Ecuador is characterized by its variety of ethnic groups, including mestizos, Indians and African descendents that have formed a rich heritage of multiple cultures. Whereas much attention has been given to indigenous and indigenista literature, there is a large gap in Ecuador's literary criticism on its afro-Ecuadorian literature. This thesis examines two afro-Ecuadorian novels, Juyungo (1942) and El ultimo rio (1966). I explore the social and economic environment in which afro-Ecuadorians...

This thesis examines two afro-Ecuadorian novels, Juyungo (1942) and El ultimo rio (1966). I explore the social and economic environment in which afro-Ecuadorians had to live during the beginning of the 20 th century. Whereas Ecuador's contemporary racial ideology and the social construction of the individual dates from the colonial times, the authors of these afro-Ecuadorian novels contest that discrimination and racism and propose a radically different conception of the nation, one more inclusive of its diverse cultures.

The last chapter is a summary and analysis of the play and its characters. Finally, the annotation in English, in which special care was taken to identify all difficult passages; translate them and place them on the same page in which they occur, in such a way as to achieve a balance between the footnotes and the glossary, to make it easier and more enjoyable to read the work.

The concept of "otherness" developed by the author throughout the epic poem, acts as a coordinating nexus between the conquered subject and the conqueror. This alterity tinges the work with a disappointment that is more appropriate of the posterior baroque period, product of the disillusion engendered by the conquista.

This thesis uses a mythological and archetypal approach to prove that the narration--whose underlying element are Andean myths--is structured as the mythological adventure of a hero who must comply with the archetypal rites of passage: separation, initiation, and return. Lituma's trials lead him to a social and spiritual maturity and to discover the mysterious ancestral Peru, disdained by the more westernized Peruvians of the coast. The Andeans' fear of foreigners is represented by the myth of the pishtaco or throat-cutter, counterpart of the classical Minotaur. The encounter of the two scissioned worlds is only possible through love and friendship, in the framework of a pluralistic society, which is suggested by the novel's resolution.

- Black woman as an erotic being in Spanish-Caribbean narrative.

Characterization of Black women as erotic beings in Spanish-Caribbean narrative has shifted significantly from 1880 to 1990. Their representation as totally submissive and erotic beings has evolved into that of socially conscious and self accepting Black women. In Villaverde's Cecilia Valdes (1882), Cecilia and Maria de la Regla are depicted as objects of male sexual desires. Diaz's Pascua in Cumboto (1948) and Asturias' Mulata de tal (1963), although eroticized, insinuate an underlying...

Diaz's Pascua in Cumboto (1948) and Asturias' Mulata de tal (1963), although eroticized, insinuate an underlying androgynous nature which makes them more assertive in their use of sexuality. However, it is contemporary women writers who dismantle the erotic stereotype: Ferre's "Cuando las mujeres quieren a los hombres" (1974) portrays a Black prostitute who, advances socially and economically. Cabrera's Nana in "La tesorera del diablo" (1971) is the bearer of ancestral knowledge and moral values, and Cartagena Portalatin's Aurora, in "La llamaban Aurora," (1978) speaks forcefully on social issues and fully accepts herself as a Black woman.

At present, his work is not well-known outside of Puerto Rico. His readership is limited to Spanish speakers since he wrote exclusively in Spanish and his works have not been translated. This study introduces the author to the English-speaking reader, locating the work in its literary context, and presents a critical analysis and, to my knowledge, the first English translation of his short story "Vivir del cuento." It includes a discussion of the controversy regarding the appropriateness of English in Puerto Rican literature.

But more than a task of classifying, the thesis itself is a work of interpretation, which required broadening the research boundaries previously employed. Confronting the dominance of Western discourse that has shaped how we understand Andean literature, I identify the elements of indigenous Andean discourse that are deeply embedded in the novel. This perspective may decisively influence the way we read Latin American Literature and hopes to more rigorously draw attention to the presence of ancestral indigenous civilization in the cultural identity of Latin America.

And eventually, were co-opted by the rhetoric of each fraction, thereby becoming murderers, victims, or both. Colombian writer Gustavo Alvarez Gardeazabal recreated this time in two of his novels, Condores no entierran todos los dias y El ultimo gamonal. His historical narrative accounts the events and succeeds in recreating the languages and practices of La Violencia. This study will address these themes and explain how Gardeazabal portrays the role of the conservative State and its connections with criminal practices.

This work analyses the literary representation of trauma and the internal displacement in Colombia in Los ejércitos (2007) by Evelio Rosero. The introduction provides historical context and definitions of trauma. The analysis of the impact of trauma on the collective and the minorities follows. For theoretical and historical references, this thesis draws concepts mostly from psychoanalysis, Irene Visser’s modified Grid Theory of social thought, and official Colombian documents. The thesis examines how the structure of Los ejércitos and some of its characters provide the representation of trauma in relation to the armed conflict in Colombia and the internal displacement that ensued.

I link the symbols still used today to depictions of pre-Inca mythology and the cultural inclusions from Hispanic culture that have created a syncretism from processes of transculturation.

Columbus was driven by intense feelings of divine providence and saw his project in biblical and prophetic terms. In his diaries and letters, as well as his Book of Prophecies, Columbus' religious fervor shows a messianic zeal and his rhetoric mimics that of the newly emerging Spanish Empire who, in tum, mimicked the messianic and imperialist rhetoric of the Catholic Church. This zeal was not particular to Columbus' personality but rather it reflects the common beliefs of his times. The cosmology of Columbus was a composite ofvarious Medieval and early Renaissance philosophers whose erroneous conceptions of geography and apocalyptic visions of the future were based on astrological patterns and various prophecies in the Bible rather than empirical facts.

Aguirre was made a scapegoat, in Girard ian terms, not only for that reason but due to his critique of what Angel Rama defined as the "Lettered City," a rebuke voiced in the infamous letter he wrote to the Spanish king denouncing imperial institutions in the Americas. 20th century, Spanish writer Ramon J. Sender's novel, La aventura equinoccial de Lope de Aguirre (1964), reverses the historical discourse in order to use Aguirre's attack on the "Lettered City," to criticize the intellectuals who supported Franco's regime in Spain, as well as the Catholic Church. This thesis's critical reading of the source chronicles on which Sender based his novel leads to a more profound understanding of both the early modem imperial and the modem fascist violence unleashed, not only by supposed "tyrants-scapegoats" the likes of Aguirre, but by power itself: that of monarchies and dictators.

My study shows how Carpentier and Roumain incorporate the "black subject" in their narratives tin order to generate a national identity to be used as an weapon against U.S. influence in their countries. I also analyze how the characterizations of these "black subjects" in ¡Ecue Yamba O! and Gouverneurs de la rosee, function within the Cuban and Haitian nationalist ideologies of the time period.
