Note(s): Seafarers are unavoidably aware of bioluminescence. Often beautiful, as when porpoises at a ship's bow streak through luminescent dinoflagellates, outlining their bodies in light and leaving behind persistent glowing tracks, bioluminescence is nearly always noticeable in bow waves, wakes and in breaking waves. Thus, it has implications for many types of naval operations.
