Show moreThis thesis describes a macroscopic analysis of the chert artifacts from several households at Mayapan, Yucatan, Mexico, in order to determine whether or not there was behavioral variation among the households. The chert artifacts were excavated during the 1992 field season during Dr. Clifford T. Brown's dissertation research and this thesis expands upon his findings. The presence of behavioral variation would provide evidence of a social organization at Mayapan and support Brown's findings that the prehistoric Yucatec Maya government was a segmentary state. Two analyses were performed on the chert artifacts: a general chert analysis and an informal tool analysis. The general chert analysis was performed on 3,777 artifacts from nine households, while the informal tool analysis was performed on 1,151 artifacts from four households. The informal tool analysis was conducted on artifacts that were observed to have use wear during the general chert analysis.

Show moreBrown Noddy nestlings in the Dry Tortugas exhibit a growth rate that is slower than would be predicted, based on adult body size and mode of development. This pattern of prolonged growth is typical of tropical pelagic seabirds. An intraspecific comparison of growth rates among several populations of Brown Noddies indicates that growth of body mass of the Tortugas Noddies is significantly faster, the development period shorter, and the asymptotic size smaller than in Pacific populations. However, there were no differences among the populations in the rates of wing or culmen growth. The Bush Key nestlings appear to receive a higher quality diet that contains proportionally more fish, while the Pacific nestlings receive substantial amounts of squid. The Pacific nestlings also seem to be subjected to a thermally more stressful microclimate, which may necessitate the allocation of proportionally more of their total energy to thermoregulation and less to growth.

Show moreThis qualitative research study explores the relationship between reducing uncertainty and assigning source credibility in the context of social media sites (SMS) and examines the effect of uncertainty reduction within the social media environment on the development of relationships between journalists and their sources. For this study, interviews were conducted with professional journalists to determine whether uncertainty was reduced and credibility was established with sources via SMS (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) and what theoretical strategies journalists used to reduce their uncertainty. The study also aims to determine if correlations exist between a reporter's age, beat, and/or personal adoption of SMS and the reporter's usage of SMS for source development. The interviews were conducted with 15 journalists of The Palm Beach Post (West Palm Beach, Florida), using a standardized interview protocol. Subjects were asked to voluntarily participate in a face-to-face interview with the researcher. Reporters were selected based upon their gender and cultural ethnicity, which was representative of the newsroom demographics of The Palm Beach Post at that time. This research aims to contribute to the uncertainty reduction theory in the realm of computer-mediated communications, specifically with regard to the use of SMS in forming and maintaining journalist-source relationships.

Show moreThis thesis develops methodologies for continuous estimation of hydrological variables which infill missing daily rainfall data and the forecast of weekly streamflows from a watershed. Several mathematical programming formulations were developed and used to estimate missing historical rainfall data. Functional relationships were created between radar precipitation and known rain gauge data then are used to estimate the missing data. Streamflow predictions models require highly non-linear mathematical models to capture the complex physical characteristics of a watershed. An artificial neural network model was developed for streamflow prediction. There are no set methods of creating a neural network and the selection of architecture and inputs to a neural network affects the performance. This thesis addresses this issue with automated input and network architecture selection through optimization. MATLABª scripts are developed and used to test many combinations and select a model through optimization.

Show moreThe post-mortem interval (PMI) is the time elapsed from the time of death until the discovery of a decomposing body, which forensic scientists utilize to decipher how and when a death occurred. Much of decomposition is attributable to bacterial activity. Identifying a net change in bacterial composition throughout the PMI of a decomposing carcass helps to explain the mechanism of decomposition. Carcasses of four feral swine were placed in cages in direct sunlight, whereby soil samples were taken prior to and following seven days of decomposition. Bacterial DNA was then isolated from the soil samples and amplified via polymerase-chain reaction. Further metagenomic analysis was conducted by an outside agency using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) amplicon sequencing to determine the composition of the bacterial community. A relationship between the stages of decomposition and the anatomy of bacterial communities involved was determined, which helps to elucidate the process of decomposition.

Show moreAnimal protein production systems are reaching production capacity limits due to their associated ecological detriments. Therefore, a global shift towards an ecologically sustainable alternative is vital, and hence exploring the scope of market for such alternatives.“ Cultured meat”, or ex vivo cultivated meat, may indeed serve as a viable alternative. However, although this method aims to lessen environmental woes, one current drawback is the ambiguity of consumer acceptance. This study addresses this concern through calculus of potential markets. Indeed, through surveying about 5,000 people worldwide, with focused populations in the United States and University undergraduates, statistically significant results of positive consumer interest in cultured meat were attained. After survey completion, over 75% of participants expressed interest in eating cultured meat (interested in “probably” or “definitely” eating cultured meat). Ultimately, this novel study ought to serve as a foundational framework for catalyzing funding towards privatized and academic research on cultured meat.

Show moreArchaeologists have identified many prehistoric structures affiliated with the Manteño culture 500 CE to 1532 CE of coastal Ecuador, but the function of those constructions is rarely understood. The majority of the buildings have not yet yielded clear evidence of their function. As part of an ongoing project by Florida Atlantic University to explore the function of these buildings, I conducted systematic soil phosphate testing in and around two archaeological structures and, for ethnoarchaeological comparison, four contemporary households. The two prehistoric structures are located 200 meters from each other and on two different river terraces within the same river valley. They are part of a larger site C4-084. I found clear spatial patterning in phosphate concentrations in and around the archaeological structures. The concentrations were higher inside the structures, while outside they decreased with distance from the structure. Statistical testing and spatial analysis have proved the two structures were used for different purposes
