This species was first recorded (as Doryichthys lineatus Kaup) from North America by Fowler (1945) who reported the collection of two specimens (one a brooding male) at McClellanville, South Carolina. At present only 87 specimens have been recorded from the United States (Fowler, 1945; McLane, 1955; Christensen, 1965; Dawson, 1970; Herrema, 1974).
