American teachers work tirelessly to provide quality instruction in a safe learning environment that nurtures the educational and emotional needs of their students (Jennings & Greenberg, 2009). Many teachers report that the emotional toll of teaching has impacted their professional and personal lives in a negative way (Werner Juarez et al., 2020) As a result, teachers are vulnerable to the development of occupational hazards such as stress, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress (STS) which may diminish their professional quality of life (Richards, 2012). The literature indicates that the deterioration of professional quality of life is strongly correlated to more systemic problems in education, such as elevated attrition rates and the retention of highly qualified teachers (Schutz & Zembylas, 2009). The research suggests that indicators for these professional deficits may begin to present during the preparation phase of teaching (Miller & Flint-Stipp, 2019). However, most universities provide inadequate training for the protection and improvement of teacher well-being across the span of their careers (Schonert-Reichl, 2017). In addition, there has been little research invested in the development of compassion satisfaction, a protective factor in cultivating teacher resilience (Pérez-Chacón et al., 2021). The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between social and emotional competence (SEC) and professional quality of life factors in pre-service teachers. A nonexperimental, correlational design was used to examined whether emotion regulation and relationship management skills is predictive of an educators’ perceived levels of burnout, STS, and compassion satisfaction (N = 51).

Show moreChronic illness increases each year in the United States with about 117 million people living with a chronic condition (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). There are more than 100 autoimmune conditions (AARDA, 2019). This particular study focuses on a very specific population, which is women with systemic lupus erythematosus; in which women compose 50.9% of the population (United States Census Bureau, 2010). The specific variables being evaluated are marital satisfaction with a special focus on partner intimacy (sexual relations) and the relationship that exists between these variables in women who have the condition. The study aims at forming a marriage between the medical field and the counseling field to have better understanding and ultimately provide a more comprehensive treatment from the findings of this research. Prior studies suggest that marital satisfaction and partner intimacy are affected when a person has a chronic condition, albeit very little research has been done in the last decade that focuses on this particular population with these specific variables. Seventy six (N=76) women with systemic lupus erythematosus participated in this study. There were 76 females. The diverse participants had an age mean of 44.16 and a standard deviation of 10.59. There were African American (n=7), Asian (n=3), Caucasian (n=55), American/Alaskan Native (n=1), Native Hawaiian (n=1), Pacific Islander (n=3), NA’s (n=6). Education levels were high school (n=17), bachelor’s (n=33), master’s (n=15), doctorate (n=4), other (n=6) and NA’s (n=1). There were employed (n=64) and not employed (n=12). From the Midwest (n=8), Northeast (n=11), Northwest (n=6), Southeast (n=37), Southwest (n=14), NA’s (n=4). The participants were diagnosed varying years from 1992 until 2021, with NA’s (n=7). Flare up mean was 2.7, with a standard deviation of 2.3. The household income mean was $87,784.10 with a standard deviation of 49063.08. The relationship between marital satisfaction, partner intimacy and resiliency in women with lupus was measured by using bivariate regression analysis. The implications of the findings, study limitations and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Show moreResearch has consistently shown that LGBTGEQIAP+ individuals experience pervasive health disparities, including eating disorders (ED; e.g., Mensinger et al., 2020). Unfortunately, LGBTGEQIAP+ people report negative ED treatment experiences, particularly concerning cultural sensitivity, gender-affirming care, and other barriers to diagnosis and treatment (Duffy et al., 2016; Hartman-Munick et al., 2021; The Trevor Project, 2020). Sonneville and Lipson (2018) advocated for developing inclusive screening tools to address current deficits in multicultural ED research and practice. The present study sought to fill this gap by developing and validating a new screening tool for LGBTGEQIAP+ individuals: the Multidimensional Eating and Body Image Screening (MEBIS). Following Lambie et al.’s (2017) guidelines, the researcher developed an initial item pool based on a comprehensive ED literature review. An expert panel of reviewers and a small sample of LGBTGEQIAP+ individuals provided additional feedback to enhance item clarity, content validity, and affirming language. The researcher began the recruitment process after receiving approval from the university’s Institutional Review Board. Participants included LGBTGEQIAP+ adults (18 years of age or older) from the community. Two separate samples were collected via an online survey for exploratory factor analysis (EFA; N=400) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA; N=339) procedures. The EFA revealed a nine-factor structure accounting for 61.1% of the variance in the model. The factors were labeled as follows: (1) Gender, Media, and Disconnection; (2) Binging and Emotional Eating; (3) Compassion and Awareness; (4) Communities of Support; (5) Relationship with Food; (6) Affectional Orientation Sociocultural Factors; (7) Restriction, Dieting, and Compensatory Behaviors; (8) Racial/Ethnic Sociocultural Factors; and (9) Family and Cultural Support. According to CFA results, the nine-factor model suggested adequate fit (robust x2 (df = 866)=2479.62; CFI=.903; RMSEA=0.74; SRMR=.084). Additional psychometric analyses revealed acceptable internal consistency reliability (Cronbach’s alpha of 0.888) and evidence of convergent validity with the well-established ED screening, the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26; Garner et al., 1982). These results pose significant implications for culturally responsive and inclusive ED treatment, which are addressed.

Show moreThe present study evaluated affective, relational, and emotional behaviors associated with symptom reduction and clinical outcomes in psychotherapy. It relied on 36 therapist-client dyads and assessed client symptoms using the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS-34) as the progress monitoring and outcome assessment tool used by university counseling centers before every psychotherapy session. The research examined the first administration scores and the last administration scores of the CCCAPS to determine the level of clinical improvement. The researcher used the revised Specific Affect Coding System (SPAFF) to code the therapist and client interactions throughout the entire first psychotherapy session. The results revealed significant effects between the affective exchanges in the therapeutic relationship of both the therapist and the client on clinical outcomes. The researcher employed multivariate statistics with appropriate univariate follow-up procedures to determine group differences between SPAFF codes on the symptom outcome groups and CCAPS subscales. The researcher also used path analysis following Actor Partner Independence Model assumptions (Kenny et al., 2020) to examine the interdependent emotional dynamics between therapist and client on client symptom outcomes, and these revealed significant effects between SPAFF scores observed in the first session on client outcomes at the termination of therapy. The results add to the current research literature, highlighting patterns of significant affective behaviors in the first psychotherapy session on client outcomes. The study reveals that the first session cannot be minimized, as it has a greater impact on client outcomes than previously believed. The conclusion also outlines the study’s implications for clinical practice, graduate training, and research.

Show moreSexual violence (SV) is a significant problem that impacts women on college campuses at an alarming rate (Fischer et al., 2018). The body of research published regarding women’s experiences with SV on college campuses disproportionately focuses on Caucasian women (Oney, 2018). Few studies address the specific concerns of minority women and their experiences with SV and even fewer studies serve to identify contributing factors to their recovery. In addition to the prevalence of SV on college campuses, the rates of rape myth acceptance (RMA) that have been studied among this age group focus primarily on White cisgender men and women, and again, are understudied in women who identify as racial/ethnic minorities (Oney, 2018). Research correlates high levels of RMA with a decreased willingness to accept recovery-promoting assistance post-SV, which reduces a survivor’s willingness to access to services such as counseling (Oney, 2018). The objective of this study was to determine if rape myth acceptance predicts recovery self-efficacy and if experiences of SV serve as a mediating variable between recovery-self efficacy and RMA in ethnic and racial minority college-age women. The results of this study indicate that RMA does not predict or mediate the variables of recovery self-efficacy and SV. A linear regression analysis was used to establish if RMA predicts recovery self-efficacy, the factors within the scales were not correlated and additional tests yielded non-statistically significant results; (b = -0.02, t = -0.29, p = .77). The study also was unable to provide evidence of experiences of SV being a mediating variable between RMA and recovery self-efficacy through a mediation analysis (b =.00, SE = .002, 95% CI = [-.004, .004], p =.89).

Show moreLGBTQ+ individuals currently represent 7.1% of the population yet seek mental health services at rates two to four times higher than average, and present with significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety, stress, substance abuse, and suicidality. LGBTQ+ youth have the highest rates of suicidality of any minority group, with a recent poll reporting 22-32% attempted suicide compared to 5% of non-LGBTQ+ youth. These statistics are influenced by discrimination, stigma, and living in a heterosexist society and can lead to psychological distress, identity concealment, internalized homophobia, and stigma-based rejection explained through Minority Stress Theory. LGBTQ+ polls recently revealed an average of 80% identify as religious and/or spiritual. The purpose of this study is to better understand the risks or rewards of the intersecting identities of religiosity, spirituality and being LGBTQ+. In this quantitative non-experimental design study using Pearson’s R correlation, multiple relationships were found among the variables of spirituality, religiosity, age, being non-white, minority stress, and symptoms. of depression, anxiety, and stress. Multiple regression analysis found that spirituality, religiosity, and minority stress predicted 52% of the variance in depression, anxiety, and stress. Finally, a mediation analysis revealed that religiosity was not statistically significant as a mediator between minority stress and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, but spirituality was statistically significant as a partial mediator of these effects and, therefore, strong emphasis is placed on the benefits spirituality can have among LGBTQ+ individuals.

Despite the pervasiveness of this diagnosis, research fails to evaluate counselors’ efficacy beliefs regarding the clinical treatment of the OUD client population. Similarly, despite the support that exists for affiliation with 12-step recovery groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous improving recovery outcomes for those diagnosed with OUD (Costello et al., 2019; Humphreys et al., 2020; Kelly et al., 2020), studies assessing counselors’ knowledge of 12-step recovery are scarce in the counseling literature. The present study targeted these two under-represented constructs by examining the relationship between counselors’ knowledge of 12-step recovery and their opioid use disorder counseling self-efficacy (OUDCSE). Counselors’ addiction beliefs and personal substance use experience (PSUE) were chosen as variables in this study, as both have a clinically significant influence on the counseling process and efficacy beliefs (Bawden, 2020; Cronin et al., 2014; Nielson, 2016). The researcher obtained approval from the university’s Institutional Review Board and used convenience and snowball sampling to recruit 161 licensed mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and certified clinical rehabilitation counselors for participation.

Coded data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests which found significant differences between clients who dropout and the types of questions being asked in session (HSS). There were also significant differences between clients who dropout and the therapist and client SPAFF scores, SPAFF and HSS scores on the WAI and RRI, as well as the quality of questions being asked (HSS) over time (from initial session to fourth session). Coded data for differences between clients who dropout and the therapist and client assessment of the quality of the working alliance and real relationship were assessed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests and found no significant differences. Analysis of the results support the presence of therapist factors on the therapeutic relationship and client premature termination. These findings can also be added to the literature regarding the outcomes of the therapeutic relationship on client premature termination. The implications for psychotherapy practice, education, and research are discussed.

The school setting plays an integral part in the development of student’s social and emotional competencies. Approaches to school counseling, such as Advocating Student-within-Environment (ASE), are pivotal in efforts to help students expand their social/emotional skills. This study examined the phenomenological experience of sixth grade students who participated in an ASE-influenced counseling program. One objective for this study was to advance the current literature regarding school counseling’s efficacy in promoting greater connectedness among students and their school environment. The study was conducted using the Student Success Skills (SSS) small group intervention, led by a school counselor already trained in the program. The research questions under investigation were: What is the phenomenological experience of middle school students’ participation in an ASE-aligned evidence-based guidance curriculum? Does the phenomenological experience of middle school students’ participation in an ASE-aligned evidence-based guidance curriculum translate to connectedness among the students in the intervention? Does the phenomenological experience of middle school students’ participation in an ASE-aligned evidence-based guidance curriculum lead to coregulatory relationships among students and school faculty?

Show moreThis study aimed to understand the relationship between School Counseling Site Supervisors’ (SCSS) characteristics, Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) training, cultural humility, advocacy competency, and SDOH competency (n = 69). SDOH refers to the factors that inform an individual’s physical and mental health. Cultural humility refers to an innate openness and curiosity about individual experiences, perspectives, and culture. Advocacy competency refers to the ability to implement advocacy efforts within an individual’s community. Having competency with addressing SDOH in schools, practicing cultural humility, and advocacy competency can help SCSS improve supervision practice within school communities. This study followed a non-experimental, correlational survey research design. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to measure the strength of the relationships between the variables. The data supported statistically significant relationships between SDOH-based supervision training (F(12,51) = 2.59, p < .05, R2 = .38), cultural humility (F(1,67) = 6.17, p < .015, R2 = .08), and advocacy competency (F(1,67) = 9.7, p < .003, R2 = .13) as predictors of SDOH competency.

In recent years, school counselors and education have faced an increase in mental health challenges, which has had adverse effects on school counseling (Marraccini et al., 2023). Seventy-six percent of state counseling coordinators report insufficient school counselors available to fill positions (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2023b). Show moreIn recent years, school counselors and education have faced an increase in mental health challenges, which has had adverse effects on school counseling (Marraccini et al., 2023). Seventy-six percent of state counseling coordinators report insufficient school counselors available to fill positions (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2023b). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2023) estimates that 26,600 jobs per year will become available for school counselors, career counselors, and advisors over the next 10 years due to attrition and retirement from the profession. This nonexperimental, correlational design explored the relationships between the volunteer school counselors’ (N= 56) developmental stage and perceived leadership behaviors, wellness, burnout, and turnover intention. The linear regression results revealed that school counselors’ years of experience predicted their leadership related to systemic collaboration and turnover intention. When exploring leadership behaviors, linear regressions found that counselors’ interpersonal skills predicted their perceptions of wellness and burnout, and systemic collaboration and resourceful problem-solving skills predicted a counselor’s level of burnout regarding their feelings of incompetence. Also, the participants’ professional efficacy predicted wellness and incompetence. Finally, social justice had a statistically significant relationship with incompetence and devaluing clients. The results of this study show moderate to strong relationships amongst select variables. The results, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.

Show moreThe aim of the study was to validate the researcher's new therapeutic intervention, Sign your Feelings, through a four-week randomized control trial (RCT). This intervention involves hearing therapists working with hearing clients. It incorporates (a) discussions about the therapeutic alliance, (b) therapists teaching their clients 36 signs in American Sign Language (ASL) and (c) frequent emotional disclosure as clients learn and practice the signs. This RCT measured the therapeutic alliance and client outcomes, using the Sessions Rating Scale (SRS) and CORE-10 instrument. Eighty adults from 10 U.S. States participated in the study. Sixteen therapists underwent training before administering the intervention, and sessions took place virtually and in-person. Results did not render statistically significant differences for SRS total scores between the two groups (p =.194). CORE-10 total scores between the two groups were not statistically significant either (p = 0.736). However, results did show a statistically significant negative correlation of r = -.229 (p = .041) between SRS and CORE-10 post-test scores.
