The Indian River Study was initiated in September 1973 by a grant from the Atlantic Foundation to the Smithsonian Institution in support of a proposal for a three-year study entitled, "The distribution, ecology and systematics of the fishes and decapod crustaceans of the Indian River in relation to selected environmental factors". This is volume 1 of a two volume annual report for the year 1973-1974. Volume 1 contains chapters 1-5. Volume 2 contains chapters 6-10. Cover design by Michael Laffey.
