Show moreThe fish communities of two seagrass habitats near Jupiter Inlet, Florida, were studied from April 1981 to March 1982 to determine species composition, abundance, richness and occurrence. Monthly collections yielded a total of 23,156 specimens representing 47 families and 146 species. Both sites were numerically dominated by Lagodon rhomboides, Eucinostomus gula, and E. argenteus, which (combined) comprised 63% of the total catch. The presence of young lutjanids, haemulids, serranids and sphyraenids indicates the role of this area as a nursery ground. Temporal patterns in species composition and abundance were examined through numerical classification. Species composition was more consistent over time than were corresponding abundances. Despite their proximity, the two sites exhibited differences in species composition and abundance. The role of biological, physical and historical factors are discussed in relation to the observed community patterns.

The nodules have mining value and commercial recovery is expected in the near future. As present techniques for the detection and evaluation of ferromanganese nodule deposits are cumbersome and time consuming, an investigation of the specific acoustic impedance of the nodules is conducted in an effort to determine the feasibility of surveying ferromanganese nodule deposits via side-scan sonar techniques. An acoustic transmission line (impedance tube) is utilized to investigate the specific acoustic impedance of the ferromanganese nodule samples. The accuracy of the experimental technique is evaluated using a steel reference cylinder. Results of the tests (on the ferromanganese samples) indicate that the specific acoustic impedance of a typical ferromanganese nodule sample is 2.07 +- .15 x 106 Rayls. Suggestions for future investigations are also presented.

Show moreIn order for memory questions to accomplish the goals of questions, teachers need to determine specific content and cognitive goals for each question so that questions can direct learners' attention and reinforce an organizational structure for the encoding of information. The purpose of this study was to examine the language used in memory questions for assessment purposes and to examine whether different language options used when formulating memory questions engaged brain areas related to memory and cognition. The language of the questions can affect the cognitive process by which the answer is derived. The two language options that affect cognitive processes are non-specific and specific. This study supplements teachers' working knowledge of the methods and techniques for questioning by providing a basic understanding of cognitive processes that different questions can evoke. This study used techniques from neuroscience to test hypotheses derived directly from education-based theories of cognition in order to validate educational theory. Neuroscience provides knowledge about how the brain senses, processes, stores, and retrieves information. It also provides findings that can be translated into practical applications for the classroom. Therefore, the relationship between education and neuroscience contributes to effective planning, practices, and assessment; it allows a more comprehensive understanding of the difficulties and apprehensions associated with learning. The following study utilized fMRI to answer the general question of the relationship between the memory processes associated with specific and non-specific questions. Seventeen undergraduate and graduate students from a university in South Florida served as subjects. Subjects were presented with a stimulus consisting of specific questions, non-specific questions, and control statements. All questions/statements followed the design of 8 seconds to read the question/statement, 10 seconds to "think" about the answer to the question or the material presented in the statement, 4 seconds for response using a "yes" or "no" button, and a 12 second rest period. Images collected were analyzed using AFNI. Specific cognitive operations improved efficiency for the retrieval of information from memory. Results elucidate differences in neural activity associated with encoding processes and the retrieval of information from memory based on the language used in specific and non-specific questions.

SDA and growth in hatchling sea turtles is of special interest because they experience drastic changes in diet, oxygen availability and habitat during the first several months of life. This study investigated SDA variation between species and among age groups. SDA was quantified in two species of sea turtle (Chelonia mydas, Caretta caretta) at 7, 30, 60, & 90 days post-hatching. Turtles were fed a known amount of food, and oxygen consumption was monitored using a metabolic chamber. SDA percentage of total energy did not increase with age (species pooled), although magnitude of SDA was higher in C. mydas when compared to C. caretta (ages pooled). These results imply that SDA does not increase proportionally with age, and that hatchling C. mydas use more absolute energy for SDA than C. caretta .

Show moreThe educational reforms of the last two decades have placed an increased demand on accountability and refocused efforts toward maximum achievement for all students, including those with disabilities. The goals of such reforms are that no child is left behind in achieving high standards. Under these reforms, exceptional education students who seek to earn a standard high school diploma are being held to the same standards as regular education students. This study provides information on the achievement of students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) in the standard diploma program in the Broward County School system. Students included in this study, were in the 10th grade during the 2003-2004 school year and were administered the 10th grade Sunshine State Standards (SSS) FLAT. They also were enrolled in the standard diploma program and had been diagnosed with a Specific Learning Disability. In addition, enrollment in the Broward County School system for a minimum of seven consecutive years was mandatory along with having FCAT SSS scores in both reading and math for three consecutive years. A sample of all of the students (N=278) that met the specified criteria was utilized. To investigate the relationship among the variables---achievement, ESE services, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and gender---correlations, descriptive statistics, and regressions were used. Some of the findings were that students have a higher pass rate on the math achievement test (57 percent passed) than they do on the reading achievement test (32 percent passed). However, Black, Hispanic, and White students did not benefit equally from ESE services. Further, a statistically significant moderate correlational relationship exists between FCAT reading and FCAT math scores. This research explained less than a quarter of the variation in the achievement levels analyzed; therefore, further longitudinal research is needed to continue to evaluate the effectiveness of special education programs.

This thesis tests whether a simple income-expenditure model is a better predictor of induced expenditure and thus income than a simple quantity theory model. A spectral analysis was performed using alternative definitions of money, income and expenditure. From the results of cross spectral analysis, it was concluded that the money supply is the better predictor of short run (8 months - 3 years) fluctuations in consumption and thus in income.

Data was converted into response per incident photon and per absorbed photon, using photoionization cross-section data measured on the same group of crystals. The response per absorbed photon is approximately constant over the studied spectral range for most crystals, with no visible evidence of an oscillatory component. The data was Fourier analyzed in order to emphasize any latent periodicity in the photo-response. A weak periodic component at 10 meV intervals was found and tentatively associated with localized phonon modes.

Show moreA motion compensated ADV system was evaluated to determine its ability to make measurements necessary for characterizing the variability of the ambient current in the Gulf Stream. The impact of IMU error relative to predicted turbulence spectra was quantified, as well as and the ability of the motion compensation approach to remove sensor motion from the ADV measurements. The presented data processing techniques are shown to allow the evaluated ADV to be effectively utilized for quantifying ambient current fluctuations from 0.02 to 1 Hz (50 to 1 seconds) for dissipation rates as low as 3x10-7. This measurement range is limited on the low frequency end by IMU error, primarily by the calculated transformation matrix, and on the high end by Doppler noise. Inshore testing has revealed a 0.37 Hz oscillation inherent in the towfish designed and manufactured as part of this project, which can nearly be removed using the IMU.

Show moreThe goal of a speech enhancement algorithm is to remove noise and recover the original signal with as little distortion and residual noise as possible. Most successful real-time algorithms thereof have done in the frequency domain where the frequency amplitude of clean speech is estimated per short-time frame of the noisy signal. The state of-the-art short-time spectral amplitude estimator algorithms estimate the clean spectral amplitude in terms of the power spectral density (PSD) function of the noisy signal. The PSD has to be computed from a large ensemble of signal realizations. However, in practice, it may only be estimated from a finite-length sample of a single realization of the signal. Estimation errors introduced by these limitations deviate the solution from the optimal. Various spectral estimation techniques, many with added spectral smoothing, have been investigated for decades to reduce the estimation errors. These algorithms do not address significantly issue on quality of speech as perceived by a human. This dissertation presents analysis and techniques that offer spectral refinements toward speech enhancement. We present an analytical framework of the effect of spectral estimate variance on the performance of speech enhancement. We use the variance quality factor (VQF) as a quantitative measure of estimated spectra. We show that reducing the spectral estimator VQF reduces significantly the VQF of the enhanced speech. The Autoregressive Multitaper (ARMT) spectral estimate is proposed as a low VQF spectral estimator for use in speech enhancement algorithms. An innovative method of incorporating a speech production model using multiband excitation is also presented as a technique to emphasize the harmonic components of the glottal speech input., The preconditioning of the noisy estimates by exploiting other avenues of information, such as pitch estimation and the speech production model, effectively increases the localized narrow-band signal-to noise ratio (SNR) of the noisy signal, which is subsequently denoised by the amplitude gain. Combined with voicing structure enhancement, the ARMT spectral estimate delivers enhanced speech with sound clarity desirable to human listeners. The resulting improvements in enhanced speech are observed to be significant with both Objective and Subjective measurement.

Cyclic oligomers are preferred over chains for larger condensation products. Theoretical vibrational frequencies were obtained for these model compounds as well.
