During 1978 a series of historical, engineering, and oceanographic research contracts were initiated by the North Carolina Division of Archives and History to identify and collect information related to the U.S.S. Monitor. In addition to evaluating the present knowledge of the site, the studies were designed to identify additional material that would be essential in the adoption of a management plan that outlines research and management, goals and objectives for the Monitor Marine Sanctuary.
