Show moreThe canal system of South Florida has become a new distributive focus for the invasive Lionfish (Pterois volitans). Lionfish are considered a pest here, having up to 18 venomous spines that can inflict pain if stepped on or handled. These fish also eat a variety of juvenile species affecting the commercial and recreational fishing industry. The canal system in south Florida is also a center for recreational activities. Water land cover information will aid in species removal by offering species information to areas with a high percent of water land cover and who are more likely to come into contact with Lionfish. This research, comparing classification techniques to map water land cover, is the first step to mitigate the stronghold the lionfish have in South Florida. Once mapped, species information can then be distributed to residents that have close proximity to danger zones.

In his acclaimed 2000 novel, The Feast of the Goat, Nobel laureate, Mario Vargas Llosa, a Peruvian who has written about Latin American dictators, creates Urania Cabral, a 49-year-old émigrée who at 14 left her nation after becoming Trujillo’s sexual victim. The novel, told from many perspectives, focuses on her return, the dictator’s last day, and the story of the four conspirators waiting to ambush the presidential bullet-proof car on that fateful night of May 30th 1961. My study analyzes the complex narrative structures (Bakhtin’s heteroglossia) of the novel as masterful “rupturing” techniques. Through these, the reader pieces together the broken body politic of a traumatized nation as Urania reconstructs in painful detail how the impotent dictator digitally rapes her to ensure her body bears the mark of his brutal anger and frustration.

By using digital humanities methods such as network analysis it is possible to better understand and articulate the history and growth of personality psychology.

Microbes respond quicker to changing environments and could provide an early warning of the loss of resiliency of the Florida coastline ecosystem. For 10 weeks, soil samples from Biscayne National Park will be placed in standardized mesocosms and subject to local conditions like sunlight, tides, plants, increased sea levels, higher salinities, and variant inundation. Standard and variant conditions will be employed on different mesocosms, and weekly DNA extractions of the various soil samples will be analyzed via metagenomic analysis, creating a library of the 16S rRNA community structure over the 10 week period.

After correctly entering their username and password, users need to acknowledge a phone call, text message, or an app notification on their smartphone before they can gain access to their account. Two-factor authentication is the most common form of MFA and requires the use of two of the three authentication factors: Something only the user knows, something the user has, and something only the user is. In this work we will analyze some varieties, do UML models of their structure and dynamics, and compare MFA to other authentication approaches.

In addition to creating computer codes to process such signals, one expected outcome of this research project is a series of tutorials exploring Biomedical concepts and digital signal processing algorithms. The use of rapid in-situ hybridization (such as the RNAscope assay) has allowed us to use paraformaldehyde prefixed brain tissue sections, which are more widely available and easier to use, instead of fresh frozen tissue. Here we describe the results from the use of the RNAscope assay to measure the amount of dapB (a bacterial gene), ppiB (a eukaryotic housekeeping gene), and htr2a (a eukaryotic gene coding for 5-HT2A receptors) mRNA.

For this research, I conducted a literature review that examines the benefits and limitations of DACA, the emotional and mental effects of being an “illegal” immigrant, and the political views of members of the current U.S. administration that will threaten the lives of many. Finally, I propose a possible research project to further explore this issue.

Our study explores practical implementations of biometrics, especially its projected growth in the field of mobile transactions. Our study supports the claim that usage of biometric systems, especially in the authentication of mobile transactions, will significantly increase despite security and privacy breaches. Because biometrics is a relatively new technology with little previous data, we circumvent this issue by correlating its usage to that of smart phones in order to analyze statistics to create regression analyses. According to our findings, the number of biometric users will increase from $7.72 billion in 2014 to $10.26 billion in 2019, thus it would be prudent to invest in biometrics by implementing more systems, and creating more reliable systems based on new standards.

The advantages of introducing a web-based learning system into PLTL discussion sessions are (1) providing “hints,” (2) offering multiple attempts per question, and (3) instant grading and feedback. Therefore, our study sought to investigate PTX3 plasma response to maximal exercise in obese and normal-weight subjects, and its relationship with insulin sensitivity. Twenty-one subjects (9 obese and 12 normal-weight) were recruited. Plasma PTX3, insulin, and glucose levels were measured before and following exercise. While our results showed lower resting PTX3 levels in obese subjects, exercise elicited similar elevations in PTX3 and insulin sensitivity in both groups. Furthermore, PTX3 area-under-curve (AUC) was correlated with glucose AUC, even when controlled for body mass index and fitness level. These findings suggest that glucose may potentially regulate PTX3 response to exercise. Further investigation is needed to verify the impact of substrate utilization on exercise-induced PTX3 elevation.
