There is probably no machine used more in the aquaculture industry than the water pump. Pumps are devices that move water by imparting energy to it. While pumps can have a number of applications, and be used with many substances, in aquaculture a pump typically is used to either: 1) move water against a gravitational gradient, or 2) increase the speed of water that is already flowing in the desired direction. In aquatic farming, the proper selection of a pump can be critical, since the wrong choice can result in a pump that is too expensive, has an excessively high operating cost, or might fail at a critical time. Clearly the most commonly used pumps are the centrifugal pumps. This published manuscript is available at www.was.org and may be cited as: Landau, M., & Scarpa, J. (2002).
