Date Issued:

Summary:
A nursing home population in Lake Worth, Florida was studied in terms of a biocultural model utilizing demographic, biological, environmental, and cultural variables. The aim of this research was to discuss ways by which the geriatric patient is biologically and culturally adapting as well as interacting with his/her environment. This aim was best achieved by a study of past and present disease incidence exhibited by patients in the nursing home sub-culture. Blood samples were drawn and typed to test for possible relationships between blood groups and disease. Some types of mental disorders were associated with the patient as an end process of adaptation to the organizational and institutional pressures of the nursing home environment. In this paper, possibilities for further research are suggested which could contribute to an improvement in quality of physical and mental health among geriatric patients in the nursing home sub-culture.
