This paper presents data relative to the ecology and bathymetric distribution of hermatypic gorgonians. The reefs were analyzed with respect to faunal composition and zonation. Ecological data such as turbidity, light penetration, salinity, dissolved oxygen and temperature were taken directly on the reefs. The main reef was carbondated (C^14 ) to determine the length of time required for development. Gorgonians were transplanted from 9 meters to 18 and 30 meters to observe growth rates and...

Ecological data such as turbidity, light penetration, salinity, dissolved oxygen and temperature were taken directly on the reefs. The main reef was carbondated (C^14 ) to determine the length of time required for development. Gorgonians were transplanted from 9 meters to 18 and 30 meters to observe growth rates and spicule changes. The relationships of zooxanthellae to the hermatypic Gorgonacea were analyzed and discussed. Experiments were conducted concerning respiration and photosynthetic rates, minimum oxygen tolerance, compensation intensities and depth, and starvation in the light as well as in the dark. Tolerance limits were establIshed for various levels of salinity, and temperature. Feeding behavior experiments were recorded and the relationship of gorgonian populations to the reef structure and community were discussed.

The equilibrium lattice constant was also determined by minimizing the total energy. The angle-resolved and x-ray photocurrents from the valence bands were determined using the NEWPOOL and XPSI codes and the calculated spectra were compared with recent experimental measurements. In the former case, the calculations were carried out for the (001) surface using s-polarized light and included the experimentally observed relaxations of the top two layers with an Al termination. The overall agreement between the theoretical and experimental spectra is good, indicating that self-energy effects are not large.

Show moreThis thesis deals with corrosion problems of underwater turbines in marine environment. The effect of a tensile stress on the uniform corrosion rate of a metal bar is studied, and an analytical model predicting the time of service of a bar under a tensile load in a corrosive environment is proposed. Stress corrosion relationships are provided for different type of alloys, and different types of relationships. Dolinskii's and Gutman's models are studied and extended to a general order polynomial, along with a Least Square and Spline Interpolation of the experimental data. In a second part, the effect of the passive film, delaying the initiation of the corrosion process, is studied. Finally, an algorithm predicting the time of service of a cracked bar is provided, using the stress corrosion assumption, along with a validation using experimental data.

This dissertation studies two independent problems, each related to a special connectivity condition in a simple graph. The first is a distance-degree condition called cohesion. Given a tree T with n vertices, we analyze the minimum integer f(T) = k, in terms of n, for which any connected k-cohesive graph G contains a copy of T, such that G-V(T) is connected. The problem comes from a generalization of an exercise by Lovasz [L7] in which it is shown that f(K2) = 5. Locke, Tracy and Voss [L5]...
Show moreThis dissertation studies two independent problems, each related to a special connectivity condition in a simple graph. Locke, Tracy and Voss [L5] have proved that in general f(T) > 2n, and in the case in which T is a path, equality is attained. Also Locke [L5.1] proved that f(T) < 4n. Here we improve the upper bound to 4n-6 when T is not a path and to 2n + 2 when T has diameter at most 4. In the particular case of K1,3 we show that f(K1,3) = 2n = 8 is attained. The conjecture that remains open is whether f(T) = 2n for any tree T on n vertices. The second problem studied here is a particular case of the well known relation between the path-connectivity and a set of long cycles, which generate the cycle space of a simple graph. The main conjecture in this topic is by Bondy [B1], and states that if G is a 3-connected graph, with minimum degree at least d and with at least 2d vertices, then every cycle of G can be written as the symmetric difference of an odd number of cycles, each of whose lengths are at least 2d-1. Hartman [H2], Locke [L1, L2, L3], Barovich [BL] and Teng [L6] have proved results related to this conjecture. Here we show that 2-connected, 6-path-connected graphs with at least 9 vertices and minimum degree at least 3 are 6-generated. And more generally, we prove that if a graph G is 2-connected, k-path-connected, and contains a long cycle, then G is (k + 1)-generated, up to some cases which are characterized. The conjecture [L3] of whether, for some constant m, 1/2 < m < 1, every k-path-connected graph is mk-generated, remains open.

However, there are some holes in the database, particularly for non-megafauna such as small gastropods. I have chosen to focus on two particular families of gastropod, the Neritidae and the Littorinidae. I have researched species of each family about which there is no information in the species inventory, and written information sheets on each according to the format of the inventory. These sheets will be submitted to the Species Inventory webpage.

The library underwent 50oC heat shocks to select for cells expressing an aconitase mutant that increased the cells’ resistance to heat shock-induced oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been implicated as a theory of cellular aging. Isolated aconitase mutants with increased oxidative stress resistance will be assayed for increased lifespan, which would support the free radical theory of aging and implicate aconitase as an important determinant of cellular aging.

Show moreWe characterize Godel's philosophy of mathematics, as presented in his published works, with possible clarification and support provided by his posthumously published drafts, as being formulated by Godel as an optimistic neo-Kantian epistemology superimposed on a Platonic metaphysics. We further consider that Godel's more general philosophical worldview can also be characterized as such. We provide a philosophical interpretation of Godel's rotating universe solutions to Einstein's field equations that is contrary to Godel's own philosophical interpretation. We compare Godel's worldview with our materialistic worldview. Our materialistic worldview developed from interpreting Godelian type results, but stands in contrast to Godel's worldview. Finally, our materialistic worldview serves to further explicate, by contrast , Godel's Platonic world view.

- SOME PREDICTIVE AND ANALYTICAL APPLICATIONS OF ISO-COST AND ISO-QUANT CURVES TO MAXIMIZE BUDGET DISTRIBUTION IN ACHIEVING A MEASURABLE GOAL.
- Creator
- KRUEGER, ANN., Florida Atlantic University
- Abstract/Description
-
In this study a model for the educational administrator is devised using the iso-cost and iso-quant relationships of linear programming. A strategy to identify the maximizing combination of variables to achieve stated goals, given constraints such as time and money, is presented. Also included are examples demonstrating the model's use as an analytical and as a predictive tool in decision making.

Show moreThe time history of the abundances of 13 nuclei and the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic variables in the burning zone of a detonation wave were numerically followed in detail by coupling a nuclear reaction network to the Rankine-Hugoniot relations and accurate equations of state. A number of computations were performed for material with initial densities and temperatures in the range 10^9 < p < 10^11(g/cm^3) and 3 x 10^8 K, respectively, and compositions consisting of C^12 and O^16, and O^16, Mg^24, and Si^28. From such computations it is concluded that: (1) the nuclear rea-tion rate doubling timescale approximation gives an accurate nuclear burning timescale, (2) the propagation of a detonation wave fueled by O^16 at very high densities is virtually assured, (3) the correct energy release is obtained assuming nuclear statistical equilibrium behind the detonation wave, and this latter assumption is good, (4) the Chapman- Jouguet hypothesis is adequate in spite of the fact that the actual form of the detonation wave is more likely that of a weak detonation.

Show moreIn this thesis, we will explore different kinds of metamaterial or architectural structural problems, including structures composed of heterogeneous media with bi periodic sub-structures, discrete structures with sub-elements or continuous structures with discrete attached sub-elements. The thesis is composed of seven parts. After having introduced the specificities of metamaterial mechanics, the second chapter is devoted to the vibration of discrete beam problems called Hencky bar-chain model in a stochastic framework. It is shown that the lattice beam behaves as a nonlocal continuous beam problem, both in the deterministic and the non-deterministic analyses. The third chapter considers the vibration of continuous beams with the introduction of shear effects and attached periodically oscillators. A discussion on beam modelling, for example Timoshenko beam models or truncated Timoshenko beam models is included. It is shown that the bandgap phenomenon observed for metamaterial beams can be accurately captured by a truncated Timoshenko beam model which means the last term in the Timoshenko equation is not that important.
