- This thesis reviews the impact and effects of United States foreign pol icy toward the dictatorial regime of Marcos Perez Jimenez, 1948-1958. Specifically, the thesis underlines the effects of "traditional" United States embracement of any leader so long as he devoutly professed anti-communism and protected United States business interests. The initial chapters vividly discuss Venezuela's first hesitant steps toward democracy, Perez Jimenez's rise and, ultimately, his regime. The remaining chapters underscore the importance that petroleum played in United States-Venezuelan relation s during these years.
