Twenty-four 3xTg-AD mice were randomly assigned to either an aerobic (AT, n=8), resistance (RT, n=8), or control (CNT, n=8) group. Intervention groups underwent 9 weeks of exercise training. Motor behavior and grip strength were measured pre- and post- intervention. Our results showed a significant increase in hippocampal BDNF expression in AT mice after a 9-week intervention. Further, AT mice were found to have higher concentrations of IGF-I, and improved motor behavior when compared to RT and CNT. No significant differences were observed in IGF-I concentration between RT and other groups. RT improved grip strength after nine weeks of training. These findings support the use of AT and RT as a tool to improve comorbidities found in Alzheimer’s disease.

Additionally, A significant group-by-time interaction was found from pre-to-RIH for BDNF expression in PBMCs (P= 0.046). Further, significant correlations were found between BMI and waist circumference (r= .91, P< 0.001), WHR (r= .51, P= 0.002) and Pre-to-RlH ratio (r=0.58, P=0.008). Young obese subject's BDNF response to maximal exercise was consistent with previous studies. Post-exercise BDNF expressed in PBMCs were significantly higher than rest suggesting immunological-neuroprotective interactions in the CNS.

This study examined the effect of acute aerobic exercise on plasma calprotectin response in obese and normal-weight subjects and its relationship with inflammatory cytokine (IL-6). All subjects (11 obese and 10 normal-weight) performed 30 minutes of treadmill exercise at 75% maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). Blood samples were collected prior to, immediately following exercise, and one hour after exercise. Our results showed higher baseline levels of calprotectin in obese subjects than normal-weight subjects. While acute aerobic exercise increased an elevation in calprotectin and IL-6, no difference was found between two groups. Furthermore, a positive relationship was observed between calprotectin area-under-the curve “with respect to increase” (AUCi) and IL-6 AUCi, even after controlling for cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max). Our results support previous finding that IL-6 may potentially regulate calprotectin expression in skeletal muscle during exercise.

Methods: Subjects (n=12) performed a graded exercise test (GXT) on a cycle-ergometer to assess VO2peak. Subsequently, and on different days, two graded tests were administered (with, without stockings) with 5 minute warm-up at 50 W followed by 5 minute stages at 60 %, 70%, and 80% of max power output. Following the last sub-maximal stage, participants performed 3 - 5 supramaximal trials. Each lasted 30 seconds at 200% of her peak power output with HR, RPE, and BLa measured at the end of each trial. Results: No significant difference was observed between conditions for any metabolic or perceptual measure across workloads while perceived muscle soreness at 24 hours trended towards significance (p=.067). Conclusion: Compression socks did not significantly alter metabolic or perceptual responses to cycling.

PURPOSE: To compare moderate continuous (MCE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIE) effects on serum BDNF levels, and examine the relationship between BDNF and lactate. METHODS: Seven males completed a VO2peak test and two protocols on separate days, (MCE) 28 min at 60% Workrate max (WRmax) and (HIE) 28 min of intervals at 90%WRmax (10- 1 min intervals separated by 2 min of rest). Serum BDNF and lactate were determined prior, during, and following both protocols. RESULTS: BDNF levels (pg/mL) increased from baseline during HIE and MCE (p<.05). The BDNF response to HIE correlated with lactate for area under the curve (AUC) (r=0.901; P<0.05). CONCLUSION: HIE is an effective alternative to MCE at increasing BDNF. Additionally, lactate may act as a measure of intensity or a mediator of the BDNF response to exercise.
