The optical properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Zn1-x MnxS have been studied by using photoluminescence emission, lifetime and excitation spectroscopies. In photoluminescence spectroscopy three bands were found peaking at 585 nm (yellow band), 650 nm (orange band) and 750 nm (red band). For the yellow and red bands the peak position changes little with Mn concentration. For the orange band the peak energy decreases with increasing Mn concentration. The lifetimes of the yellow,...
Show moreThe optical properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Zn1-x MnxS have been studied by using photoluminescence emission, lifetime and excitation spectroscopies. In photoluminescence spectroscopy three bands were found peaking at 585 nm (yellow band), 650 nm (orange band) and 750 nm (red band). For the yellow and red bands the peak position changes little with Mn concentration. For the orange band the peak energy decreases with increasing Mn concentration. The lifetimes of the yellow, orange and red bands were found to be about 70, 50 and 7 mus. The results of the lifetime measurements support the assumption that there is energy transfer from the yellow to the red band through radiationless transitions. In the excitation spectroscopy of the yellow band four peaks were found peaking near 526, 487, 461 and 426 nm. These four bands have been ascribed to transitions from the four lowest excited states of Mn ++ to the ground state. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)

A group-theoretical analysis of the characteristic lattice vibrational modes for ZnWO4 single crystals is given. The mode assignments have been made. The temperature dependence of the Raman spectra has been obtained experimentally in various polarization geometries. Anharmonic contributions and interactions between phonons are discussed. Photoluminescence studies of ZnWO4 (colored, color-free), ZnWO4: Nb and ZnWO4:Sb have been carried out in the temperature range from 11 to 430 K. All samples show the blue emission band. An IR emission band with a zero-phonon line (ZPL) has been found in ZnWO4 colored samples only. The lineshape function of the emission bands has been theoretically studied and compared with the experimental results. Radiative, non-radiative and multiphonon transitions have been investigated in the thermal quenching model. The temperature dependences of the intensity, the frequency and the linewidth of the ZPL have been studied. Using the Single Configurational Coordinate model, the linear coupling between electrons and phonons has been analyzed. The quadratic coupling of electrons and phonons has been studied in the Debye approximation. The coupling of electronic transitions to normal vibrational modes, pseudo-localized vibrational modes and localized modes is also discussed.

This study indicated that load interaction effects are negligible in the present experiments. However, frequency, weld geometry and cathodic protection significantly effect fatigue life.

We propose that if this is not the case the volatility is due to a bubble. Hence, this is the general hypothesis from which several testable hypotheses are developed. A key issue in bubble research is the definition of fundamentals. In this work we assume that, in the long-run, operating revenues are the only source from which any payments can be made, including dividend payments. Therefore, if expectations are formulated correctly, on average, there has to be a relationship between changes in prices and changes in corporate revenues. Thus, we use different accounting variables as proxies for fundamentals. In addition, since the literature points to contagion of opinion as one of the causes for the creation of bubbles, we also examine the contemporaneous relationship between prices and several proxies for herding behavior. OLS, panel data analysis, and quantile regression are used to analyze the contemporaneous relationship between prices and fundamentals or contagion proxies; while cointegration (reconciled to be used with panel data) and the Bonferroni inequality are used to investigate the long-run equilibrium between prices and fundamentals. The results indicate that, overall, company earnings are not explanatory of prices. These findings hold both in the short-run and in the long-run equilibrium scenarios. In addition, we find that investors do not reward an increase of the debt in the capital structure of corporations. In reference to our contagion variables, changes in money flow, volume, and volatility are found explanatory of changes in prices. Nevertheless, the effect of these variables is not homogeneous across price changes. Specifically, Money Flow is significant across all quantiles except for the 30% lowest price changes, Volume is explanatory of the 35% highest price changes, while volatility is explanatory across all the distribution of price changes. An interesting observation is that the three independent variables become increasingly explanatory as we move up to higher quantiles. Taken together our findings are supportive of the bubble and contagion hypotheses.

Show moreThis dissertation examines the role of speech inflection in the composition of melodies of American musical theatre and investigates how composers approached speech inflection in their work throughout this genre's history. Through analysis of songs and interviews with composers, this dissertation investigates the relevance of speech inflection in the various styles of composition existing on Broadway. The main focus of musical theatre compositions, especially post Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical Oklahoma, is to move the plot along through songs. Therefore, the delivery of the text must be of ultimate consideration in the writing of modern musicals. A well-written speech-melody facilitates the process of a speech-melody-interpretation, which will result in the delivery of lyrics with an understandable, natural sounding quality. This investigation happens through a chronologic evaluation of the relevance of speech inflection during each of the distinct phases on Broadway, as well as an examination of the approach to writing with a speech-melody focus of each individual composer throughout history. This study explores the importance of speech inflection in American musical theatre songwriting focusing on a speech-melody approach to composition.
