Show moreThe purpose of this research project is to investigate the impact adult day care centers have on cognitively impaired older adults and their caregivers. I extracted data from records of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center participants who have given consent and attended the center for a minimum of six months. I have discovered that participants benefit from this day center because they experience an improved quality of life, maintain a higher level of functioning, have more opportunities for socialization, and establish friendships and connections. Caregivers of participants enrolled in the day center also benefit because they receive access to caregiver support groups, are temporarily freed from the responsibility to care, and are pleased that participants attend the center and enjoy attending the center. These findings contribute to the current body of research literature that supports the contributions of adult day care centers.

Conopressins are conopeptides that target vasopressin/oxytocin receptors in vascular smooth muscle cells that are found within blood vessels. The crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) is a homologous peptide found in crustaceans and has been shown to behave as a cardioaccelerator in a homologous system. This study describes the effects of CCAP in Drosophila larvae. We find that CCAP has an inotropic effect by causing a change in the contraction of blood vessels. We further investigate the effects of another possibly cardioactive conopeptide, γ-conopressin-vil, in Drosophila larvae. Elucidating the effects of conopetides in Drosophila larvae may translate to cardioactive therapeutic uses in mammalian systems.

Show moreThe N-acyltransferase enzyme (NAT) is responsible for synthesizing N-acyl-phospatidylethanolamines which is the first step in the synthesis of N-acylethanolamines, an important class of lipids that are used by the endocannabinoid system as signaling molecules. A calcium dependent NAT enzyme has been characterized biochemically but has not been cloned. The purpose of this study was to identify NAT enzyme in Caenorhabditis elegans. The strain MGL107 overproduces NAEs and as a result exhibits delayed growth. We have found that 10 of 35 genes with N-acyltransferase activity are able to restore growth of MGL107. Interestingly, acl-10, acl-12, and acl-13 also showed increased mRNA levels in a strain with reduced NAEs, possibly indicating a compensatory mechanism. These data suggests that these three genes could potentially code for the calcium dependent NAT and should be further analyzed biochemically.

It is an ever-growing issue with more slaves now than at any other point in history, totaling to roughly 27 million victims of the Human Trafficking Slave Trade. More specifically, Miami, Florida is the third largest site for human trafficking in the United States. By studying human behavior and targeting portals for slave trade, the redesigned objects will be placed in airports and suspected establishments in our environment. The irony created by the graphics, specifically on site, will capture attention and stir a public concern about human trafficking. Furthermore, it will also provide the audience with the means to take action. Our objective of this research is to find creative solutions through the redesigning of common items, such as traffic signs, and placing them in the environment to raise public awareness.

Even though some of Bach’s organ pieces were continually played in smaller settings, the wider audience only became exposed to his music after the success of Felix Mendelssohn’s performance of the St. Matthew Passion in 1829. It was this concert that catapulted Bach among the ranks of the important Baroque composers such as Georg Frideric Handel or Antonio Vivaldi.

As a consequence, there is increasing interest in understanding its life history. One difficulty encountered in studying P. maculata is that it lays large, multilayered clutches of very small eggs that are impossible to count without disaggregating the egg mass; which results in the loss of viability. Using a previously described dis-aggregation technique, we weighed, dis-aggregated, photographed, and counted 70 egg masses of P. maculata collected from various locations in Lake Okeechobee. Using the resulting mass and egg numbers we developed an algorithm that reliably relates clutch mass to the number of eggs in a clutch, allowing the estimation of the number of eggs in a clutch without impacting the eggs’ viability and paving the way for investigations into studies on fecundity, hatching rate, etc.

The novel, told from many perspectives, focuses on her return, the dictator’s last day, and the story of the four conspirators waiting to ambush the presidential bullet-proof car on that fateful night of May 30th 1961. My study analyzes the complex narrative structures (Bakhtin’s heteroglossia) of the novel as masterful “rupturing” techniques. Through these, the reader pieces together the broken body politic of a traumatized nation as Urania reconstructs in painful detail how the impotent dictator digitally rapes her to ensure her body bears the mark of his brutal anger and frustration.

In this project, we investigate new ways to process Biosignals using embedded systems and computer simulations. We work with Texas Instruments’ OMAP L-138 Digital Signal Processor and Code Composer Studio IDE to process and analyze the electrical behavior of the human heart (ECG Biosignals). In addition to creating computer codes to process such signals, one expected outcome of this research project is a series of tutorials exploring Biomedical concepts and digital signal processing algorithms. Our goal is to make Biomedical Signal Processing widely accessible, hence our decision to design around low-cost hardware and software, and to make all documentation available online at http://smartsystems.eng.fau.edu/biomedical-signal-processing/.

Parvalbumin-containing (PV+) interneurons, a subtype of GABAergic interneurons, play an important role in cortical circuit function; however, it remains unknown how visual experience shapes their organization. We used immunohistochemistry to observe the organization of PV+ expression in visual cortex through visual maturity. Before visual experience, PV+ cell bodies and processes are most pronounced in layer 5, less in layer 2/3, and generally lacking in layer 4. Within 3 days of the onset of visual experience, PV+ organization undergoes a major shift, with PV+ expression found throughout layers 2-6. We performed dark rearing which determined these morphological changes are due to visual experience. This rapid change in parvalbumin organization may play a role in functional changes associated with the onset of visual experience.

Results from a survey shows 8 out of 10 people are being misdirected around the Boca Raton campus causing delays, traffic, and frustration. The architectural design of the Boca Raton campus buildings makes navigating even more difficult because of their identical qualities. The directory maps on campus fail to inform current position, are visually overwhelming and are outdated. From the research collected, we will create a cohesive navigational system that makes travel easier for visitors, students, and faculty. The new navigational system will comprise of a redesigned directory, numeric building signage, route markers, and an instruction manual.

We have introduced the GUS gene into tobacco plants through Agrobacterium-mediated genomic transformation. The plants that were confirmed to be expressing the GUS gene were grown to propagate a new (T1) generation. The T1 plants were analyzed for tissue specificity of GUS expression. The results to date seem to indicate that there is some variation in GUS expression between plant lines. The mechanisms of GUS gene integration in the plant genome as well as the possible effects it can have on a plant’s genomic structure are assessed.

Show moreA web-based learning system for Organic Chemistry is being integrated into a Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) environment to restructure the existing Organic Chemistry I discussion (OrgoBOND) sections to enhance student learning, improve overall grades, and lower the Organic Chemistry I DFW rates. Students taking Organic Chemistry I are required to participate in a section of OrgoBOND utilizing the web-based learning system in a smaller classroom than in previous discussion sessions. Student performance will be compared to that of students in future semesters participating in the same small PLTL setting, but with traditional recitation format. The advantages of introducing a web-based learning system into PLTL discussion sessions are (1) providing “hints,” (2) offering multiple attempts per question, and (3) instant grading and feedback. The computer assignments are unique to each student and reflect the topic recently reviewed in lecture. We will report on the preliminary results from data being collected on student performance, satisfaction levels, and retention rate changes.

Data gained from this can be used to further study MDMA toxicity. First we used a cryostat to slice the brains and obtain the hypothalamic neurons. Utilizing immunocytochemical techniques, TRH containing cells were identified with anti-TRH antibodies. For a positive control, we compared the established approach of examining corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-containing neurons with our approach of examining TRH neurons. We found that the images of TRH-containing cells were relatively unclear, implicating a quality problem of anti-TRH antibodies used in this study. Further investigation using in situ mRNA hybridization will likely clarify the involvement of TRH in MDMA toxicity.

Show moreThis study analyzes the effects of gender stereotypes on the perception of emotion in hypothetical political candidates. By presenting subjects with various combinations of emotional displays by both male and female candidates, we will be able to see if any gender stereotypes are primed or activated by these displays, and more importantly, the differences in perception of these displays based on the candidate’s gender. For example, if we present the subject with a male candidate who appears aggressive and confrontational, will he be viewed the same way as a female candidate with the same characteristics? Will gender stereotypes cause the female candidate to be perceived more negatively than the male? Previous research has supported the idea that gender stereotypes will effect perception of candidates based on their gender, and this study will help to see if specific stereotypes are primed for application by the subject based on emotional displays.

Recent behavioral studies have shown that RE/RH is critical in cognitive tasks that involve both the HPC and mPFC. Lesion and inactivation studies of the RE/RH, however, do not affect hippocampal dependent spatial behaviors. Here, we examined the effects of electrolytic lesions of RE/RH on an odor-texture discrimination task sensitive to faculties of orbitomedial prefrontal cortices. Rats with RE/RH lesions exhibited small deficits in reversal stages compared to controls. Reversal learning has been found to be anatomically and chemically dependent on normal functioning of the prefrontal cortex. Excitatory input from reuniens to the prefrontal cortex may be involved in mediating behavioral flexibility, the lack of which is a symptom of behavioral disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Podophyllotoxin has been under extensive biochemical investigation since the discovery of its biological activity as a strong microtubule destabilizing mitotic agent. Although these antineoplastic compounds have shown significant activity as cancerous cell growth inhibitors, they lack selectivity and are thus extremely toxic to healthy cells. This has led to a recent interest in the synthesis of Podophyllotoxin analogues in hopes of optimizing the biological selectivity and potency of these semi-synthetic derivatives. The objective of my research in the Roche group is to generate a library of these derivatives for subsequent biological assays to determine their potential as chemotherapeutic agents. In total I have synthesized 22 Podophyllotoxin analogues. Of these 22 derivatives, 14 have been biologically evaluated and 4 were observed to possess promising anti-cancer activity and are currently undergoing further evaluation.

Teaching our future leaders skills applicable to the real world and how to apply these skills in the workplace is an equally important objective of this project. We wish to answer the question of whether or not electric cars are a viable means of transportation from various perspectives such as the consumer, environmental, and business standpoints by analyzing the characteristics of electric cars and their future capabilities. Students will not only participate in research conducted by undergraduate participating students, but also conduct their own research, fabricate their own theories, and benefit the future of STEM.

Our proposal is to collect all recycling receptacles and create a unified system that is easily accessible to all visitors of the FAU campus. Our team of designers will work to develop symbols, a cohesive color scheme, a map of campus displaying receptacle locations, and a poster campaign to promote the new recycling system. Along with the new visual language we will be implementing, we will be decommissioning the current receptacles to instill one single receptacle for all outdoor uses and a smaller size of that same container for indoor environments. Ultimately, we aim to improve the rate at which students, faculty, and staff decrease the ecological footprint of FAU and increase the campus’ sustainability.

Although we are able to recognize people through movement, accuracy of identification of strangers through point-light models is low. Connecting the major points of motion to represent a skeleton might enhance the ability to recognize strangers. This study also wishes to assess whether accuracy will be improved through learning general movement characteristics of individuals. After a learning stage, participants were randomly assigned to match names with either point-light or skeleton models of actor movements. Two of the four actions performed by actors in the testing stage were previously seen during the learning stage. We expect identification from skeleton displays will be higher than for point light displays. We also expect higher accuracy for actions previously seen during the learning stage. The findings and their implications will be discussed.

Thirty-seven undergraduates (6 male) completed questionnaires concerning alcohol consumption throughout the one month duration of the study. Participants performed three cognitive computer tasks at both baseline (T1) and follow-up (T2) assessment. At T2 participants also filled out a drug usage questionnaire. This study stems from a larger longitudinal pilot study. Strong correlations were found for increased cigarette use: the number of drinking days reported, r (34) = .442, p =.007, as well as non-binge drinking days and marijuana use, r (34) =.465, p =.004. Cigarette smokers were more likely than not to partake in multiple drinking behaviors. Marijuana was found to be used more on days in which binge drinking did not occur alluding to a preference to smoke rather than drink excessively while smoking marijuana.
