UNIVERSAL VALUES IN THE POETRY OF SYLVIA PLATH
- Date Issued:
- 1982
- Summary:
- The generic qualities in the poetry of Sylvia Plath can be seen in all four volumes of her work. All of her poetry shows a progression and a development. The Colossus poems have a logical appeal with a forthright form and an orderly unfolding. The transitional poems of Crossing the Water and Winter Trees are more in troverted and confessional in their style. Finally, the poetry of Ariel is fragmentary and hallucinatory. These three kinds of poetic effects make up the personality or "personal style" of Sylvia Plath. All of Sylvia Plath's poetry is believable and coherent. Her themes are of universal value in that they not only authenticate the life of Sylvia Plath, but they capture the human emotions true to all mankind.
