Examining these changes in the depiction of themes such as city, community, and history, we can better understand the process of disillusionment by which Borges begins with a utopic view of Buenos Aires that becomes dystopic before it is abandoned in order to imagine a new utopia.

Within these, the most affected are people from the rural areas, minorities such as women, adolescents, children, and the indigenous communities. This work analyses the literary representation of trauma and the internal displacement in Colombia in Los ejércitos (2007) by Evelio Rosero. The introduction provides historical context and definitions of trauma. The analysis of the impact of trauma on the collective and the minorities follows. For theoretical and historical references, this thesis draws concepts mostly from psychoanalysis, Irene Visser’s modified Grid Theory of social thought, and official Colombian documents. The thesis examines how the structure of Los ejércitos and some of its characters provide the representation of trauma in relation to the armed conflict in Colombia and the internal displacement that ensued.

In vitro studies have shown L1-CAM is proteolytically cleaved and the intracellular domain (ICD) translocates to the nucleus. There it is involved in the upregulation of genes that are involved in DNA damage response, cell cycle progression, apoptosis and cellular differentiation. In some forms of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) proteolytic cleavage of L1-CAM are enhanced. We studied the effects of expression of NrgICD in vivo. Our results indicate that ubiquitous expression of NrgICD like its vertebrate homologue resulted in upregulation of NBS1 and c-myc in Drosophila. We found that the ubiquitous expression of NrgICD resulted in reduced viability in various models of oxidative stress. This suggests that enhanced proteolytic cleavage of Nrg/L1-CAM contributes to the pathology of AD. Our results may provide new insights into the cellular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases.

Although both states followed a similar pattern of dominance, resentment, nationalism, and socialism in their recent histories, their differing overall histories dictated the intensity of their leaders' personality cults. Korea's long history of self-imposed isolationism in combination with xenophobia was continued in Kim's self-reliance ideology and allowed for a fanatical personality cult to develop. Cuba's only experience with isolation was that imposed by the United States through its embargoes, and the resulting hostility between Cuba and the United States actually helped legitimize Castro's regime and personality cult.

Examples of such marginalized groups included peasants, afro-Cubans, and other low-class citizens. But homosexuals did not fall under this social reform and were initially stigmatized with a conservative discourse. Reinaldo Arenas explores this issue in his autobiography Before Night Falls (1992). The text tells his story as a young man that was initially enthusiastic about the Cuban Revolution, but who later grew resentful towards an oppressive political system that led to his persecution, his incarceration, and finally in 1980 his exile. This research study explores Arenas’ queer approach for an alternative interpretation of Cuban society that challenges the Revolution’s homophobic political discourse during its first couple of decades.

This thesis examines the role of food as a social critique in the picaresque genre of Spanish literature. The picaresque novel of 16th and 17th century Spain revolves around the pseudo-autobiographical narrative of a rogue hero who survives life by any means possible, including thievery and deception. The genre demonstrates that only the upper classes of society were enjoying the fruits of Golden Age Spain. In particular, Lazarillo de Tormes and El buscón are the novels used in this analysis...

Avellaneda’s narrative establishes a difference between ethnic, gender and economic privileges portrayed through the most influential characters in the novel: the slave, Sab; the daughter of the landowner, Carlota; orphaned daughter of Carlota’s uncle, Teresa; and Enrique, a British landowner and Carlota’s fiancé. This study pays particular attention to Teresa’s resistance to the patriarchal values in a colonial society ruled by Spain. I consider this character crucial to understand the antislavery discourse that Avellaneda incorporates in her novel to destabilize a hierarchical and prejudiced society. Furthermore, I will illustrate the major role of Teresa in the novel, whose presence has been shaded by the central female character, Carlota, and frequently underestimated by the critics.

Mirabal implements an important biographical component in her testimony while Álvarez utilizes the genre of historical fiction to describe the events leading to the sisters’ assassination in 1960. This thesis explores the concepts of “truth” and “fiction” in Mirabal’s memoir and Álvarez’s historical novel, arguing that the range of objectivity and subjectivity in these two genres are interchangeable in the representation of this tragic episode in the history of the Dominican Republic.

The novel, told from many perspectives, focuses on her return, the dictator’s last day, and the story of the four conspirators waiting to ambush him the night of May 30th 1961. My study analyzes the complex narrative structures of the novel as masterful “rupturing” techniques. Through these the reader pieces together the broken body politic of a traumatized nation as Urania reconstructs in painful detail how the impotent dictator digitally rapes her to ensure her body bears the mark of his brutal anger and frustration.

In a period when Europe was ravaged by wars, numerous Europeans accepted the refuge offered by the small country. However, it was not until the mid-1950s when Asians, particularly Japanese people, accepted to relocate to the Dominican Republic. As a result, Trujillo accomplished repopulating the Dominican-Haitian border with people of non-African descent and growing the agriculture sector with the perseverance of the Japanese immigrants. In my research, I explore the process of assimilation and hybridization of this important community that counts for approximately 550 Dominican-Japanese.

The importance of this work hinges on the recognition of Mulder as a female poet whose work has been marginalized from the literary canon, like that of many other women of her era. This thesis focuses on Mulde''s third poetry collection, Sinfonâia en rojo, which was published in 1929 and stands out for its symbolic richness and its romantic and modernist features. Part of this research deals with the symbolism of the color red and the meanings that red acquires within the context of the poems. The main leitmotivs of Sinfonâia en rojo are the images of fire and blood, which are used to make reference to both the emotional and the physical world of the poetic voice. The research also focuses on the connections between Mulder's work and that of her contemporaries, and it suggests that she was in contact with the literary world of her era.

It also presents the theoretical frame, the critical analysis, and the pitfalls of the translation. "Spanish Winter" is narrated in the first person by the protagonist, a troubled US American, divorced woman who travels by herself to Spain in the winter. The importance of this text lies in the quest for identity of a female character whose journey symbolizes a search for herself. This postmodern tale, which depicts cultural exchanges between Spaniards and a US American woman and presents a contemporary theme told by a female narrator traveling abroad, is extremely relevant in today's globalized world. It is a valuable text whose translation promotes a fruitful literary exchange between the United States and the Spanish-speaking countries.

The allegory of concentric circles facilitates the explanation of the complexity of these processes that intertwine and interact expanding to the infinite. This is not only a metaphor but also a metaphysical dilemma which Borges has utilized to explain time not as an absolute progression where a before and after are feasible but rather as a cyclical idea in which the return and the repetition are eternal. The three key concepts will be analyzed, using as an example, a short story by one of the English writers who Borges has cited and translated, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, "The Three Horsemen of Apocalypse." Borges translated Chestertons tale prior to writing "The Garden of Forking Paths," and this thesis demonstrates how we may discern Chesterton's influence on the Argentine's fiction, particularly within the genre of the detective story.

Soriano's work, set in the fictitious town of Colonia Vela, in the state of Buenos Aires, illustrates in a small scale the different social and political components that make up the national body. Historical and fictitious elements dramatize the conflict among the left and right wings of the Peronist Party. These two factions divide the villagers, who hold diverse images of Perâon and what the party entails, while putting their political beliefs and physical well-being at stake. Quickly the two splinter parties trigger an open arm conflict while fighting under the same slogan: "Perâon o muerte". Supported by diverse theoretical perspectives, this thesis reveals that Soriano's novel sheds light into one of the most confusing periods of Argentinean history while rescuing the sacrifices of the people.

Mariategui's text, an essay, takes a deductive approach to prove that the "Indian's problem" in Peru is related to the concentration of land in the hands of his oppressors. Using Marxist theory, Mariâategui shows that only through more equitable distribution of land can the indigenous Peruvian's fortunes be improved. Castellanos chooses the years of the Cardenas presidency (1934-1940) for her novel, a work that deals with the legacy of the Mexican Revolution. Set in Chiapas, Mexico, autobiographical and fictitious elements and characters dramatize a conflict over indigenous rights to land and education on a criollo family's enormous estate. Supported by intellectual criticism from a number of fields, this thesis connects episodes from Castellanos's novel with the core premises of Mariâategui's essay.

Meanwhile, Dominican millionaire Hugo Graubel manages his life publicly as a heterosexual husband and privately as a gay man and strongly attempts to capture enigmatic Sirena Selena. Whereas the Dominican, pre-adolescent, poor, and mulatto Leocadio discovers the veiled world of tourism that offers alternate possibilities of economic survival. The previous generations' transgression of society's binary definitions created alternate spaces that continue to pave the way for future generations that will refuse and resist conforming to static patriarchal and heterosexual mainstream classifications.

There was a significant effect of age on all sub-tests scores where older children obtained higher scores. Also, there was a significant effect of sex and type of school in some tasks, where girls had higher performance than boys and, the students of PrS scored higher than students of PuS. An interaction between type of school and sex was also evident: PrS girls showed higher performance than other groups in some tasks of attention and memory, especially those that imply verbal information processing. There was a significant correlation between the parents’educational level and the performance in G2. Sons of parents with high educational level show better performance than sons of parents with low educational level. The results are discussed in terms of the environmental variables effect on the development of attention and memory.

This project examines politicization of the university. Critics have long charged that politics, and specifically identity politics, has infiltrated the classroom via radical professors. Scholars who lament the decline of the western canon claim that a massive wave of new untested works - largely written by women and people of color - have replaced the works of dead white men leaving our students ill-prepared. Scholars who lament the decline of the western canon claim that a massive wave of new untested works - largely written by women and people of color - have replaced the works of dead white men leaving our students ill-prepared. While most of the scholarship in this area has been written in the area of English literature departments, this project focuses on the field of Hispanic Literature. If identity politics has challenged the canon in the university, it is expected that within identity-based disciplines the infiltration of politics should be substantial. To test the politicization of the university, I examined 38 Hispanic Literature survey courses from a variety of American universities. I found a high degree of consistency among these syllabi and concluded that critics of the university have at best overstated their case.

Show moreThe translation of Geny Vilas-Novas' novel Adeus, Rio Doce emphasizes the importance of promoting a literary exchange between Brazil and the Spanish-speaking world. This study analyses contemporary Brazilian literature and situates the author in the post-modern literary movement, stressing two post-colonial fundamental themes: emigration and feminine literature. Millions of undocumented emigrants from Latin America live nowadays in the United States displaced in the American society and leave suffering family members abandoned in their native countries. One of the roles of Latin- American women writers like Vilas-Novas is to reveal and denounce the subaltern conditions of this emigration movement in the globalization process, under the unusual perspective of those left behind. The linguistic and semantic challenges and difficulties faced during translation are a metaphor for the crossing of linguistic, cultural, social, and historical borders by Latin-Americans in search of better life opportunities.
