The opossum pipefish Oostethus
lineatus (Kaup) is a euryhaline, tropical pipefish
rarely occurring in subtemperate and temperate
waters. This species was first recorded
(as Doryichthys lineatus Kaup) from North
America by Fowler (1945) who reported the collection
of two specimens (one a brooding male)
at McClellanville, South Carolina. At present
only 87 specimens have been recorded from the
United States (Fowler, 1945; McLane, 1955;
Christensen, 1965; Dawson, 1970; Herrema,
1974). Florida Atlantic University. Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute contribution 74 This manuscript is an author version with the final publication available and may be cited as: Gilmore R. G.
