| Note(s): | Traditional Montaigne scholarship focuses on his invention of the essay, skepticism and self reflection, and on a hermeneutic quest for the Essays' philosophical bases. This work takes a historical approach to appraise Montaigne as a rhetor dismayed by the violent religious struggles of his time, and the Essays as carefully couched moral appeals to peers seeking to undercut the combatants' lethal certitudes by mocking the supposed powers of human reason. His approach is highly relevant to 21st century environmental battles involving similar theologically-infused rhetorical undertows. The paper grows out of Jan Hokenson's "PI in France" course and relates to Gary Brooten's PI track joint concentration in rhetoric and environment; it also incorporates materials and ideas developed from courses taught by Robin Fiore, Noemi Marin and others. He will be seeking candidacy this fall and writing his dissertation in 2009.
