A turbulent water current induced by winds, through a friction force at the sea surface and subjected to the Coriolis force in shallow water was studied. A Large Eddy Simulation model developed by Zikanov et al. is used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. To define the bottom boundary condition, a drag coefficient parameter, based on the ideas of Csanady, is used to evaluate the shear stress at the bottom. To find a suitable bottom boundary condition for this LES simulation, several cases were considered with change in drag coefficient property. The effect of variation in the depth of the water column was also considered. Variation in surface deflection of the current, variation of the mass flux and distribution of eddy viscosity with depth of the water column are determined. The cases are compared with the case of a deep water column. Numerical results are also compared with field observations.

Show moreThe developing subsurface structure of a shallow sub-tropical water column during the passage of cold low-pressure atmospheric front is characterized through synoptic and in-situ observations during the passage of three separate fronts over South Florida. Subsurface distribution of current, salinity, temperature, density and dissipation rates were examined using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), ship-based instruments, moored instruments and an Ocean Surface Current Radar (OSCR) as the fronts passed through the region. Airfoil shear probes mounted in a package on the nose of the AUV were used to measure the level and distribution of small-scale turbulence in the water column and to estimate the in-situ dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy. Prevailing meteorological conditions were determined from two NOAA C-MAN stations and, for two of the experiments, from a local Air Sea Interaction Spar buoy (ASIS). The first atmospheric front examined was in December 1998. A significant 10°C drop in air temperature was recorded. The AUV carried out several pre-programmed surveys over a 6-day period. A turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates of O(10-6W/kg) were observed in the water column during the passage of the front. Fetch-limited, offshore, wind-induced surface and subsurface currents were identified during the passage of the front on April 9, 2000. As the winds increased in magnitude and shifted direction, a change in surface current was apparent in the OSCR observations. A bottom-mounted ADCP and an AUV-mounted ADCP both recorded distinct corresponding contributions to the subsurface current due to the winds. Clockwise rotation of the current profile in the water column, consistent with wind-generated currents, was observed. A third low-pressure cold front passed through the region on April 18 an 19, 2000. AUV surveys were carried out as the front passed over the region for 19 hours within a 24-hour period. Dissipation rates reached O(10 -6W/kg) during the period of the survey and decreased to O(10 -8W/kg) subsequently. The distribution of dissipation rate appeared to agree with the characteristic log law for wind-induced turbulence at the start of the passage of the front, but was significantly higher subsequently and more dependent on the combination of convective fluxes and wind stress.

The current standards often have limit quantitative reasoning and often exceed the peak demand for parking. The current requirements may seem as a necessary evil to address transportation and consumer habits, but in actuality it is only further facilitating the dependency on the automobile. Modifications to the current standards such as the amount of parking required and the required size of parking spaces will help decrease the amount of land and cost related to parking facilities. Other alternative modes of transportation also need to be invested in to make these options more convenient. The continued support of the automobile through parking regulations will accentuate the effects of urban sprawl and in the end, this is not environmentally or financially feasible.

One hundred years ago, health disciplines had limited therapies for prenatal and neonatal disorders. During this period, the eugenics movement influenced leaders to involuntarily sterilize individuals who were sought to be "unfit" to prevent disorders in offspring. ... One of these contemporary reproductive genetic technologies is the use of ultrasound and serum bio-medical markers for detection of congenital, chromosome, and genetic disorders. When ultrasounds reveal abnormal findings, the perceived perfect pregnancy vanishes and gives way to feelings of shock, disbelief, fear, guilt, loss, and threats to self and their unborn baby. Twelve women who had an abnormal ultrasound were interviewed within the context of their cultural values and beliefs. The method of van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenology illuminated the meaning for these women in their life worlds. ... They endured this experience through their own coping mechanisms, but often felt uncertainty and emotional turmoil until the birth. The women also sought comfort through their cultural values, beliefs, and traditions. In coping with the risks found on this abnormal ultrasound, women often selected silence or blocking perceived threats. With these coping methods, they were alone in their suffering. ... Health providers, in not recognizing these women's misunderstandings and emotional fears, abandoned them in their psychosocial and cultural needs. The significance reveals that nurses and health providers need to infuse human caring ways of being, knowing, and doing within advanced technological environments.

Root hydroponic chambers were used to determine the effects of below-ground exposure to 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 10.0 mM sulfides. T. testudinum ATP, energy charge, photosynthesis and growth responses were determined after 48 h under light saturation. Root ATP, energy charge and adenylate ratios were all significantly reduced (P < 0.05) when exposed to 2.0-10.0 mM sulfides. Leaf elongation rates declined by an average of 43% in the 2.0-6.0 mM treatments and 63% in the 10.0 mM treatment. Although root energy charge, ATP production and leaf elongation rates declined after sulfide exposure, concentrations up to 10.0 mM failed to produce visual signs of sulfide toxicity or mortality. Photosynthesis and leaf EC remained high after sulfide treatments, suggesting a resilience of T. testudinum to short-term sulfide exposure.

Show moreCurrently, there is a great deal of interest in the role of sulfur in the seagrass ecosystems and for sulfide, a known phytotoxin, in particular. This research used a 35S tracer technique to examine sulfur metabolism in the seagrass Thalassia testudinum. The uptake of the 35S radiotracer was documented at similar rates under both oxic and anoxic treatments. The highest total radioactivity was in root and rhizome tissue, as compared to the leaves. 35S translocation from roots to leaves was found to be more efficient in young versus mature leaves. Total sulfur uptake was estimated and found to be significantly different between root and rhizome tissue under oxic conditions. In the anoxic treatment, 1 mM sulfide may have been a threshold, at which the seagrass showed reduced uptake of 35S into the below-ground tissue. While the plants assisted in the production of sulfide in this experiment, sulfide accumulation may inhibit 35S uptake. This is counter to the idea of increased sulfide intrusion under sediment hypoxia. This study represents the first attempt to use 35S to trace sulfur incorporation into seagrass; further research will be required to understand the complex sulfur biochemistry of these important marine plants using this method.
