Note(s): Results of circulation studies conducted over the past decade are reviewed to summarize flow patterns into, through and out of Florida Bay, at the southern end of the Florida Peninsula. Studies conducted along the western boundary of the bay show a net inflow in the north and central sections, and a net outflow from the southern section. Data from tidal channels along the eastern and southern sides of the bay show a long-term net outflow. Data from channels in the interior of the bay indicate a net outflow to the west, south and east. The source of the water leaving the central part of the bay is not yet clear. Studies throughout the bay document a high correlation with wind forcing, but individual channels respond differently. The pattern that emerges is one of continuous interbasin exchanges to support the simultaneous filling and draining of sub-basins within Florida Bay.
