Educational level affects various neuropsychological measures including performance on verbal fluency tasks. Using a sample of 140 normal elder Americans (ages 57 to 88; 38M/ 102F) divided into two education groups (7-11 and> 12 years of education), results showed strong association with performance for education on the categories fruits and clothing and for ethnicity on the total items generated and number of switches for vegetables. Differences between Spanish and English speakers were found for the fruits category. Results suggest that the animal category is the best one to be used to reduce potential effects of education in individuals with more than 7 years of education.

Show moreScene understanding attempts to produce a textual description of visible and latent concepts in an image to describe the real meaning of the scene. Concepts are either objects, events or relations depicted in an image. To recognize concepts, the decision of object detection algorithm must be further enhanced from visual similarity to semantical compatibility. Semantically relevant concepts convey the most consistent meaning of the scene. Object detectors analyze visual properties (e.g., pixel intensities, texture, color gradient) of sub-regions of an image to identify objects. The initially assigned objects names must be further examined to ensure they are compatible with each other and the scene. By enforcing inter-object dependencies (e.g., co-occurrence, spatial and semantical priors) and object to scene constraints as background information, a concept classifier predicts the most semantically consistent set of names for discovered objects. The additional background information that describes concepts is called context. In this dissertation, a framework for building context-based concept detection is presented that uses a combination of multiple contextual relationships to refine the result of underlying feature-based object detectors to produce most semantically compatible concepts. In addition to the lack of ability to capture semantical dependencies, object detectors suffer from high dimensionality of feature space that impairs them. Variances in the image (i.e., quality, pose, articulation, illumination, and occlusion) can also result in low-quality visual features that impact the accuracy of detected concepts. The object detectors used to build context-based framework experiments in this study are based on the state-of-the-art generative and discriminative graphical models. The relationships between model variables can be easily described using graphical models and the dependencies and precisely characterized using these representations. The generative context-based implementations are extensions of Latent Dirichlet Allocation, a leading topic modeling approach that is very effective in reduction of the dimensionality of the data. The discriminative contextbased approach extends Conditional Random Fields which allows efficient and precise construction of model by specifying and including only cases that are related and influence it. The dataset used for training and evaluation is MIT SUN397. The result of the experiments shows overall 15% increase in accuracy in annotation and 31% improvement in semantical saliency of the annotated concepts.

First, a survey of various wavelets and their features is presented, including continuous, discrete, and orthogonal wavelets. Theories and concepts underlying one and two-dimensional wavelet transforms are introduced and compared to Fourier transform and sub-band coding. The core of the thesis is the implementation of two-dimensional and three-dimensional codec architectures and their application to coding images and videos, respectively. We studied performance of the wavelet codec by comparing it to DCT and JPEG coding techniques. We applied these techniques for compression of a variety of test images and videos. We also analyzed the adaptability and scalability of 2D and 3D codec. Experimental results, presented in the thesis, illustrate the superior performance of wavelets compared to other coding techniques.

The goal of this project was to investigate the possible correlation between exposure to specific chemical and an increase of mitotic defects. These defects manifest themselves as lagging chromosomes, multipolar spindles, and anaphase bridges. Using the uterine cancer cell line MES-SA as a model, we established a baseline for the mitotic defects in the absence and presence of various chemicals using γ-tubulin and DAPI-immune stained fixed cells. The cells were treated with varying concentrations of Vinyl Chloride, β-estradiol, Fluvestrant, and were examined using Immunofluorescent microscopy. We found that an exposure to Vinyl Chloride, β-estradiol and Fulvestrant have increased the number of mitotic defects in this cell line.

Show moreThis work proposes to demonstrate how John Milton’s epic English poem Paradise Lost, a product of the contentious religious climate leading up to and surrounding its production, operates as a Christian catechism, or manual of belief. Spurred by the Protestant Reformation, the production of catechisms by Catholics and Protestants burgeoned during the century leading up to the composition of Paradise Lost. Catechisms structured as dialogues containing questions and answers were especially popular during that time, and the several dialogues that exist within Paradise Lost serve as dialogue catechisms, which closely mirror the content and language of contemporaneous Reformed catechisms. Within the poem, implied readers are represented by characters, who elicit and provide lessons for real readers of the text. In this way, Paradise Lost catechizes its audience through dramatic dialogues, which introduce popular topics of theological inquiry and present answers the poem would have the reader accept, bringing the reader to a “proper” understanding of Christian faith through active and responsive reading.

The novel contains many hallmarks of a feminist utopia, such as a concern for the environment and a distrust of men and technology; yet all are undercut by the traditional structures that she retains of class, military machismo, sexuality, and motherhood. An attempt to read The Gate to Women's Country as "a fortifying tonic" (Simmons 22) leads one instead into the "politics of despair" ("Reconsiderations" 44), as one realizes that Tepper is exaggerating, not resolving, the problematic relations that continue to exist between genders. Too perceptive to be overly optimistic about "surmounting humanity's most dangerous flaws" (Miller 15), Tepper's dystopian novel ultimately acknowledges that the genetic solutions of "Women's Country" are nearly futile. She leaves the struggling utopian and dystopian forces of the novel unresolved and men and women in perpetual conflict.

Show moreThis thesis presents estimations of two simple models of the Balance of Payments of Mexico, using econometric methods and techniques. The models are designed to explain features of the major aggregates of Mexico's foreign accounts. Two alternative approaches often applied to estimating the Balance of Payments are utilized, namely, the post-Keynesian approach, and the Monetary approach. The post-Keynesian model proved to be a good theoretical framework for explaining major accounts of the balance of payments. The Monetary model explained the overall movements of international reserves very well. Though using very different theoretical constructs, both approaches suggest that monetary policy is ineffective, both in terms of the authorities' ability to control the domestic monetary aggregates, and in terms of policy influence on capital flows, the latter reflected in the capital account of the balance of payments. For the authorities to maintain a fixed exchange rate, the growth in money supply must tend to be equal to the growth in money demand.

Show moreThis project addresses the simulation, control and optimization of underwater vehicle performance. An analytical model of underwater vehicle motion has been developed. This model is based on a set of six degree of freedom nonlinear differential equations of motion. These equations incorporate inertial, hydrodynamic, hydrostatic, gravity and thruster forces to define the vehicle's motion. The forces are calculated and the equations of motion solved using a finite difference method of integration. An automatic closed loop control strategy has been developed and integrated into the motion model. The controller determines control plane deflection and thruster output based on sensor provided input, maneuver request and control gain constants. The motion model simulates the effects of these controller requests on the vehicle motion. The controller effects are analyzed and an optimal set of control gains is determined. These optimal gains are determined based on a quantitative comparison of a pre-defined Performance Index (PI) function. The PI is a function of critical performance values, i.e., energy consumption, and user defined weighted constants. By employing an iteration technique the PI is minimized to provide an optimal set of control gains.

Show moreThere has been a substantial amount of research supporting the use of functional behavioral assessment (FBA) for students with severe to profound disabilities. Many of the studies with these populations have shown to greatly impact the behavior of students when FBA-generated interventions, which match the function of the targeted behavior, are used to improve behavior. This research was the basis for the 1997 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which specifically requires the use of the FBA to generate educative, positively-based interventions. Since IDEA '97, research has shown the effective use of the FBA to create interventions matching the function of the problem behavior for students with milder disabilities. This is promising as research has been lacking in what assessment data teachers use to select behavioral interventions. Furthermore, school personnel have been ineffective in dealing with the problem behavior of students with disabilities as evidenced by high suspension rates for students with disabilities. There is also very limited research in the area of what assessment data is used in the development of individualized education programs (IEP) for students with emotional disabilities. The psychological evaluation is used to determine eligibility for special education, yet there is no research indicating that the information contained within a psychological evaluation is used for either goal development or intervention selection. This is problematic in that IEPs developed for students with emotional disabilities are lacking in quality and effectiveness. This study examined the effect that types of assessment report played on teachers' selection of interventions and IEP goal development for a student with an emotional disability. After reviewing an FBA or psychological evaluation, participants were to develop a behavioral goal. These goals were rated for the presence or absence of five quality indicators that should be present in a well-developed goal. No significant differences were found in the frequencies of these goal indicators. Participants were then asked to indicate preference of use of three interventions to increase appropriate behavior and three interventions to decrease inappropriate behavior and then to rank order their potential use of the interventions. No significant differences were found in the indication of use on either measure. Participants did consistently indicate preferred use of the three positively-based interventions.

In addition, the American government feared that Egypt's nationalism might generate a pan-Arab nationalism that would disrupt the Western relationship with the Middle East. Frustrated with the lack of a positive American response and recognizing Egypt's vulnerability as a result of a February raid with Israel, Nasser sought and obtained armaments from the Soviet-bloc in September 1955. This permitted the Soviet Union, in effect, to hurdle America's containment policy. Thus, the Arab-Israeli arms race began.

Show moreOpioids are considered the most efficacious drugs for management of moderate to severe pain, yet their use clinically is often restricted due to the onset of adverse side-effects. Drugs in this class produce most of their physiological effects (analgesia, nausea, vomiting) through activation of the μ-opioid receptor; however, an increasing number of studies have demonstrated that opioids can activate distinct downstream responses, a phenomenon termed functional selectivity. This project attempts to determine the amino acid residues involved in the activation of the μ-opioid receptor and the role they play in the binding of ligands to the receptor. The highly conserved DRY motif (aspartic acid-arginine-tyrosine) found commonly in GPCRs was mutated via site directed mutagenesis, aspartic acid-164 to alanine (A), glutamic acid (E), and arginine (R) and G-protein coupling and competition binding assays were performed to test whether ligand affinity and activity differed in the mutant receptors compared to the wild-type.
