Note(s): Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)attract, retain and award science degrees to AfricanAmericans at a higher rate than majority institutions.Because they offer life-changing and career-orientingexperiences for students, field stations and marinelaboratories are well positioned to help increase thenumber of students opting for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers and oceanscience and education careers, in particular. Two kinds ofpartnerships have developed between Savannah StateUniversity (SSU), an HBCU, and marine laboratories as aresult of federal funding: a Research Experiences forUndergraduates (REU) program between SSU and theHarbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, and aninternship/graduate program between SSU and theSkidaway Institute of Oceanography.
