Note(s): Recent developments in methods for investigating distribution patterns of bioluminescent plankton are providing a new perspective on the luminescent minefield which organisms must negotiate. Using a computer image recognition program that identifies the sources of luminescent displays and maps their coordinates in three dimensions, we have been investigating the 3D distribution patterns of bioluminescent sources in different environments.
