Note(s): Three years have passed since Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, formerly a public charity, became a research institute of Florida Atlantic University, a public institution. In February 2011, the Harbor Branch Library relocated to newly designed space in a comprehensively renovated laboratory/office building that provides room for expansion of the physical collection by more than 20 percent. To guide expansion planning, a benchmark collection study of three peer libraries using search terms corresponding to Harbor Branch research areas was conducted. The study identified the institutions with the greatest holdings in the subject matter areas and the relative positions of the Harbor Branch collection, thus revealing the areas most suited for collection development. A search for shared titles within peer collections was tested, and the technique will be applied using subject area-leading collections to help guide development of an acquisition list for the Harbor Branch Library.
