This thesis emphasizes the visibility of the translator as an agent who promotes cultural exchange. This project includes a translation of Jennifer Egan's short story "Spanish Winter" from her collection Emerald City and Other Stories (1996). It also presents the theoretical frame, the critical analysis, and the pitfalls of the translation. This project includes a translation of Jennifer Egan's short story "Spanish Winter" from her collection Emerald City and Other Stories (1996). It also presents the theoretical frame, the critical analysis, and the pitfalls of the translation. "Spanish Winter" is narrated in the first person by the protagonist, a troubled US American, divorced woman who travels by herself to Spain in the winter. The importance of this text lies in the quest for identity of a female character whose journey symbolizes a search for herself. This postmodern tale, which depicts cultural exchanges between Spaniards and a US American woman and presents a contemporary theme told by a female narrator traveling abroad, is extremely relevant in today's globalized world. It is a valuable text whose translation promotes a fruitful literary exchange between the United States and the Spanish-speaking countries.

This thesis examines two afro-Ecuadorian novels, Juyungo (1942) and El ultimo rio (1966). I explore the social and economic environment in which afro-Ecuadorians had to live during the beginning of the 20 th century. Whereas Ecuador's contemporary racial ideology and the social construction of the individual dates from the colonial times, the authors of these afro-Ecuadorian novels contest that discrimination and racism and propose a radically different conception of the nation, one more inclusive of its diverse cultures.

The introduction has four chapters. It begins with an explanation of the social circumstances in Spain at that time. Followed by a short biography of the authors ; and then, a third chapter dealing with the characteristics of their works in relation to the literary mainstream of Spain. The last chapter is a summary and analysis of the play and its characters. Finally, the annotation in English, in which special care was taken to identify all difficult passages; translate them and place them on the same page in which they occur, in such a way as to achieve a balance between the footnotes and the glossary, to make it easier and more enjoyable to read the work.

The concept of "otherness" developed by the author throughout the epic poem, acts as a coordinating nexus between the conquered subject and the conqueror. This alterity tinges the work with a disappointment that is more appropriate of the posterior baroque period, product of the disillusion engendered by the conquista.

This study analyses contemporary Brazilian literature and situates the author in the post-modern literary movement, stressing two post-colonial fundamental themes: emigration and feminine literature. Millions of undocumented emigrants from Latin America live nowadays in the United States displaced in the American society and leave suffering family members abandoned in their native countries. One of the roles of Latin- American women writers like Vilas-Novas is to reveal and denounce the subaltern conditions of this emigration movement in the globalization process, under the unusual perspective of those left behind. The linguistic and semantic challenges and difficulties faced during translation are a metaphor for the crossing of linguistic, cultural, social, and historical borders by Latin-Americans in search of better life opportunities.

This thesis uses a mythological and archetypal approach to prove that the narration--whose underlying element are Andean myths--is structured as the mythological adventure of a hero who must comply with the archetypal rites of passage: separation, initiation, and return. Lituma's trials lead him to a social and spiritual maturity and to discover the mysterious ancestral Peru, disdained by the more westernized Peruvians of the coast. The Andeans' fear of foreigners is represented by the myth of the pishtaco or throat-cutter, counterpart of the classical Minotaur. The encounter of the two scissioned worlds is only possible through love and friendship, in the framework of a pluralistic society, which is suggested by the novel's resolution.

Characterization of Black women as erotic beings in Spanish-Caribbean narrative has shifted significantly from 1880 to 1990. Diaz's Pascua in Cumboto (1948) and Asturias' Mulata de tal (1963), although eroticized, insinuate an underlying androgynous nature which makes them more assertive in their use of sexuality. However, it is contemporary women writers who dismantle the erotic stereotype: Ferre's "Cuando las mujeres quieren a los hombres" (1974) portrays a Black prostitute who, advances socially and economically. Cabrera's Nana in "La tesorera del diablo" (1971) is the bearer of ancestral knowledge and moral values, and Cartagena Portalatin's Aurora, in "La llamaban Aurora," (1978) speaks forcefully on social issues and fully accepts herself as a Black woman.

The allegory of concentric circles facilitates the explanation of the complexity of these processes that intertwine and interact expanding to the infinite. This is not only a metaphor but also a metaphysical dilemma which Borges has utilized to explain time not as an absolute progression where a before and after are feasible but rather as a cyclical idea in which the return and the repetition are eternal. The three key concepts will be analyzed, using as an example, a short story by one of the English writers who Borges has cited and translated, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, "The Three Horsemen of Apocalypse." Borges translated Chestertons tale prior to writing "The Garden of Forking Paths," and this thesis demonstrates how we may discern Chesterton's influence on the Argentine's fiction, particularly within the genre of the detective story.

Lave between man and woman is the basic lave relationship considered in the investigation. Storm shows how love can overcome loneliness in various ways. The memory of a past love relationship is used to combat present loneliness. The idea of a lasting love relationship is embraced as the only possible solace in man's lonely struggle for existence. The love relationship is the faundation of a chain of generations which links the past, present and future, and, therefore, limits the loneliness inherent in human transitoriness. Love can only limit loneliness in Storm's Novellen, never eliminate it.

In this ostensibly historical novel, Malraux dramatizes the tragic events that took place in Shanghai in March and April 1927: a failed coup attempt by marxist revolutionaries and the bloody scission between general Tchang-Kai-Shek's Kuomintang and the communist party. Europe is thus present in the very premises of the story, through marxism. The influence of the Old Continent permeates all the characters in one way or another, even those from Asia, mainly China, who display this influence in their political, social, religious and artistic outlook or behavior. Malraux uses the characters of the story to deliver a subtle though scathing critique of Europe, in sharp contrast to the traditional, pre-World War One depiction of the continent as the center and provider of culture for the whole world. Europe was the center of the universe, the source of all solutions and explanations in all fields of endeavor, solidly established on the concepts developed since the Renaissance: rationalism, materialism, and individualism. These concepts, which also gave birth to capitalism, were all present in the European colonial system imposed on the new territories and are the object of Malraux's critique.

The decline of the matriarch is a prominent component of Zola's naturalistic scheme for the Rougon-Macquart , manifests not only in the increasing corruption of the progeny across the cycle, but primarily in the monographic depictions of the matriarchs themselves. Working-class mothers in particular embody the conflictual tensions of gender inequities and socio-economic deprivations that lead them to produce child-workers to support the family, typically becoming ever more negligent, on the model of Gervaise. Specifically in Germinal, Zola's largely negative conception of the fictive matriarch begins to change. This shift is sustained in subsequent texts of the cycle: the matriarch still suffers almost total loss (of husband, children, position), but she attains a new insight into the socio-economic system that so devours her offspring, and a new lucidity about her position within it.

In both texts the hero's quest is embodied in two female characters who appear to be each other's counterpart. Like all the other characters, they participate in the overall pattern or play of opposites in the two romances. Like the structure of the text, they can be seen as their own mirrored reflections. In these two works, the duality that characterizes the medieval text leads not only to bipartition but to the reversibility of characters and narrative plot.

But more than a task of classifying, the thesis itself is a work of interpretation, which required broadening the research boundaries previously employed. Confronting the dominance of Western discourse that has shaped how we understand Andean literature, I identify the elements of indigenous Andean discourse that are deeply embedded in the novel. This perspective may decisively influence the way we read Latin American Literature and hopes to more rigorously draw attention to the presence of ancestral indigenous civilization in the cultural identity of Latin America.

Show moreThe period of Colombian history known as La Violencia (The Violence 1948-1963) was characterized by widespread terror and crime. Liberals and Conservatives faced off in a battle to win control over the state, more specifically, to achieve hegemony. Peasants and urban dwellers were in the middle of such confrontation. And eventually, were co-opted by the rhetoric of each fraction, thereby becoming murderers, victims, or both. Colombian writer Gustavo Alvarez Gardeazabal recreated this time in two of his novels, Condores no entierran todos los dias y El ultimo gamonal. His historical narrative accounts the events and succeeds in recreating the languages and practices of La Violencia. This study will address these themes and explain how Gardeazabal portrays the role of the conservative State and its connections with criminal practices.
