The ebb tidal flow is modeled as a turbulent, plane jet which includes lateral mixing and entrainment, bottom friction, and offshore bathymetric changes. Flood tidal flow is modeled as a potential flow sink with the water being drawn into the inlet from one or more dominant offshore areas depending on the offshore bottom slope. Sediment transport expressions are evaluated at various locations within the offshore flow field and the sediment deposition depth is calculated at that location over one tidal cycle. Model results are plotted and compared to field data for analysis.

By field testing, and comparing the recorded data with the theoretical GPS data, it was seen that non-DGPS could be rather accurate. Furthermore, it can be justified for a GPS unit to eliminate the Z coordinate measurement since vertical position errors are larger than horizontal errors, which may lead to improved accuracy. On the other hand, some 'visibility problems' were encountered while testing the GPS units under driving conditions. Different ways to compensate for this disadvantage were studied. In the end, the different features of the GPS unit were discussed and a way to improve the system was also proposed.

Field tests were designed to evaluate the performance of large diameter flexible pipes of 36 in. (915 mm.) and 48 in. (1050 mm.) under shallow burial depths subjected to the actual vehicle loading. The test pipes included high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes, steel pipes and aluminum pipes. AASHTO standard pipe installation procedures were followed and pipes subjected to vehicle loads simulating the effect of HS 20-44 trucks. Measurements of interior pipe-wall strains, soil pressures at different depths and pipe deformations were taken to determine the influence of surface vehicle loads. Results of field tests are compared with those based on theoretical analyses.

The time for chloride concentration reach the threshold value that initiates corrosion in the reinforcement has been determined by Fick's law, extended to 2-D and 3-D chloride diffusion, for (a) uncracked concrete, and (b) for cracked concrete with the Simplified Smeared Approach (SSA). The structural integrity of the concrete circular pile is compared before and alter repair, by (a) finite element modeling using ANSYS software with the maximum deflection, and (b) beam strength analysis to find the moment capacity for cracked and ultimate conditions. The overall findings indicate the adequacy of the repair procedures.

Concerning the toxic volatile organic compounds, the simulations indicate that benzene exceeded the previous permissible air quality standard. Toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene values remained within allowable concentration levels. Long-term annual benzene emissions from stationary sources exceeded the former reference concentration of 0.12 mug/m 3 about five times per year, whereas the data for 8 and 24 hours were relatively low. Simulation results for the mobile sources demonstrated that the emission factor is a highly sensitive parameter. Possible realistic scenarios at Port Everglades were obtained through varying benzene concentrations. The results are plotted as concentration contours, in order to visualize areas of suspected health risk associated to air pollution. Compared to the Reference Concentration for Chronic Inhalation Exposure, EPA, the modeled results appear significantly less.

During the dry season, no OSTDS impact was detected. OSTDS appear to work properly during the dry season.

Mechanical properties of CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete members, protected with secondary insulation, were investigated, before and after (residual) direct fire exposure. Direct fire contact resulted in a reduction in capacity of 9-20% for CFRP-strengthened RC beams, and 15-34% for CFRP-strengthened RC columns. Furthermore, a dimensional analysis was developed for a heat transfer relationship between full and small-scale specimens, allowing a ¼ exposure time reduction for the latter. Results from experimental investigations demonstrate benefits of employing secondary fire protection to CFRP-strengthened structures, in spite of the glass transition temperature being exceeded in the early stages of the elevated-temperature exposure. Therefore, it is suggested, that fire protection is necessary for a CFRP-strengthened structural member to retain integrity throughout the duration of the fire exposure, and upon return to ambient temperature.

NEXRAD (Next Generation Radar) technology offers water management officials the advantage of providing a spatial account of rainfall, although the relative quality of radar rainfall measurements remains largely unknown. The intent of this study is to examine the relationship between gauge-adjusted NEXRAD data and corresponding rain gauge measurements in order to assess the relative performance of radar and rain gauge technologies for a variety of different conditions.

Show moreA comprehensive laboratory investigation was conducted to evaluate the primary and secondary compression behavior of undisturbed organic silts and peats obtained from 11 locations along SR 15/US 98 in Palm Beach County, Florida. A total of 43 consolidation tests were performed. The primary objectives were as follows: (i) to conduct a series of standard consolidation tests to determine the Compression Index, Cc, and the Coefficient of Consolidation, cnu; (ii) to determine the Secondary Compression Index, Calpha, at stress levels (sigmanu'/sigmap') ranging from 0.30 to 1.15; and (iii) to employ the well-known Time-Stress-Compressibility concept to establish a unique relationship between C alpha and Cc. It was found that for all practical purposes, the Calpha/C c ratio at any stress level is 0.03, which is consistent with the values reported in the literature for similar soils. A constant Calpha/Cc ratio provides an approximation of Calpha once C c is determined from a standard consolidation test, and without the need of ongoing laboratory testing to predict long-term settlement.

Modeling the pipe-soil system is made using plane strain and thin ring assumptions. A thin ring model using Castigliano's theorem is developed to analyze the behavior and response of a flexible pipe under well defined loading conditions and simulate the behavior of the buried pipe under the live load application. Laboratory work was carried out to study the pipe behavior and response under two-point, three-point, and four-point loading configurations. The thin ring model predictions show good agreement with classical solutions specially valid for two-point and three-point loading configurations. Laboratory results were also in good agreement with the predictions. Laboratory results show that the maximum tensile strain for the four-point loading test occurs at inner pipe crown region. Comprehensive efforts were made to correlate the thin ring model predictions with the field test results; however, it appears that the thin ring model cannot be used to simulate the effect of the live load application. A major source of the differences between the predicted and measured values is attributed to the applied load magnitude. A further investigation was carried out to examine the applicability of the model to study the general pipe behavior. The predicted hoop pipe wall strain profile was found to be similar to that of the reported strain profile by Rogers under overall poor soil support condition. Comparison of soil stress distribution shows that the 2D prediction approach provides nonconservative results while the FE analysis agrees more favorably with the measured pressure data. Overall, FE analysis shows that a linearly elastic isotropic model for the surrounding soil and flexible pipes with a fully bonded pipe-soil interface provides a reasonable prediction for soil pressures close to the buried pipes.

A 2-D plane strain linear elastic analysis was performed with ANSYS finite element software on full-scale MSW landfill structures (with and without geogrids), having slopes of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3. Both local and global factors of safety were determined employing the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, and compared with traditional solutions using the Bishop's Modified Method. It was found that the landfill slopes could be steepened up to 1:1 using geogrid reinforcement, resulting in higher storage capacity and consequential environmental and economic benefits.

The tested membranes showed stable and similar performance under the pilot conditions. However, pilot tests were sensitive to pH variations (pH>6.2). The main barrier for increasing the water recovery was fouling caused by iron, carbonate hardness, and iron bacteria. A preliminary cost analysis showed that there is an apparent econom ic advantage when the recovery is greater than 90%. Estimated water cost at 95% recovery is $1.99 compared with $2.69 at the typical 85% recovery.

Show moreThis study presents and illustrates a methodology to calculate the capacity of an existing reinforced concrete bridge under a non-conventional blast load due to low and intermediate pressures. ATBlast program is used to calculate the blast loads for known values of charge weight and stand off distance. An excel spreadsheet is generated to calculate ultimate resistance, equivalent elastic stiffness, equivalent elastic deflection, natural period of the beam, the maximum deflection, and the maximum rotation in the support for a simple span solid slab and T-Beam bridges. The allowable rotation could be taken as to two degrees. Naval Facility Engineering Command (NAVFAC) approach was adopted, where the inputs were material properties, span length, and area of reinforcement. The use of the Fiber Reinforced Polymer for increasing the capacity of an existing bridge is also presented in this study. Parametric studies were carried out to evaluate the performance of the solid slab and T-Beam bridges under the assumed blast load.

Also common is the use of radar (NEXRAD) data to provide better spatial distribution of precipitation as well as infilling missing rain gage data. Conventional regression models are often used to capture highly variant nonlinear spatial and temporal relationships between NEXRAD and rain gage data. This study aims to understand and model the relationships between radar (NEXRAD) estimated rainfall data and the data measured by conventional rain gages. The study is also an investigation into the use of emerging computational data modeling (inductive) techniques and mathematical programming formulations to develop new optimal functional approximations. Radar based rainfall data and rain gage data are analyzed to understand the spatio-temporal associations, as well as the effect of changes in the length or availability of data on the models. The upper and lower Kissimmee basins of south Florida form the test-bed to evaluate the proposed and developed approaches and also to check the validity and operational applicability of these functional relationships among NEXRAD and rain gage data for infilling of missing data.

Show moreThree vital factors, namely environmental protection, savings in costs, and strength/durability benefits, make it advantageous to incorporate fly ash of controlled quality and composition in all concrete made from construction demolition (C&D) recycled aggregate. The specific objective of this research was to compare the performance characteristics of High-Volume-Fly-Ash (HVFA) structural concrete containing C&D aggregate with that of normal recycled aggregate concrete containing no fly ash. A coordinated experimental program was undertaken which comprised of ( 1) Compressive and Split Tensile strength tests; (2) ASTM durability tests by measuring resistance to chloride-ion penetration; and (3) Flexural strength tests on reinforced concrete beam specimens. Three mix designs were used, all of which had the same water/cement ratio of 0.45 and the same amount of recycled aggregate/yd^3. Mix 1 contained cement and no fly ash, Mix 2 contained 16% replacement of cement by weight, and Mix 3 contained 40% replacement of cement, called a HVF A mix. Results indicate that fly ash increases compressive strength, improves both moment carrying capacity and tension resistance, and increases resistance to chloride-ion attack.

This thesis proposes a method to evaluate the effects of conventional blast loads on a two span continuous composite steel girder bridge system. The bridge design is based on AASHTO LRFD method. Resistance capacities of bridge deck and composite steel girder are calculated according to AASHTO specifications. Equivalent blast pressures on the bridge components are obtained. Response and performance of concrete deck, steel girders, and supporting piers are evaluated under typical blast loads. The blast induced force in the bridge components are computed in the static analyses for varying amounts of TNT. The blast effects in the supporting pier are determined using both static and dynamic analyses. Further research needs to be done in the dynamic analysis of the bridge system subjected to blast loads.

Although soil stabilization has been largely used with remarkable results in soft, expansive and non-organic soils, limited research and practice exist in the implementation with highly organic soils. The main motivation of this research was to investigate the effects of cement stabilization on the compressibility behavior of organic rich soils, and develop mix design criteria for optimum cement contents necessary to induce the desired engineering behavior. This optimized mix design may provide guidelines for Deep Mixing Methods in organic soils.

Show moreRadar rainfall estimates have become a decision making tool for scientists, engineers and water managers in their tasks for developing hydrologic models, water supply planning, restoration of ecosystems, and flood control. In the present study, the utility of a power function for linking the rain gauge and radar estimates has been assessed. Mean daily rainfall data from 163 rain gauges installed within the South Florida Water Management District network have been used and their records from January 1st, 2002 to October 31st, 2007 analyzed. Results indicate that the power function coefficients and exponents obtained by using a non-linear optimization formulation, show spatial variability mostly affected by type of rainfall events occurring in the dry or wet seasons, and that the linear distance from the radar location to the rain gauge has a significant effect on the computed values of the coefficients and exponents.
