Using community structure of the scholarship of the journals Psychology of Women Quarterly (PWQ) and Feminism & Psychology, we examine and seek to understand the empirical structure of feminist psychology. An analysis of these two journals by decade will help determine whether the scholarship of feminist psychology has changed as much as women’s studies. In doing so, one can also address the question of how psychological is women’s studies (and vice versa).

Several species of stinging ants are known to attack vertebrates. In March and July 2018, I conducted ant surveys using tuna baits at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS), in Jupiter, Florida, to assess possible threats to captive animals posed by such ants. BWS rehabilitates native Florida vertebrates that are injured or orphaned and houses others that cannot be released back into the wild. BWS rehabilitates native Florida vertebrates that are injured or orphaned and houses others that cannot be released back into the wild. Of the 13 ant species found, two may pose a threat to the animals at BWS: the little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) and the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta). W. auropunctata, known for stinging the eyes of vertebrates, was the most prevalent species, found at 40% of the baits. S. invicta, known for its powerful sting, occurred at 7% baits. Facilities that house animals outdoors, such as zoos and wildlife rehab centers, should take care to ensure the animals are kept safe from possible attack by ants.

The 8th Amendment forbids excessive bail, but this essential Constitutional protection has been undermined. The Supreme Court held in U.S. v. Salerno that the Constitution does not entitle defendants to bail and allowed federal courts to deny bail if they deem the defendant a threat to the community. Salerno that the Constitution does not entitle defendants to bail and allowed federal courts to deny bail if they deem the defendant a threat to the community. However, both history and the current problems in the bail system demonstrate the Court erred in its ruling. Contrary to Salerno, the 8th Amendment was intended to provide a right to bail for all defendants who posed no threat to the judicial process. In order to protect essential rights of due process and presumption of innocence, Salerno ought to be overturned, a right to bail ought to be found within the Excessive Bail Clause, and this right should be incorporated to the states.

Although, sleep behavior has been studied with individual fish, the effects of social interactions on sleep has not been studied in any fish species. Astyanax mexicanus offers a model to study sleep because it has multiple morphs derived from a common ancestor. We investigated sleep in Pachón cavefish and surface fish by comparing sleep in individual fish to those in social groups. We discovered that when Pachón cavefish are placed in a social group do not display differences in sleep relative to Pachón fish in isolation. In contrast, surface fish behaved significantly differently in social groups compared to non-social surface fish groups. This study is the first to demonstrate that sociality effects sleep and fish, and suggests this social regulation of sleep was lost in cavefish evolution.

The notion of a Golden Age illustrates society's ideals and as such juxtaposes the banality of quotidian life with highly idealized aesthetical aspirations that the poet is attempting to escape through pastoral poetry. By focusing on different literary movements with particular emphasis on the Spanish Siglo de Oro and the British Romantic period I aim to demonstrate how the contemporary issues—i.e. political unrest and the burgeoning industrial revolution—shape different variations of pastoral poems that constitute the distinctive yet elusive national Golden Age.

Through a comprehensive literature review, this study focuses on empirically supported ways to increase individual pro-environmental behavior (PEB). We found environmental education (EE) is a useful approach to this, particularly when we implement it younger and for longer periods of time. Informal EE is another prime focus as it shows more success than formal EE alone. Connection to nature (CN) is shown to predict PEB as well. Since this study focuses on ways to change behavior, we looked at how to increase CN. Research suggests that increasing experiences with nature increases CN and, subsequently, PEB. Again, this is particularly useful when implemented during childhood. This review suggests more research attention should be placed on these methods in supporting environmental behavior.

The Italian film style of neorealism focuses on capturing the realism Bazin spoke of. In direct contrast to this style is the style of surrealist film, which depict dreamlike images and operate in a fashion that abandons the 'real' and no longer follows the rules of traditional storytelling constructs. Fusing these two styles into a short film, I aim to artistically explore the phenomenon of productivity, procrastination and purpose. My thesis will document my rationale, a critical analysis, and feature the process of this project.

Published reports of B. vittatus have been reported from 11 Florida counties (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Monroe, Collier, Lee, Hendry, and Manatee). In addition, there have been additional unpublished photographic records uploaded to iNaturalist from two more counties (Pinellas and Brevard). These additions expand the known northern range of B. vittatus on both the East and West coasts of Florida.

Several models of burnout have been proposed, but Christina Maslach’s (1976) model continues to be the most prominent, with her Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) remaining the most commonly used burnout assessment tool. According to her model, burnout is made up of three dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficacy. Multiple studies have found that burnout is most highly associated with factors involving an excess of job demands and a lack of personal and professional support. Prolonged burnout is associated with decreased effectiveness on the job, multiple health problems, and an increased risk of substance abuse. Burnout researchers have found evidence which points to increased burnout levels among mental health workers, though a few studies contain evidence that mental health workers may not be at a higher risk of burnout than employees in other fields.

I also review how optimism can lead to happiness and at the same time it can lead to depression due to not being able to reach the goals set out by one’s self. Overall, we discover that being truthful, in many cases, is the best option but at the same time there are cases where telling the truth would be more harmful than beneficial. Taken together, I believe it is best to always take your time to try and understand the situation before making a decision about whether telling the truth is ideal or not ideal.

Show moreThe practice of medicine is changing with the development of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods of machine learning. Coupled with rapid improvements in computer processing, these AI-based systems are already improving the accuracy and efficiency of diagnosis and treatment across various specializations. The increasing focus of AI in radiology has led to some experts suggesting that someday AI may even replace radiologists. These suggestions raise the question of whether AI-based systems will eventually replace physicians in some specializations or will augment the role of physicians without actually replacing them. To assess the impact on physicians this thesis seeks to better understand this technology and how it is transforming medicine. To that end this thesis researches the role of AI-based systems in performing medical work in specializations including radiology, pathology, ophthalmology, and cardiology. It concludes that AI-based systems will augment physicians and are unlikely to replace the traditional physician–patient relationship.

Show moreLearning and memory studies in Drosophila melanogaster have led to advances in understanding fly and mammalian genetics and neurophysiology. Despite extensive studies, there remain gaps in the scientific literature concerning genes and neural pathways involved in learning and memory. There are differences in the memory traces between olfactory and visual memory, yet visual learning has not been studied to the same extent as olfactory learning. Visual place learning has only recently been addressed. We offer a new apparatus for studying visual place learning in D. melanogaster. The new apparatus offers a compelling and cost-effective approach to investigating visual place learning. The most notable difference between the new apparatus and others designed for visual place learning is the use of Peltier units in conjunction with a hydraulic system to supply heat used as a negative stimulus, with the advantages of even heat distribution, ease of construction, and ease of operation.

To evaluate general changes, a t-test was used to compare the total abundance of fish between 2003 and 2018. The results of the NMDS show that the reefs’ fish assemblages do not significantly differ over time. Then, using the years as replicates, the t-test showed a few families differed on an individual basis. The results of this study show that the two selected reefs maintain similar fish stocks.

Alternatively, intranasal administration allows the delivery of these molecules to the brain by bypassing the BBB. To improve intranasal delivery to the brain, novel cyclic opioid peptides DADLE-OL I and II were created as a proof-of-concept using a novel strategy that involved grafting a bioactive sequence into the scaffold of a cyclic peptide. DADLE was grafted into the scaffold of a naturally occurring cyclic peptide, odorranalectin, which binds to carbohydrates expressed on the olfactory nerves. The PerkinElmer AlphaScreen cAMP Assay was used to study the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of DADLE-OL I and II. My research project was focused on optimization of the AlphaScreen cAMP assay to elucidate the SAR of novel cyclic peptide opioid ligands. This study provided valuable structure-activity information for further structural modification of cyclic peptide opioid ligands and the discovery of novel pain medications.

Two events were hosted at local parks where over 60 anglers were asked to fish for at least one hour, record all fish caught or observed, and take a water sample. Researchers then extracted eDNA from the samples and used metabarcoding in order to detect individual species that were present at the fishing location. Once available, this data will be accessible to the public via a website so that they can track the results from their samples. Positive evaluation feedback has demonstrated the success of this program and its ultimate findings have important implications for managing and conserving local fish populations.

Participants in the study included non-treatment-seeking college students who were randomly assigned to different administration methods (purely online or mixed online and in-person) and writing groups (factual and emotional writing, fact-only writing, and non-trauma writing). The study found increased rates of completion in the online administration and factual and emotional writing groups. Textual analysis also found increased negative affect writing with a positive outlook in those who completed the study. Similarly, variables for confidence and authenticity demonstrated difference in group variables indicating instruction adherence.

Show moreIn Fall 2018, John D. MacArthur Beach State Park’s estuary was surveyed to determine the health and distribution of their oysters. These organisms provide important ecological functions, so their populations are an important reflection on the health of the estuary. Hypothesis one is to determine oyster health by comparing environmental conditions, oyster densities, shell heights, and condition indexes today to a 2010 survey. The second hypothesis is to determine where oysters congregate, either on soft or hard substrates or in different estuary zones. Environmental data was taken once a month, two condition indexes were calculated, and densities and shell heights were measured across the estuary once. Research has predicted a decrease in oyster populations, but this study found little health changes in the last decade. Higher oyster densities were found on hard substrates near the boardwalk, suggesting a future 2019 oyster restoration project should focus here.

The first part is a literature review in which I critically discuss relevant sources concerning space and place in order to support my discussion of model homes as a marketing tool shaped by ideals of gender, family, and private space. The second part is an ethnographic photo essay and collection of flash ethnographic fiction pieces in which I present visual data collected onsite at Westlake, a new city of south Florida in which a website, sales center, and set of six model homes are the main sources of advertising for the company selling the homes. I also include six pieces of original ethnographic fiction to accompany the visuals of the six houses. I have chosen to do so in order to add a layer of understanding of the houses that is both critical of the materials produced by the company and supplemental to the lack of active material culture within the houses, as they are uninhabited.
