ROOMS OF THE LOOKING-GLASS: MIRROR STRUCTURES AND IMAGERY IN BORGES AND HAWTHORNE
- Date Issued:
- 1981
- Summary:
- The "mirror" provides significant structure and imagery in the work of Borges and Hawthorne, as illustrated by Borges' "Averroes' Search" and "The Zahir" and by Hawthorne's "Monsieur du Miroir"' and The Scarlet Letter. Neither author regards the mirrors within or of his art as faithful reflectors of things in the Realistic tradition, nor as faithful reflectors of inner truth in the Romantic tradition; rather, each views his art as he does the objects mirrored by it--as darkened, tarnished, made ambiguous hy human perspective. And yet, because the mirror offers hints of truth and promises of understanding, it continually provokes our contemplation.
