Note(s): This study examined the effect of eyestalk ablation on molt cycle and reproduction of the banded coral shrimp. Stenopus hispidus (Oliver). a decapod popular among marine aquaria hobbyists. Eyestalk ablation significantly shortened the molt interval in the male shrimps: 11-1502.3 ± 0.7. mean ± SE. n = 6) days compared with 15-27 (21.3± 0.9. mean ± SE. n = 6) days for the nonablated (control) individuals. The effect decreased gradually. By the third molt. the interval was not significantly different between the ablated and intact shrimps. The result was more complicated for the female shrimps.
