure, subjects verbally indicated when they perceived 4 repetitions in reserve (RIR) and 1 RIR during the set. For each RIR prediction, the difference between perceived RIR and actual RIR was calculated as RIRDIFF. We analyzed differences in RIRDIFF using both the raw RIRDIFF (including positive and negative values) and the absolute values of all RIRDIFF using a factorial MANOVA. Covariates included proximity to failure of the RIR prediction, total repetitions performed per set, percentage of one-repetition maximum lifted, the week of training, and the session (1, 2, or 3 within each seek). For the raw RIRDIFF all covariates, except for percentage of 1RM (p > 0.05) were significantly related to the outcome measure at both the predicted 4 and 1 RIR (p < 0.001 to p = 0.04). Specifically, RIRDIFF was significantly higher in weeks 1-4 versus weeks 5-6 (p < 0.001 to p = 0.005). However, the only covariate which significantly impacted the absolute value RIRDIFF at both the predicted 4 (p = 0.033) and 1 RIR (p = 0.022) was total repetitions per set. These results indicate that trained men tend to shift from overpredicting to underpredicting RIR over time and that more repetitions in a set is related to more inaccurate RIR predictions. However, the actual accuracy (i.e., absolute value RIRDIFF) did not significantly change over six weeks of training.

The purpose of this study was to determine if differences in isokinetic knee extension/flexion LR exist between body positions. Ten subjects (4 males and 6 females, age 29.3 ± 5.4 yrs, ht 1.71 ± 0.10 m, wt 71.9 ± 12.9 kg) volunteered to participate in the seated vs. prone investigation and nine different subjects (4 males and 5 females, age 29.5 ± 6.9 yrs, ht 1.72 ± 0.09 m, wt 69.0 ± 13.8 kg) volunteered to participate in the seated vs. supine study. Each subject completed 3 maximal reciprocal concentric/concentric repetitions of dominant knee extension/flexion on a Biodex System 2 isokinetic dynamometer at 60, 120, 180, 240 and 360 deg·sec-1 in the supine or prone and seated positions. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed that only seated flexion at 360 deg·sec-1 (57.6 ± 1.7 degrees) elicited significantly (p < 0.05) greater LR than prone (49.2 ± 2.8 degrees). No significant differences in LR extension or flexion existed at any velocity between the supine vs. seated positions. ANOVA also demonstrated differences between seated vs. prone torque, work and power at most velocities while there was no difference between seated vs. supine. LR is the only phase of an isokinetic repetition where quantifiable resistance is maintained and this data appears to support that it may not be position-dependent but position may alter traditional performance variables.

These include inflammatory peptides, such as TNF-𝛼, CRP, and IL-6. Consequently, obesity is now characterized as a state of chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, a condition considerably linked to the development of comorbidity. Given the critical role of adipose tissue in the inflammatory process, especially in obese individuals, it becomes an important clinical objective to identify lifestyle factors that may affect the obesity-immune system relationship. For instance, stress, physical activity, and nutrition have each shown to be a significant lifestyle factor influencing the inflammatory profile associated with the state of obesity.Therefore, the purpose of this review is to comprehensively evaluate the impact of lifestyle factors, in particular psychological stress, physical activity, and nutrition, on obesity-related immune function with specific focus on inflammation.
