Note(s): Mr. Gerald Posner’s interview opens with his maternal family’s escape from the Soviet Union and their arrival at Ellis Island. Born in 1927 in the back of a Manhattan taxi cab, Mr. Posner discussed his memories of the Great Depression and early education as well as his father’s and grandfather’s employment during and after the depression. Throughout his life, Mr. Posner held a keen interest in science and medicine; in fact, as a high school student he studied with renowned Zoologists A.J. Gopher and Libby Hyman of the American Museum of Natural History. In 1951, Mr. Posner received his Masters Degree in Marine Science from University of Miami and in a PhD in Oceanography from Yale University. The interview discusses his first marriage, second marriage, oceanographic career with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Malaysian commercial fishing industry.
