A laser imaging system currentlybeing developed by engineers atHarbor Branch OceanographicInstitution (HBOI), und er NSF and DukeUniversity sponsorship, affords a methodof collecting orientation data. The system produces three-dimensional maps of allvisible surfaces within a volumetric regionusing a low power laser scanner and proprietarydetector. The resulting 3-D mapco-o rdinates, combined with the measured roll and pitch angles of the instrument, are used to accurately determineorientation of the scanned geologicallyrelevant planes and lines on sea floor outcrops.
