- Spontaneous pattern changes for bistable apparent motion stimuli: Perceptual satiation or memory attraction?.

Show moreSubjects judge motion direction for an apparent motion stimulus with competing perceptual organizations: Vertical vs. horizontal motion. The two patterns are coupled. When one is perceptually instantiated the other remains active in memory, resulting in sudden changes in perceived motion direction under constant stimulus conditions. The probability of change from an initially horizontal to a vertical pattern remains constant over time, showing that perceptual satiation is insufficient to explain the occurrence of spontaneous perceptual changes. It is proposed that spontaneous changes also occur because the pattern active in memory attracts the percept away from the currently instantiated pattern. The attraction hypothesis specifies that the activation of the memory pattern (and hence its attractive strength) increases as a result of previous experience. It is supported by evidence that the likelihood of changing, say from horizontal to vertical motion, is increased if the motion pattern was previously vertical.

- Sports and its effects on gender typing.

- Abstract/Description

Sports and its effects on children have been researched for the benefits that it may bring. The purpose of this study is to see if sports competency, assessed by both peer reports and self-reports, benefits both boys and girls and whether it protects children who generally are gender-atypical from adjustment difficulties and also to see if there are any interactive influences of cross-gender typing and sports competency on self-esteem, depression, and other adjustment indexes. Show moreSports and its effects on children have been researched for the benefits that it may bring. Our results found that there was a significant interaction between sports competence and cross-gender typing when looking at popularity and also a significant interaction between sports self-efficacy and cross-gender typing when looking at self-esteem. Our data did not provide sufficient support for our buffering hypothesis, but it allowed for us to conclude that self-esteem of low-cross-gender-typed children profit more from high sports self-efficacy and suffer more from low sports self-efficacy than the self-esteem of high-cross-gender-typed children.

Show moreThe sovereignty of the Spratly Islands has been disputed since the early 1900's. Since the 1970's, the dispute has taken on greater significance in world politics due to the possibility of oil reserves. The fact that China has become the regional hegemon in Southeast Asia has made the dispute more important. If China takes over the archipelago, world politics would be altered as China would in effect turn the South China Sea into a Chinese Lake. There have been many resolutions proposed in order to eliminate the conflict. However, most authors have focused on peaceful resolutions such as joint development or arbitration. The problem is that the relations between the claimants is not conducive to these resolutions. The establishment of a security community known as military prevention is one solution that has not been explored. It is a resolution to the conflict that would include demilitarization. It is this option that appears to be likely in lieu of the tensions in the region.

Anochetus mayri is a widespread New World species, ranging from South and Central America and the West Indies, north to Florida and the Bahamas. The northernmost published record of A. mayri came from the Pine Jog Environmental Learning Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, collected in 2002 in pine and oak litter samples. I examined whether A. mayri was also present in surrounding areas with similar environmental conditions. I found A. mayri in pine litter at other sites in Palm Beach County, but I did not find this species in similar habitats in Lee County. Additional unpublished records indicate that A. mayri is widespread in deep pine litter in Florida north to Indian River County and West to Highlands County.

- Abstract/Description
-
The brown basilisk, Basiliscus vittatus, is large lizard native to coastal lowlands from central Mexico to Ecuador. In 1976, this species was first discovered in southern Florida, and it has been spreading since. My thesis documents the spread of B. vittatus through southern Florida using published and unpublished records. I mapped a total of 545 records of B. vittatus in Florida: 73 from published records, 15 from my own observations, and 457 from photographs uploaded to iNaturalist....

Published reports of B. vittatus have been reported from 11 Florida counties (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Monroe, Collier, Lee, Hendry, and Manatee). In addition, there have been additional unpublished photographic records uploaded to iNaturalist from two more counties (Pinellas and Brevard). These additions expand the known northern range of B. vittatus on both the East and West coasts of Florida.
