This drama of news is chiefly one involving individuals, causing journalists often to create instant celebrities, who must cope with the various phases of his or her public status. The involuntary celebrity presents journalists with ethical challenges embedded within the deep structures of their organizational and professional newswork. This thesis considers the case of Carol Lynn Kendall, who became famous in 1985 after her involvement in a car bombing for which her brother was convicted. This work focuses on news columns and interviews with journalists and with Kendall and on theory about newswork and the creation of fame. From this, the thesis draws an ideal type of the involuntary celebrity and shows how it is constructed and destroyed as well as how we might use it to understand the media's relationship with such individuals.

Show moreThis study was a descriptive analysis of a population of teachers and administrators in the Broward School District to determine how they perceived the teacher evaluation process as prescribed by the negotiated contract between the Broward Classroom Teachers Association and the School Board of Broward County for the school years of 1979 through 1982. A random sample of teachers produced responses from 310 subjects, while the random sample of principals produced responses from eighty subjects. For purposes of this study, subjects were grouped as either (1) Teacher, Elementary; (2) Teacher, Secondary; (3) Principal, Elementary; or (4) Principal, Secondary. The two independent variables in the study consisted of subject by Position and Level. Each independent variable had subjects in two levels; Principals and Teachers in the instance of Position, Elementary and Secondary in the instance of Level. When the data were analyzed, the major hypothesis tested revealed that principals more than teachers regard the evaluation process as an occasion for meaningful dialogue; advance notice of the time for formal evaluation was of little concern to either group; and, both groups perceived evaluations as a means for improving instruction. From the secondary findings, one significant fact was that both teachers and administrators felt that negotiating the evaluation procedures was of little importance; administrators did not feel frustrated nor hindered by some of the procedures. The author expected teachers to be more supportive of the procedures than administrators, however, both groups were essentially neutral.

Show moreRats that developed tolerance to the anorexic effect of morphine under conditions supportive of associational tolerance were tested for Pavlovian conditioned tolerance. Initially sensitive and nonsensitive rats received chronic morphine injections of 10 and 20mg/kg respectively in the presence of an explicitly paired compound cue until tolerant to the morphine induced suppression of milk intake. In a test for compensatory responding, only nonsensitive rats increased their intake in response to a placebo injection of saline in the presence of the morphine cue. In tests of associative tolerance, morphine injections in the presence of an explicitly unpaired saline cue, or in the absence of either cue, did not produce a loss of tolerance. After the temporal pattern of morphine administration was extinguished, only nonsensitive rats showed both a loss of tolerance in the presence of the saline cue, and tolerance retention in the presence of the morphine cue.

In this creative dissertation, consisting of a series of essays and a full-length play, I demonstrate an alternative view of aging women to combat the pejorative images now current. Drawing on dramatic portrayals from the past 100 years and current information on aging in the United States, I explore the dominant viewpoint on aging women. Combining the structures of spiritual quest and rite of passage with an appreciation for the ritual that celebrates such events, I have written a play, The Crones Among Us, from a female viewpoint. Presenting female characters as subjects rather than objects, the play provides an alternative view of women on the other side of fifty. Using the archetype of the crone, the play affords a more empowering view of women as they age in a society which has privileged youth and beauty.

Show moreThe objective of this study has been to examine the discovery approach to learning and its adaptability to music education. Professional literature relating to the discovery approach was reviewed and summarized. Conclusions and implications for music education were drawn from these summaries. An examination of the philosophical implications of educational trends and the nature of learning was also made. This examination was made to gather perspective on the need for evaluating and exploring educational approaches and methods that affect learning. It was concluded that no one method or approach can be accepted as the all encompassing answer in music education. However, the discovery approach does hold great promise as another way of teaching music to the child in a creative manner. Through the discovery approach the child can be given the opportunity to experience personal success and expertise in the art of music. He can enjoy exploring and discovering the elements of music as learning evolves from his personal perspective and point of view.

Show moreBenson spaces of higher order are introduced extending the idea of N. Krugljak and M. Milman, A distance between orbits that controls commutator estimates and invertibilty of operators, Advances in Mathematics 182 (2004), 78-123. The concept of Benson shift operators is introduced and a class of spaces equipped with these operators is considered. Commutator theorems of higher order on orbit spaces generated by a single element are proved for this class. It is shown that these results apply to the complex method of interpolation and to the real method of interpolation for the case q=1. Two new characterizations are presented of the domain space of the "derivation" operator in the context of orbital methods. Comparisons to the work of others are made, especially the unifying paper of M. Cwikel, N. Kalton, M. Milman and R. Rochberg, A United Theory of Commutator Estimates for a Class of Interpolation Methods, Advances in Mathematics 169 2002, 241-312.

Method: 207 participants (Mage = 71.79, SD = 7.48, 123 Hispanic Americans [HA]) were followed for an average of 23 months. Participants were classified into 3 diagnostic groups (Cognitively normal [CN], mild cognitive impairment [MCI], or dementia) based on the CDR global score and the neuropsychological baseline data was used as predictors of progression status. For the CN group, the Benson Figure delayed recall was a predictor of cognitive decline, and within the MCI group, the Benson delayed recall, the HVLT immediate recall, the TMTB, category fluency, and three measures of the LASSI-L (A1 cued recall, A2 cued recall, and delayed recall) were significant predictors of progression to dementia and are suggested as cognitive markers of progression for MCI individuals. Memory cognitive markers and category fluency correlated with medial temporal lobe volumes, and the TMT-B correlated with superior frontal volume. We did not observe significant differences in cognitive markers across ethnic groups. Conclusion: we identified cognitive markers of progression for CN and for MCI diagnoses which were not different across ethnic groups. These findings contribute to literature on the early identification of individuals at risk of progression to a more severe cognitive status even within asymptomatic individuals which can facilitate a more time- and cost-effective practice that is essential to the provision of the appropriate treatment to those at higher risk of progression.

What Matthew Arnold referred to as the Philistines of England--the newly-risen bourgeois--struggle to imitate the upper classes and to emulate their use of leisure time. Benson's characterizations of the villagers of Riseholme and Tilling match closely the descriptions of those Philistines; however, we cannot dislike them for their weaknesses. The positive change in the author's attitude toward them compels us to cheer them on as the victors of the twentieth century.
