Note(s): An in situ video transect technique has been used to identify and map bioluminescent zooplankton based on the spatial and temporal patterns of stimulated bioluminescent displays (1-4). The utility of this mapping technique depends on having an adequate data base of identified displays. Since displays from captured specimens are often radically different from those recorded in situ (1,2), definitive identification of a particular organism with a particular bioluminescent display needs to be confirmed by in situ recordings.
