Note(s): Two basic patterns of oogenesis have evolved in the Polychaeta: 1) extraovarian in which oocytesleave the ovary and undergo vitellogenesis while free-floating in the coelomic fluid with or withoutthe aid of attached accessory cells or associated amoebocytes; and 2) intraovarian in which oocytesundergo most of vitellogenesis while retained within the ovary in close association with follicle cells, nurse cells or blood vessels from which they may derive nutrients. The general ultrastructural featuresof oogenesis in polychaetes are discussed and current knowledge concerning the production, transportand utilization of yolk precursors by polychaete oocytes is summarized based on recent morphological, physiological and immunological studies by a number of workers. The evolution ofpolychaete oogenesis is briefly discussed with the author suggesting that species having primitiveoogenesis are those which undergo solitary, extraovarian oogenesis using autosynthetic methods ofyolk production. Species which have intraovarian oogenesis and derive yolk precursors from thecirculatory system are believed to have the most derived method of vitellogenesis known from thePolychaeta.
