Note(s): The Biddulphioid diatoms, Biddulphia titiana (Grunow) Grunow in Van Heurck and Trigonium arcticum (Brightwell) Cleve, have been variously interchanged in the literature. Comparison of their valve and cingular structure revealed several differences. The valve outline of B. titiana is consistently bipolar whereas that in T. arcticum may be bi- or tripolar. The marginal septum in B. titiana is entire; the septum in T. arcticum occurs only at the apices. Labiate processes only occur at the apices in B. titiana and only at the valve center in T. arcticum. Poroid areolae in B. titiana are covered with rota-type vela arranged in a more or less linear pattern in contrast to the loculate areolae in T. arcticum which radiate from the valve center. The cingular suture in B. titiana is undulate whereas the suture in T. arcticum is straight. It was found to be the most distinctive feature in B. titiana and was used to formulate the sequence of frustule element development.
