This report summarizes the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) surveys during four cruises from 2012 to 2015 which characterizes the mesophotic coral reef ecosystems at Pulley Ridge and Tortugas. This research is part of a grant funded by the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science award NA11NOS4780045: “Connectivity of the Pulley Ridge - South Florida Coral Reef Ecosystem”. The cruises were a collaboration of the University of Miami, HBOI-CIOERT, NOAA Fisheries, and the UNCW-CIOERT Undersea Vehicles Program.

The purpose of this research cruise was to discover and characterize, for the first time, the extent of mesophotic reefs along the entire coastline of Cuba, and to compare the health and connectivity (physical, genetic and ecological) among both mesophotic and previously well-characterized shallow reef systems in Cuba, the southeastern United States, and Gulf of Mexico (in particular, the FGBNMS and FKNMS). Show moreWhile much has been written about visual literacy and multimodal teaching, almost nothing has been published on preparing instructors and graduate teaching assistants to provide students with the mechanics of visual design, rhetoric, and cultural criticism to help them build complex, multimodal projects that go beyond visual inclusion and critique. This chapter focuses on a graduate course on visual literacy, rhetoric, and design that was taught by one of the authors and taken by the other four. Grounded in previous claims for visual literacy in the field, the authors open by introducing how and why students can be helped to develop visual arguments. It then introduces the graduate course, and 10 strategies for successful multimodal, project-based teaching, which are exemplified by graduate and undergraduate project examples. The chapter concludes with example assignments from two of the graduate authors and a call for a dedicated cross-disciplinary graduate course for multimodal pedagogy.

Show moreThe purpose of the Upper-Level STEM Student Library Use Study was to determine the amount of library instruction received by undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), the information resources they use, and their perceived level of confidence in using library resources. The study also gauged student satisfaction with library services, facilities, and technology with 75% as a goal for overall satisfaction rating. 333 students participated, falling short of the desired sample size, and reached 93% of the number needed to gain a statistically significant sample size of 357. A 20-item survey was administered from November 2016 through March 2017 and gathered standardized student responses to make inferences about the undergraduate STEM student body. Survey results showed that participants were generally satisfied with library services, information sources, and technology since the average satisfaction rating was 59%. This, as well as satisfaction with the building and study spaces, at 52%, fell short of the goal of 75% indicated in the study proposal. Participants expressed more confidence in using the library if they had library instruction sessions although the association was small, according to the results of a correlation test that was employed. Participants were more likely to use the library as a place to study but less likely to use its information resources, and often used search engines to find information for academic purposes. Results of the study recommend improvements to study spaces and in promoting library services. The results also suggest conducting user studies of students in other majors and also faculty to gain a comprehensive view of library use.
