Regulatory agencies need simple test for ARI to monitor environmental quality. This study is first to measure resistance in a consortium of bacteria, not pure cultures. Our rapid method – “In-the-zone” (ITZ) employs a) the size of zones of inhibition b) identity of bacteria in the zone c) number of resistant clones within zones of inhibition and d) type of antibiotic to compute ARI. Results can be obtained within 24 - 48 hrs with very little effort. This semester, we repeated the test and validated the weighting of various parameters. The ITZ assay yield consistent and reproducible data on zones of inhibition of bacteria community. The diameter of inhibition zones was the most important parameter distinguishing resistomes of varying ARI. Landfill, manured garden, and waste plant samples scored highest in antibiotic resistance index compared to beach sand.

Chemotaxonomy has been applied successfully to phytoplankton communities, but its efficacy for periphyton has not yet been established. This study examined the ability of simultaneous linear equations (SLE), CHEMTAX, and the Bayesian Compositional Estimator (BCE) to determine algal class composition in Florida Everglades periphyton. The methods were applied to artificial datasets, mixed lab cultures of known composition, and Everglades periphyton samples for which microscopic biovolume data was available. All methods were able to return accurate sample compositions for artificial data and mixed lab cultures. Correlation between pigment methods and microscopic results for natural periphyton samples was poor. SLE and CHEMTAX returned similar results for all samples while BCE performed less well.

Contraception, and the Comstock Laws suppressing contraceptive information, were widely discussed among Greenwich Village radicals with whom Margaret Sanger lived and worked from 1911 to 1914. However, Sanger's attention was not focused upon contraception until 1914, when she was indicted under the Comstock Laws for birth control articles that appeared in her paper, The Woman Rebel. Misinterpreting the nature of the charges against her, Sanger fled to England to gain birth control knowledge. There she met Dr. Alice Vickery, president of the British Neo- Malthusian League. Both Vickery arrl the organization she headed served as role models for Sanger. Through Vickery, Sanger learned of the Malthusian League's history, and met contemporary birth control advocates such as Stella Browne and Dr. Marie Stopes. Their influence transformed Sanger's radicalism, narrowed her focus, and prepared her to assume her role as leader of the developing United States birth control movement.

Show moreRobert Browning's dramatic monologues often characterize the darker aspect of romantic love through speakers who demonstrate their devotion to violence. Exploring the innovations in discourse, Browning gives his narrators voices that allow them to speak from an ancient literary tradition. For Browning's speakers, words make the silencing of the lover either the act of ultimate devotion or the result of disappointed expectations. The narrator speaks of the absence of God, as when Porphyria's lover holds her body to him: "and yet God has not said a word!" With the poet's strong speech---in all his attractiveness, his destructive display of love and his dismissal of God---Browning has helped to create a discourse that has sculpted the literary force of the romantic killer. Three novelists in particular employ the literary force of Browning's experiments: Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat, Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho and Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lecter novels. Intertextual comparisons among these narratives delineate how Robert Browning's innovation of the seductive antihero has persisted in literature.

Show more“Southern Fringes: Little Magazines and Larry Brown’s Early Short Fiction” seeks to revitalize and expand the scholarly field of the New Southern Studies, employing textuality, book history, and postcritique perspectives towards the study of literary events and objects. Whereas the New Southern Studies rightly problematizes and dismantles notions of the signifier southern named in connection with literary works, such approaches often ignore paratextual elements, including material and sociological features, that work to frame and support these narratives. This dissertation addresses such shortcomings, arguing that paratextual formations function as vital spaces for constructing senses of southernness in service of both bibliographic identity and readers’ literary discernments. Exploring public epitext in a variety of locations, as well as four cases of Larry Brown’s short stories appearing in Mississippi Review, The Greensboro Review, and The Chattahoochee Review, this dissertation demonstrates how Brown’s writing emerges as southern fringe: a joint presence of autobiographic, material, perceptual, and other paratextual elements that frame Brown’s writing in unique locales outside of the literary mainstream. This dissertation's implications include adopting a mode of reading and analysis, focusing on case studies and surface readings of paratext serving specific bibliographic documents, as a way to move beyond generalizing and broad claims about the nature, function, and interpretation of literature. Additionally, this dissertation focuses on little magazines, materiality, and paratext as expanded sites and perspectives for the continued growth and development of interdisciplinary humanities fields such as the New Southern Studies.
