The Seminole people have a very unique history. They are descended from the Creek nation and formed two distinct language groups. Show moreThe Seminole people have a very unique history. They are descended from the Creek nation and formed two distinct language groups. Along with these language differences, the Seminoles were divided about whether to isolate or assimilate with the new, strange settlers that invaded their homeland. The Seminoles were given opportunities to determine their future within the United States in the 1900s, but divisions continued and expanded into a question of acculturation or retaining a tribal identity. In 1957, when the Seminoles formed their first tribal government, they were very reliant on the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs economically, and therefore were led politically somewhat by that department. With the tribal administration of Howard Tommie from 1971-1979, a new "middle ground" emerged, a synthesis combining American ways and the unique qualities that belong to only a Seminole.

The early economic and social development of Fort Lauderdale began in the late nineteenth century. Today’s well-known Stranahan House in downtown Fort Lauderdale was originally the Stranahan Trading Post and General Store, which was in operation from 1894 to 1906. Adjacent to this building was a campground, which was used by early Florida white settlers and Seminole Indians. Today’s well-known Stranahan House in downtown Fort Lauderdale was originally the Stranahan Trading Post and General Store, which was in operation from 1894 to 1906. Adjacent to this building was a campground, which was used by early Florida white settlers and Seminole Indians. This thesis presents a study of 204 whole glass bottles recovered from the Stranahan campground archaeological site (8BD259). The analysis confirms that a greater proportion of the bottles were used when the property was a campsite. Moreover, soda/mineral water, not alcohol, was the more common type of beverage consumed at the site during this time.

Fresh and aged unispecific samples have been analyzed using IP-RPHPLC and PDA in order to reveal the chlorophylls and carotenoids alterations during senescence and death. Aging studies showed that cyanobacterial chlorophyll- a was destroyed faster than carotenoids in room oxic conditions. The reverse was found for the other eukaryotic species. Species with high chlorophyllase activity produced phytol free chlorophyll derivatives during death. The rate of chlorophyll-a destruction was; room oxic > room anoxic > cold anoxic. Pyropheophorbide-a was often the final product of type-I chlorophyll-a degradation. The conversion from fucoxanthin to fucoxanthinol was observed. Chlorophyll-c was found to be destroyed faster than chlorophyll-a. The quantitative relationship of certain "biomarker" pigments (e.g. fucoxanthin, zeaxanthin) to chlorophyll-a was found not to change significantly during the first 1--2 months senescence-death scenarios. This aids the field of chemotaxonomy in that valid estimations may still be made when phytoplankton populations contain senescent individuals.
