Show moreThe Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Optical Line Scan (OLS) instruments collect data from an altitude of approximately 830km above the surface of the Earth. The night light data from these instruments has been shown to correlate by lit area with national level Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and to correlate with GDP at the State level by total radiance value. Very strong correlation is found between the night light data at a new, larger scale, the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) within the state of Florida. Additional statistical analysis was performed to determine which industries within each MSA explain the greatest amount of variance in the night light data. Industrial variables exhibited strong multi-collinearity. It is therefore impossible to determine which industries explain the greatest variance in the night light image data.

These criteria are assigned discrete numerical values which are programmed into Statistical Program for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The use of statistical analyses can determine if there is a correlation between environmental and cultural variables, and whether these variables in marginal climatic conditions exert enough pressure to affect interpopulation relationships that would result in the formation of xenophobic reactions such as hostility or warfare.

Show moreAirwakes are shed behind the ship’s superstructure and represent a highly turbulent and rapidly distorting flow field. This flow field severely affects pilot’s workload and such helicopter shipboard operations. It requires both the one-point statistics of autospectrum and the two-point statistics of coherence (normalized cross-spectrum) for a relatively complete description. Recent advances primarily refer to generating databases of flow velocity points through experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) investigations, numerically computing autospectra along with a few cases of cross-spectra and coherences, and developing a framework for extracting interpretive models of autospectra in closed form from a database along with an application of this framework to study the downwash effects. By comparison, relatively little is known about coherences. In fact, even the basic expressions of cross-spectra and coherences for three components of homogeneous isotropic turbulence (HIT) vary from one study to the other, and the related literature is scattered and piecemeal. Accordingly, this dissertation begins with a unified account of all the cross-spectra and coherences of HIT from first principles. Then, it presents a framework for constructing interpretive coherence models of airwake from a database on the basis of perturbation theory. For each velocity component, the coherence is represented by a separate perturbation series in which the basis function or the first term on the right-hand side of the series is represented by the corresponding coherence for HIT. The perturbation series coefficients are evaluated by satisfying the theoretical constraints and fitting a curve in a least squares sense on a set of numerically generated coherence points from a database. Although not tested against a specific database, the framework has a mathematical basis. Moreover, for assumed values of perturbation series constants, coherence results are presented to demonstrate how coherences of airwakes and such flow fields compare to those of HIT.

Show moreThe study of the reusable container inventory control in a distribution network is crucial to the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the transportation systems. In order to minimize the total operation cost of such a transportation network system, all subsystems of the distribution network have to be optimized together as a whole system. In this study, we extended the inventory control concept and developed a multiple-inventory control model for the transportation network. We presented a systematic approach to address all those subsystems as interrelated systems. Mathematical models were developed for the transportation and container inventory control problems first. Then, the statistical modeling method was used to analyze the effects of the container inventory management policies on the performance of the transportation system. Based on the optimization theory, simulation executions were such arranged to lead to the globe optimality. This makes it possible to optimize the variables of inventory control under different control policies without solving mathematical models. A Simulation Code Generator (SCG) was also developed for a general container inventory control system.

Show moreThree new approaches to the clustering of data sets are presented. They are heuristic methods and represent forms of unsupervised (non-parametric) clustering. Applied to an unknown set of data these methods automatically determine the number of clusters and their location using no a priori assumptions. All are based on analogies with different physical phenomena. The first technique, named the Percolation Clustering Algorithm, embodies a novel variation on the nearest-neighbor algorithm focusing on the connectivity between sample points. Exploiting the equivalence with a percolation process, this algorithm considers data points to be surrounded by expanding hyperspheres, which bond when they touch each other. Once a sequence of joined spheres spans an entire cluster, percolation occurs and the cluster size remains constant until it merges with a neighboring cluster. The second procedure, named Nucleation and Growth Clustering, exploits the analogy with nucleation and growth which occurs in island formation during epitaxial growth of solids. The original data points are nucleation centers, around which aggregation will occur. Additional "ad-data" that are introduced into the sample space, interact with the data points and stick if located within a threshold distance. These "ad-data" are used as a tool to facilitate the detection of clusters. The third method, named Discrete Deposition Clustering Algorithm, constrains deposition to occur on a grid, which has the advantage of computational efficiency as opposed to the continuous deposition used in the previous method. The original data form the vertexes of a sparse graph and the deposition sites are defined to be the middle points of this graphs edges. Ad-data are introduced on the deposition site and the system is allowed to evolve in a self-organizing regime. This allows the simulation of a phase transition and by monitoring the specific heat capacity of the system one can mark out a "natural" criterion for validating the partition. All of these techniques are competitive with existing algorithms and offer possible advantages for certain types of data distributions. A practical application is presented using the Percolation Clustering Algorithm to determine the taxonomy of the Dow Jones Industrial Average portfolio. The statistical properties of the correlation coefficients between DJIA components are studied along with the eigenvalues of the correlation matrix between the DJIA components.

Show moreGenetic algorithms (GA) and clustering techniques are used to study and classify materials. An analysis of the convergence speed of GA is carried out using advanced probability theory and random walk concepts. The determination of the ground-state of multicomponent alloys and Ising models with long-range interactions is accomplished using a genetic algorithm. A new GA operator, the domain-flip, is introduced and its efficiency is compared to that of traditional GA operators, crossover and mutation. The domain-flip operator destroys phase-boundaries by flipping all bits of a given domain at the same time. This operator turns out to be crucial in extracting the system from low local minima. Therefore its presence is rather essential to speed up the GA convergence. A study of GA convergence in its last stages, where all chromosomes present in the population are assumed to consist of two well-ordered domains, is performed using random walk theory and probability theory. Exact expressions for the average time needed for at least one chromosome to find the ground-state are derived. Also, the probability for two chromosomes to undergo a successful crossover, meaning the result is the ground-state, are given. Finally, clustering techniques, which belong to the field of Data Mining, are applied to the classification of materials. An improved version of the widely-used clustering algorithm, K-means, is developed. A comparison of the two clustering techniques on a two-dimensional data set shows that the guide-point approach is more powerful than the K-means algorithm. The guide-point algorithm is used successfully to partition a materials data set. This clustering results in extracting useful information from the data set for which no a priori knowledge was assumed.

Show moreAfter the sequencing of many complete genomes, we are in a post-genomic era in which the most important task has changed from gathering genetic information to organizing the mass of data as well as under standing how components interact with each other. The former is usually undertaking using bioinformatics methods, while the latter task is generally termed proteomics. Success in both parts demands correct statistical significance assignments for results found. In my dissertation. I study two concrete examples: global sequence alignment statistics and peptide sequencing/identification using mass spectrometry. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (HPLC/MS/MS), enabling peptide identifications and thus protein identifications, has become the tool of choice in large-scale proteomics experiments. Peptide identification is usually done by database searches methods. The lack of robust statistical significance assignment among current methods motivated the development of a novel de novo algorithm, RAId, whose score statistics then provide statistical significance for high scoring peptides found in our custom, enzyme-digested peptide library. The ease of incorporating post-translation modifications is another important feature of RAId. To organize the massive protein/DNA data accumulated, biologists often cluster proteins according to their similarity via tools such as sequence alignment. Homologous proteins share similar domains. To assess the similarity of two domains usually requires alignment from head to toe, ie. a global alignment. A good alignment score statistics with an appropriate null model enable us to distinguish the biologically meaningful similarity from chance similarity. There has been much progress in local alignment statistics, which characterize score statistics when alignments tend to appear as a short segment of the whole sequence. For global alignment, which is useful in domain alignment, there is still much room for exploration/improvement. Here we present a variant of the direct polymer problem in random media (DPRM) to study the score distribution of global alignment. We have demonstrate that upon proper transformation the score statistics can be characterized by Tracy-Widom distributions, which correspond to the distributions for the largest eigenvalue of various ensembles of random matrices.

Preservation of site and regional statistics represents a means of assessing the validity of missing precipitation estimates at a site. This study evaluates the efficacy of traditional interpolation methods for estimation of missing data in preserving site and regional statistics. New optimal spatial interpolation methods intended to preserve these statistics are also proposed and evaluated in this study. Rain gauge sites in the state of Kentucky are used as a case study, and several error and performance measures are used to evaluate the trade-offs in accuracy of estimation and preservation of site and regional statistics.

Show moreThis study is a descriptive analysis of a population of public secondary school administrators in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Southern Association is composed of eleven states in the southeast region of the United States and presently consists of 2,939 schools. The purpose of the study was to reveal practices which school administrators may follow to improve the management of extracurricular activities in the schools which they administer. The author determined the present status of activities in the schools of The Southern Association with regard to 25 validated principles of management gleaned from the literature. The information collected in 1944 by J. Lloyd Trump in a similar study of the North Central Association was updated and the two studies were compared to determine the differences in the data of 1944 and 1975. The instrument was returned by the administrators in 334 schools in the Southern Association. Practices revealed in the study were evaluated in relation to the 25 principles of management and compared to the data given in the report of 1944. The following conclusions are stated: 1. There is not as much need for precise definition of the place and function of extracurricular activities as there was 30 years ago but some need remains. The place and the function of activities is well defined and accepted in most schools . 2. There is still a need for increased concern over the management of the extracurricular program. The management of finances shows the greatest improvement. Some gain is shown in other areas as well. 3. There is continuing need for frequent evaluation and follow-up in the entire extracurricular program. There has been significant improvement in this area but much more needs to be done. The management of extracurricular activities continues to be a major concern of the public high schools of today. Increased understanding of successful strategies in management will enable administrators to improve the effectiveness of the extracurricular activities program.

Show morePurpose. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the status of substitute teacher program services in selected counties in South Florida. The evidence from the investigation was then used in the development of a model of desirable characteristics for substitute teacher programs to improve the selection, placement, training, and evaluation of substitute teachers in the districts investigated. Specific questions to be answered were the following: (1) What are the current practices and procedures for the selection, placement, training, and evaluation of substitute teachers in selected counties in South Florida? (2) What alternatives can be developed for a model program to improve the selection, placement, training, and evaluation of substitute teachers in selected counties in South Florida? Procedure. This study was limited to the three school districts of Broward, Martin, and Palm Beach, located on the southeast coast of Florida. These three school districts represented small, moderately large, and large school districts in South Florida. Four surveys were developed for this study. The four surveys were designed to obtain information and perceptions from the four district groups that deal with substitute teachers: (1) the district office, (2) principals, (3) teachers, and (4) substitute teachers. The instruments dealt basically with the four areas of substitute teacher services: (1) selection, (2) placement, (3) training or orientation, and (4) evaluation. Conclusions and Recommendations. Although selection procedures and placement procedures were rated as "satisfactory" or above by the vast majority of principal, teacher, and substitute teacher respondents in all three school districts, there was still need for improvement in these substitute teacher services. Orientation procedures and evaluation procedures were areas of concern of principal, teacher, and substitute teacher respondents in all three school districts. These areas of substitute teacher services need to be improved to meet the needs of principals, teachers, and substitute teachers. In summary, substitute teachers make a valuable contribution to the continuity of the educational program. It is the responsibility of the administration to provide the best possible substitute teacher service to assure the success of the educational program when the regular teacher is absent.

Show moreThe primary purpose of this study was to find the status of the substitute teacher delivery system in the sixty-seven school districts in the State of Florida. The use of substitute teachers by Florida school districts has increased each year in alignment with the national trends found in the professional literature. Since July 1990, Florida law requires no academic preparation or teacher training before beginning work as a substitute teacher. The 67 Florida School Districts now issue substitute teacher certificates with the only Florida law requirement being fingerprints prior to employment. Substitute teacher delivery system identifies the preparation, selection, training, support, and evaluation of substitute teachers in a school district. Issues related to substitute teachers were substitute teacher pay, substitute teacher credentials, and substitute teacher training. The corollary purpose of this study was to compare the perceptions of selected administrators, teachers, and substitute teachers concerning the Polk County Schools substitute teacher delivery system, one of Florida's sixty-seven school districts. A review of the literature provides a national summary of teacher pay, substitute teacher role, substitute teacher status, and administrative procedures used to recruit, select, place, orient, and train substitute teachers. The analysis of data from the 1993-94 state survey provides the teachers per substitute teacher ratio, students per substitute teacher ratio, and state average of these values. In addition, the percentage of the total budgets used for substitute teacher pay is calculated. Daily pay rates and academic requirements for short-term and long-term substitute teachers were collected and state average values calculated. Seven research questions concerning the substitute teacher delivery system are answered. The district perception instrument was conducted in Polk County School District at 20 schools using a stratified random sample and analyzed with the chi-square analysis technique. Seven null hypotheses were rejected using the significance level of chi-square value indicating significant differences in perception in the survey participants; school-based administrators, teachers, and substitute teachers. The combination of the state survey results and district perception instrument can be used to assist a district in developing an action plan for improving a district's substitute teacher delivery system.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to determine the levels of voluntary compliance with Florida's Raise Achievement in Secondary Education (RAISE) requirements and other quality variables by nonpublic high schools in five geographical regions. A population of 137 nonpublic schools with 40 or more students were divided into three school categories: Catholic, religious affiliated (non-Catholic), and non-religious. The data were organized into 24 selected items taken from a questionnaire to determine the status of teacher certification, school accreditation, courses and credits required for graduation, length of class periods, enrollment, and availability of science laboratories. The data obtained determined the level of voluntary compliance with Florida's RAISE requirements and other quality variables, the eligibility of nonpublic schools graduating seniors seeking admission to Florida public universities and the Florida Academic Scholar Program. Items of concern were cross tabulated for frequencies and percentages in the three school categories and within each of the five geographical regions. It was concluded that there was a 76.5% compliance with RAISE requirements by nonpublic high schools. Eighty-eight percent of the Catholic schools, 71% of the religious affiliated schools, and 75% of nonreligious schools complied with RAISE requirements. Therefore, graduating seniors would have the courses in the curriculum required for entrance to Florida public universities. The nonpublic high schools (75.3%), however, fell short of meeting the requirements for the Florida Academic Scholar Program. This deficiency was due to a lack of advanced courses or not enough extra credits offered to students. The data also showed that 53% of the nonpublic school teachers hold Florida professional certificates and that schools accredited by major accrediting agencies were more often in full compliance with RAISE requirements. A lack of response by nonreligious schools indicated that they had no interest in the study or were not willing to share information and, therefore, the findings were not conclusive. The study did, however, indicate that the RAISE requirements have had an impact on nonpublic high schools who have begun to implement more fine arts and life skills into their curriculum and add additional class periods.

Ethnographic fieldwork, questionnaires and interviews provided insight into a variety of experiences. The individual nature of the sport is reflected by a participant's decision to display status markers. Car signs (e.g., bumper stickers and license plate frames) are displayed by a quarter of race participants. They come in a variety of forms allowing the car's driver to communicate with triathletes and non-triathletes while driving on the road. The most prestigious triathlon is the Ironman. The M Dot Ironman logo appears as a decal on vehicles and as a mark of permanence on the body. Tattoos act as a formal communication system in a similar manner to car signs. Triathletes display status symbols to garner respect from their peers and separate themselves from the larger society.

For these two cases solutions were obtained for total optical thicknesses of 0.2, 2, and 20. When the Compton scattering rates of the two energy groups are allowed to be different, the transport equation becomes nonlinear due to the exclusion principle. For this case a numerical scheme was developed which yielded solutions for slabs having optical thicknesses up to unity.

A growing anxiety that the influence and power of New England traditions would diminish as the nation moved westward resulted in a shared discourse between religious reformers and influential leaders of Cleveland, Ohio. Their language ascribed the symbolism of Jack Tar as essential for maintaining cultural hegemony. This thesis examines how this power struggle transpired at the intersection of race, class and geopolitical rivalry, altering the depiction of Jack Tar to Steamboat Jack.
