DEALING WITH PROSPERITY AND DEPRESSION: THE INTEREST METHOD IN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE HISTORY UNIT
- Date Issued:
- 1971
- Summary:
- This thesis contends that using the interest method of teaching history motivates learning and maintains the challenge of teaching. The philosophy behind the interest method stems from the conflict between elitist and realist thinking at the community college level. This clash is often reflected in poor student-response and in effective teaching. The interest method integrates the positive points of each philosophy. All student levels are served without sacrificing individual achievement groups or course material. The instructor's intellectual activity is also stimulated promoting teaching efficiency and enthusiasm. The prosperity and depression decades (1920-1940) are chosen to best illustrate the interest method.
