Show moreStyle development in painting is an important aspect in the maturation of the artist. In the propulsive theory, inspiration and critical control dictate the development of the work of art. In the finalistic theory, the final image is cognated in pre-production and dictates the work. Emphasis on style development is necessary in the college art studio. It is the single most important aspect in personal growth and success. Influences on style development include: a consistency in the work, the physical act of painting, media, psychological integration with personal expression, societal or technological stimuli, personality, and originality. A program to foster style development stresses a professional association between student and instructor where roles are defined, and freedom in the studio exists. Students write contracts to determine objectives and projects. Galleries and alternative spaces provide additional areas for expression. The program is complemented by indivualized readings, peer discussions, critiques, and written evaluations.

This study investigated how the biomass production and mineral content of aquacultured S. linearis was affected by harvest frequency during a 10-week period using four different harvest treatments. Under the first treatment (T1) plants received zero intermittent harvests, the second (T2) received harvests every five weeks, the third (T3) received harvests every 3.3 weeks, and the fourth (T4) received harvests every 2.5 weeks. The results indicate that biomass production and mineral content were both strongly affected by harvest treatment. Intermittent harvesting decreased biomass production and conversely, intermittent harvesting increased the quantities of certain desirable minerals in S. linearis. Early harvests of the study plants were small, suggesting that 13-15 weeks after germination is the earliest time a harvestable yield can be achieved from S. linearis.

This construction gives rise to formulas for the multiplicity of an indecomposable in the direct sum decomposition of the pair (A, B). These decomposition numbers form a full set of relative invariant, as requested by Birkhoff.

The main focus of my research was to subject the CHIMERA supernova code to these two hydrodynamic tests. This thesis reviews critical parameters for Current Minors characterization. Six MOS Current Mirror configurations are studied, and their performance characteristics are compared. The proper selection and use of MOSFET models are presented. It is shown that CAD-based design and analysis is indispensable if realistic MOS models such as BSIM3 are used. The CAD based analysis and design employs simulation parameter tuning, optimization and swept parameters. The presented CAD techniques allow a designer to make important tradeoffs for different configurations. One of the main thesis observations is that it is not always necessary to use more involved Current Mirror configurations; a Simple Current Mirror Configuration is often sufficient. The thesis also studies the adverse effects on the design caused by process variations.

In addition, complete transforms of the signal and noise cannot change detectability. Throughout this work we show that "Subspace methods" as defined here can improve detectability in specific subspaces, resulting in improved Receiver Operating Curves (ROC) and thus better detection in arbitrary noise environments. Our method is tested and verified on various signals and noises, both simulated and real. The optimum detection of signals in noise requires the computation of noise eigenvalues and vectors (EVD). This process neither is a trivial one nor is it computationally cheap, especially for non-stationary noise and can result in numerical instabilities when the covariance matrix is large. This work addresses this problem and provides solutions that take advantage of the subspace structure through plane rotations to improve on existing algorithms for EVD by improving their convergence rate and reducing their computational expense for given thresholds.

To find a suitable bottom boundary condition for this LES simulation, several cases were considered with change in drag coefficient property. The effect of variation in the depth of the water column was also considered. Variation in surface deflection of the current, variation of the mass flux and distribution of eddy viscosity with depth of the water column are determined. The cases are compared with the case of a deep water column. Numerical results are also compared with field observations.

Show moreThe developing subsurface structure of a shallow sub-tropical water column during the passage of cold low-pressure atmospheric front is characterized through synoptic and in-situ observations during the passage of three separate fronts over South Florida. Subsurface distribution of current, salinity, temperature, density and dissipation rates were examined using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), ship-based instruments, moored instruments and an Ocean Surface Current Radar (OSCR) as the fronts passed through the region. Airfoil shear probes mounted in a package on the nose of the AUV were used to measure the level and distribution of small-scale turbulence in the water column and to estimate the in-situ dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy. Prevailing meteorological conditions were determined from two NOAA C-MAN stations and, for two of the experiments, from a local Air Sea Interaction Spar buoy (ASIS). The first atmospheric front examined was in December 1998. A significant 10°C drop in air temperature was recorded. The AUV carried out several pre-programmed surveys over a 6-day period. A turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates of O(10-6W/kg) were observed in the water column during the passage of the front. Fetch-limited, offshore, wind-induced surface and subsurface currents were identified during the passage of the front on April 9, 2000. As the winds increased in magnitude and shifted direction, a change in surface current was apparent in the OSCR observations. A bottom-mounted ADCP and an AUV-mounted ADCP both recorded distinct corresponding contributions to the subsurface current due to the winds. Clockwise rotation of the current profile in the water column, consistent with wind-generated currents, was observed. A third low-pressure cold front passed through the region on April 18 an 19, 2000. AUV surveys were carried out as the front passed over the region for 19 hours within a 24-hour period. Dissipation rates reached O(10 -6W/kg) during the period of the survey and decreased to O(10 -8W/kg) subsequently. The distribution of dissipation rate appeared to agree with the characteristic log law for wind-induced turbulence at the start of the passage of the front, but was significantly higher subsequently and more dependent on the combination of convective fluxes and wind stress.
