Show moreA zero knowledge identification protocol is an interactive proof system that allows a person to prove that he knows a secret key associated with his identity without revealing the secret key. This type of protocol is the topic of a fairy tale, by Gustavus Simmons called the King's Dilemma, about a king and the problem he has with thieves impersonating his tax collectors. It describes a zero-knowledge identification protocol that will rid the king of his problem. I present this system, the motivation for this thesis, and the transformations from this protocol, that uses lead weights and containers, to protocols that use mathematical elements. The security of these protocols is determined by the complexity of the underlying mathematical problem, such as the knapsack and discrete logarithm problem, and three properties: completeness, soundness, and zero knowledge.

Walt Whitman's visual imagination was influenced by paintings, panoramas, and photography. His expansive vision reflects changes in methods of perception. Whitman was also an influence on early filmmakers, like Dziga Vertov. Vertov's "Kino-Eye" theory and Whitman's poetry reflect each other in their attempts to attain a "fresh" perception, to see the world "photogenically." Show moreWalt Whitman's visual imagination was influenced by paintings, panoramas, and photography. His expansive vision reflects changes in methods of perception. Whitman was also an influence on early filmmakers, like Dziga Vertov. Vertov's "Kino-Eye" theory and Whitman's poetry reflect each other in their attempts to attain a "fresh" perception, to see the world "photogenically." Consequently, there is more than just similitude between Whitman and cinema. In fact, both are meant to be seen. Although the idea of reading Whitman "cinematographically" has been mentioned by some critics, none has suggested how this reading process is to be enacted or understood by the reader. The Reader Response theory of Wolfgang Iser is used to show that the reader, when encountering a text, is involved in a process of ideation, during which mental images are influenced by and derived in part from textual schemata and indeterminacies. The cinematographic reading is, then, highly imaginative, resulting in the creation of a "virtual" text. When examined, it can be shown how Walt Whitman's catalogues intend to carry the reader along in a process of "indirect" ideation during which the structures and images of the catalogues become realized by the reader's imagination.

I examined nest placement on a southeast Florida beach (Juno and Jupiter) with average beach widths of 30 (natural) and 90 m (nourished beach) and tested slope as a proximal cue for nesting using long-term data sets and GPS technology. All three species had similar species-specific crawl lengths and nest sites relative to distance from water, regardless of beach width. Loggerheads and leatherbacks crawled and nested significantly shorter median distances (8--14 m) relative to the water compared to greens (15 m), corresponding to sites of maximum productivity measured as percent hatchling success. The observed consistencies of crawl distance across all beach profiles suggest a strong evolutionary selection for a non-random crawl length at this study site, regardless of beach width and slight shifts in slope.

Purnell's model (1998) of Cultural Competence was utilized as organizing framework for description of the sample, analysis and discussion. Several themes emerged during thematic analysis of the participants' responses. Participants identified influenza as a "big cold" which can initially be prevented with traditional home remedies and practices as well as with prayers. Lack of knowledge of the vaccine, uncertainty of the effectiveness of the vaccine, reliance on the recommendations of their children, doctors, and as well as the researcher, and lack of access were all factors reported as affecting their acceptance of the vaccine.

It is designed to provide one or multiple medical institutions on a global scale a common platform for patient care and consultation. The proposed application consists of two key models, Body Surface Area model and Search model, which are described in detail and their results are discussed. We have implemented the proposed IDR for oncology application using ColdFusion MX. Existing research in this area have been studied and compared. Framework of the proposed IDR, structure, front-end user interface and back-end database schema of the proposed oncology application are explained in this thesis.

Silos, a logic simulation environment was used in the design and verification of the proposed architecture and the standard full adder that were modeled with Verilog hardware description language. Lasi was used for the layout design of the proposed architecture and the standard full adder. After the layout, both the architectures were compiled separately using LASICKT and a corresponding .CIR file was generated. The .CIR file was imported and executed into WINSPICE3 for the simulation of the circuit.

Show moreThe detection of the abnormal blood cells and particles in a blood test is essential in medical diagnosis. The detection rules, which are usually implemented in the widely used automated hematology analyzer, are therefore critical for the health and even lives of millions of people. The research endeavor of this thesis is on generating such detection rules using a supervised machine learning algorithm. The first part of this thesis studies the hematology data and surveys the popular classification algorithms. In the second part, the selected algorithm, CART, is implemented with deliberately selected parameters. In the third part, a modification of the algorithm, logical pruning with Enclose the Normal principle, is exercised. To extend the algorithm and to achieve better performance, I developed and implemented the idea of decision tree combinations. The research has proven to be successful by the achievement of good performance and reasonable detection rules.

The convergence of voice and data in one simplified network brings both benefits and constraints to users. Among the several issues that need to be addressed when deploying this technology, security is one of the most critical. This thesis will present a combination of security patterns based on the systematic analysis of attacks against a VoIP network and the existing techniques to mitigate these attacks, providing good practices for all IP telephony systems. The VoIP Security Patterns which are based on object-oriented modeling, will help network designers to improve the level of security not only in voice but also in data, video, and fax over IP networks.

Show moreA thesis investigates the measured and theoretical pressure reflection coefficients of the seabed at normal incidence. The theoretical reflection coefficient is calculated using a physics-based model developed by Maurice Biot. The model describes sound propagation in saturated porous media and interrelationships between the acoustic properties of the media and the physical properties of the pore fluid and the porous solid. Stoll modified the Biot model for the case of ocean sediments and developed an expression for calculating the reflection coefficient as a function of frequency. This thesis tests the model by comparing the reflection coefficient measured with chirp sonar to the reflection coefficient calculated using the Biot model. An experiment was conducted off Fort Walton Beach, Florida where chirp sonar transmitted FM pulses at normal incidence to a sandy seabed. Sediment properties measured during SAX-99 are used to calculate the theoretical reflection coefficient using the Biot-Stoll model. The agreement of the measured reflection coefficients with the theoretical calculations over the band of 1500 to 16000 Hz varies as much as 70%. The plotted results show a reduction of the reflection coefficient with frequency but the large deviations from the trend prevent any further conclusions.

Sex ratio, or the number of men per 100 women in a society, may affect many aspects of society such as crime rates. It was predicted that in countries with higher sex ratios, crime rates would be higher than in countries with lower sex ratios. It was also predicted that in countries with higher sex ratios, homicide and rape rates would be higher than in countries with lower sex ratios. Additionally, it was predicted that in countries with lower sex ratios, the incidence of female offending would be higher than in countries with higher sex ratios. Adult sex ratios and crime statistics were collected for 154 countries and for each of eight years. The prediction that crime rates would be higher in countries with higher sex ratios was partially supported by the data, as was the prediction that rape rates would be higher in countries with higher sex ratios. The prediction that homicide rates would be higher in countries with higher sex ratios was contradicted by the data, and mixed results were found for the prediction that the incidence of female offending would be higher in countries with lower sex ratios. Limitations are discussed, as are possible directions for future research.

The expression profiles of 22,215 genes between human lens epithelial and fiber cells were analyzed using oligonucleotide microarray hybridization and RT-PCR. Selected genes were functionally clustered using the EASE bioinformatics software package. Results. Analysis of microarray hybridizations revealed 1430 transcripts that were significantly increased and 901 transcripts that were significantly decreased. Microarray data was confirmed using RT-PCR on 11 randomly selected genes. Functional clustering of the identified gene expression patterns revealed altered gene expression in cellular pathways including oxidative stress, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. The methionine sulfoxide reductase class of enzymes were further analyzed and demonstrated to be expressed throughout the human body, indicating a significant protective role. Conclusions. These data reveal novel and previously identified gene expression differences that provide insight into those mechanisms that may be important for lens cell differentiation.

Early development of the blood ark, Anadara ovalis (Bruguiere, 1789), and the ponderous ark, Noetia ponderosa (Say, 1822) was analyzed with an emphasis on the processes of meiotic maturation and early embryogenesis through gastrulation, using light and fluorescence microscopy. Both A. ovalis and N. ponderosa oocytes were released at the metaphase I stage of meiosis and shared similar schedules of early development through initial veliger stage. Differences in the timing of development between species were negligible. In addition, the behavior and developmental timeline of the ark clams was very similar to that of Mercenaria mercenaria , which also reaches the D-shaped veliger stage in less than 24 hours.

The four emerging themes as to why individuals smoke were for the creation of self-image, pleasure and relaxation, reinforce social relations and mood maintenance. The two themes regarding the rationalization behind the behavior were "it's better than other vices" argument and the "life is dangerous" argument. Individuals know that smoking is a health risk; however, the way in which individuals rationalize the behavior allows them to continue the behavior.

Significant differences in morphology exist between these species; the most extreme morphologies exhibited are in Homo and Hylobates. While the OH 8 articular surface is essentially indistinguishable from Homo sapiens, AL 333-54 and STX 5017 show a mosaic of human-like and ape-like traits, which indicates the retention of the ability to abduct and rotate the hallux. The cast of AL 333-54 shows many similarities to Gorilla, while demonstrating many changes in line with Homo . The cast of STX 5017 retains a surface morphology much like Gorilla and Pan, with fewer similarities to Homo compared to AL 333-54.

Hatchlings from nests along the Atlantic coastline were raised to 120 g, sexed laparoscopically and verified histologically. Sex ratios differed at the beach, subseason, and subpopulation levels. There was no difference in overall sex ratios between the two study years. Average nest temperature and incubation durations were not accurate sex ratio correlates. Temperatures that produced female biased or male biased sex ratios overlapped in ranges with those producing a single sex. I found that the Transitional Range of Temperatures for loggerhead sea turtles is approximately 26.5°C--32°C, and the best correlation between average temperature and sex ratio occurred at 50--65% of incubation. Further studies are needed to define the roles of other environmental factors or the responses of tissues in loggerhead sex determination.

Show moreThis inquiry considers the nature of the treaty ratification debates in France, England, and the United States from the June 28, 1919 signing of the Versailles Treaty until its final repudiation by the U.S. Senate in March 1920. It has two main linked objectives: to examine the agendas of Clemenceau, Lloyd George, and Wilson and the strategies each employed in their attempts to convince their constituents to accept the treaty package, and to argue that the peace these executives negotiated was by no means a foregone conclusion at the treaty signing since legislative approval was required in each case. In each country, objections to the Treaty were closely linked to the personalities and actions of each negotiator. Opposition to the treaty developed long before the delegates ever assembled at Paris. Prompted in part by a curious gap in historical scholarship in the time frame between the ceremony at Versailles and the decade of the 1920's, this thesis endeavors to prove that matters disputed after the conclusion of deliberations with Germany were actually a continuation of, rather than a reaction to, the politics conducted during the war itself.

Alicia Yanez Cossio, an established novelist and short story writer from Ecuador, reflects on the most serious social problems in her country. Show moreAlicia Yanez Cossio, an established novelist and short story writer from Ecuador, reflects on the most serious social problems in her country. She is especially concerned with the Ecuadorian people's identity. In her works she describes how the Church and State, which promote and maintain a patriarchal social structure, have perpetuated the devaluation of women that began with the conquest. This study analyzes how women confront and define their gender as well as their race in two novels: Bruna, soroche y los tios (1972) and La cofradia del mullo del vestido de la Virgen Pipona (2002). As she traces Ecuadorian history, Yanez Cossio draws paralellisms between the loss of identity and gender, and focuses on the repercussions this has had in the lives of Ecuadorian women. Through the characters she offers possible solutions. This thesis analyzes the writer's perspective of the identity problem in this South American country and the fight of its people, most specifically women, to recover their identity by recognizing their indigenous roots and their gender, in a social environment that denies either are significant or relevant.

Show moreThe novels of Nathanael West are preoccupied with the deconstruction of Western civilization, satirizing and parodying its most respected ideologies and literatures; they are also involved in recreating both cultural and personal identity from the deconstructed fragments of this culture by performances or masks of identity. The textual mask is a trope that performs both these functions in the work of Eliot, Pound, and Joyce, but especially in West. West demonstrated the mask's destructive force and constructive potential in both his writing and his personal life. The novels---The Dream Life of Balso Snell, Miss Lonelyhearts, A Cool Million, and The Day of the Locust---variously attack artistic or political formulae that privilege escape from culture's degradation, or that offer erroneous promises of subjective or cultural wholeness. West's life and art, then, exhibit the usefulness of the mask in the grim battle for the formation of artistic and political subjectivity.
