This nexus created the basis for national unification by and through the use of the kata (trnsl: form or shape). Equally important is the component that integrates artistry into the kata, and eventually, into the kata of Shotokan karate. Show moreMany of Japan’s aesthetic, philosophical and cultural institutions were originated in China and India. This nexus created the basis for national unification by and through the use of the kata (trnsl: form or shape). Equally important is the component that integrates artistry into the kata, and eventually, into the kata of Shotokan karate. This particular occurrence compliments the historically important idea known as kokoro (mind-body-spirit), a Zen term but often synonymous with artistry and the artistic mindset. Kokoro can be seen as the product of cumulative intersections in philosophical discourse, framing Japanese beliefs in all things that led to a complex, yet unified expression of art, as well as a foundation for the inner constitution of each individual practitioner in the martial arts. More importantly, it involves a methodology known as Zen/Budo, referring to the separate but integrated spiritual practices of Zen, as it relates to traditional Zen philosophies. The second part of the conjoined term is Budo, the abbreviated version of Bushido (the “way” of the warrior) that guides the participant to a personal refinement of character and a deeper understanding of self. The combined representation of Zen and Budo summarize a highly regarded protocol for self-assessment and self-development. Thus, the afore-mentioned postulates are presented as the basis of this work.

Singing and dancing are of the utmost importance in American Indian dance traditions, while the expression of percussion instruments is superfluous. Louis W. Ballard has composed a piece of music for percussion ensemble which was inspired by the music and dance traditions of American Indian tribes from across North America. The controversy that this presents is relative to the fact that there is no American Indian tradition for a group comprised exclusively of percussion instruments. However, this percussion ensemble piece, Cacega Ayuwipi, does exhibit the three elements inherent to all American Indian music and dance traditions. Cacega Ayuwipi is consistent with American Indian traditions in that the audience must see the instruments, watch the movements of the percussionists, and hear the percussive expressions in order to experience the musical work in its entirety.

A brief historical study of these two sects’ founders and their theology are presented in this document. All of Bach’s compositions are a reflection of his Christian beliefs but none is greater than his St. Matthew Passion. Although Bach is known to be a member of the Orthodox denomination, by observing the parallels between the beliefs of the two sects and the St. Matthew Passion, this document reveals Bach to take a more liberal view. This thesis intends to show that Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is a universal piece of Christian music that transcends religious denomination. Ultimately, Bach’s faith was centered on Jesus Christ and His message.

Among notable literary minds, Dante Alighieri stands out as an illuminating poet who brings to light the essence and nature of this nefarious character and his influence on mankind. In his revelatory work, the Commedia, Dante touches on but does not explicitly detail the scope and importance that music and specifically, song, has on the redemptive purgation of the soul. This work provides a more in depth investigation into the generally overlooked issue, that is, the origin and initial intent of song, the perversion of which, by whom and why, and Dante’s perception of the subject revealed in his missive to mankind. Along scientific theory, along with other works by Dante to provide a link between Lucifer, music, the sin of pride, and the corruption of the divine.

Show moreThere is limited research available focusing on arts integration at the secondary school level and even less on a children’s chorus curriculum. Therefore, the aim of this qualitative study is to investigate the application of arts integration in a university-based children’s chorus based on historical research, rehearsal observations, and interviews of practicing children’s chorus directors. The pedagogical practices and philosophies of three prominent children’s chorus directors, Robyn Lana, Henry Leck, and Ann Small were conducted to understand the relationship between arts integration theory and practice in their respective children’s choruses. The criteria used to select the participants of this study is based upon their tenure in the field of choral music education, national and international recognition, their publications on music education for children, and their expertise on the child and adolescent singing voice. One of the principal objectives of this study is to discover if the participants are currently implementing arts integration in their respective children’s choruses and, if not, would they be amenable to implementing this type of pedagogy? The study’s research criteria focuses on two possible factors: 1) the expectations of a high level of artistic performance that could affect time availability presenting obstacles to implementing arts integration, and 2) identifying the philosophy and practice towards arts integration amongst the selected children’s chorus directors. The study suggests that a choral curriculum based on arts integration does not appear to diminish or interfere with the rehearsal process in preparation for the choral performance but rather, enhance the total learning and performance outcomes. Research data also suggests the need for materials and resources to assist with the application of an arts integrated curriculum. The three participants acknowledge the value of this type of pedagogy as well as the significance of future research to aid in applying this methodology. Sample lesson plans and choral literature representative of repertoire conducive to creating lesson plans based on arts integration strategies are found in the appendices. However, additional qualitative and quantitative studies are needed to promote arts integration at the secondary choral level.

Following an examination of the musical history of the Latin liturgy, this document examines the changes introduced into music for the Roman Catholic liturgy after Vatican II, discussing how different parishes have subsequently incorporated the teachings of the Council with regard to music for the liturgy. The study then addresses specific post-Vatican II musical settings for the liturgy through an analysis of examples from different cultural backgrounds and a discussion of their positive usage and unifying effects within Catholic communities, in order to demonstrate that through their inclusion of diverse musical and cultural styles united with fidelity to Church teaching, post- Vatican II settings can continue the Church's catholic (universal) mission.

The project's objective was to carefully select ten of this generation's most influential recording artists and, as a musical tribute, produce and record unique arrangements of songs by each of them for an audio CD. Each featured artist has at least a 30 year history of influence and recognition as being among the industry's best, and all remain musically active today. Included are Aerosmith, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Bonnie Raitt, Sting, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Elton John and David Bowie. Retro-Respect was produced and arranged by Kam Falk. Each of the eight vocal and two instrumental songs features a different ensemble with Falk performing on six-string bass, fretless four-string bass, keyboards, vocals and drum/ percussion programming.

Section II defines the Marchesi method, with analysis of her techniques and methodology. Information on three of her most well known students - Nellie Melba, Emma Eames, and her own daughter, Blanche Marchesi, is presented in Section III along with narrative offering insight into Marchesi's personality and character. The thesis concludes with discussion of the viability and applicability of Marchesi's vocal pedagogy one hundred years after her death.
