It is not clear if the effect is the same for bilingually developing children and whether their oral skills in one language can transfer to reading comprehension in the other. The current longitudinal study followed 72 Spanish-English bilingual children (42 girls, 30 boys) and examined the extent to which early oral language proficiency in English and in Spanish were related to later reading comprehension development within- and across-languages. Multilevel models revealed significant within-language relations between oral language skills at 5 years and reading comprehension growth from 6 to 8 years in both English and Spanish. Additionally, English oral skill predicted Spanish reading comprehension, whereas Spanish oral skill was unrelated to English reading comprehension. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

While most of these attitudes are geared towards gray wolves, as gray wolves are the most common and prominent, unfavorable perceptions have also extended to the less well-known red wolf. This study compares two red wolf reintroduction programs, one in the Tennessee-Kentucky area and the other in North Carolina, as well as the Yellowstone Gray Wolf Reintroduction program. After analyzing these three programs, it can be concluded that the perceptions towards wolves regardless of the type of wolf or location remain largely negative and that wolves continue to face persecution.

The primary purpose of this study was to discover what it was about these women that made it possible for them to succeed in their business roles. An open-end questionnaire designed to serve as a written case history device was used to gain information relative to these women's occupational experiences, personal characteristics, educational background and their own opinions relating to their career histories. Inasmuch as it appears that these women who have attained executive positions seem to evidence personal and occupational histories that indicate similarities, this study contributes perspective and lays the groundwork for more specific and in-depth future studies.

Most extant research on Muslim communities and religious institutions comes from Europe. Moreover, while seeking an opinion or firsthand knowledge of religious opinions in Muslim communities, the male voice takes precedence. This qualitative research investigates Muslim women’s experiences at two mosques in south Florida. I aimed to gain a better understanding of mosques’ impact on women’s religious practices, their adaptation to American society, and their views on male-dominated religious places, including the topic of gender segregation. By using narrative data collected from participant observation and interviews with informants, this study demonstrates that Muslim women at these south Florida mosques engage in their religious and social activities, creating a meaningful space to worship in the mosque while following the dominant patriarchal norms in the religious institution. The findings from this study also highlight the need for a more extensive quantitative analysis of women's demands for inclusion and equality in mosques and Muslim men's (including imams') responses to such requests as well as the significance of generational, age, and national-ethnic differences when it comes to the issue of gender in mosques.

The purpose of this study was to understand the personal and professional meaning-making of breaking through the glass ceiling for women who have held or currently hold the position of president in higher education. The research methodology selected for this study was qualitative with a phenomenological design. There were two guiding research questions, which serve to understand the essence of the experiences of women who serve or have served in the role of president in higher education. The research questions are (a) how do women perceive the impact of the glass ceiling and/or the glass cliff on negotiating the role of university president from ascension to attainment? and (b) how do women university presidents perceive the price they have paid, personally and professionally, for breaking through the glass ceiling? The study sample size consisted of seven current or former women university presidents. The data collection method was semi-structured interviews. This study served to provide insight that may help identify support systems for women in the workplace, changes in perceptions of women in leadership, and how gender roles unfold in both the personal and professional lives of women university presidents

The results indicate that feminist identification and feminist consciousness are separate but related constructs and that overall feminist collective identity among women is weak. The findings indicate a need to make clear which dimension--feminist identification or feminist consciousness--is being used in efforts to understand women's feminist collective identity and how these three concepts interact with cohort, employment status, income, education, race, and marital status.

McKibbin and Shackelford (2011) state that males of many species have evolved strategies to sexually coerce and rape females. It is for this reason that researchers have speculated that several female traits or behaviors evolved to reduce the risks of being raped (McKibbin & Shackelford, 2011). The rationale behind the proposed experiment examined whether parents’ childrearing practices and women’s plasticity during childhood may have influenced the development of psychological mechanisms in response to the recurrent adaptive problem of rape. Analyses showed that maternal support during childhood predicted how frequently rape-avoidance behaviors were exhibited by women as adults. Analyses also showed that father absence was related to earlier sexual activity but age of menarche did not predict and was not associated with any rape-avoidance behaviors.

That this number is declining is well documented. External factors blamed for this disparity are many; school board prejudices, community attitudes, and the organization of school systems, are but a few. This study is important because it investigates the intrinisic motivation of women. The question considered is, Are women motivated to seek administrative jobs? The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between motivation and employment of women in education. The data was collected by giving David Winter's Power Motive test to both sexes of administrators and teachers. Winter's instrument assesses power motivation from stories subjects make up to describe a series of ambiguous pictures. Stories were scored using Winter's scoring system. It was determined that there was no significant difference in the power motive of men and women, whether they were teachers or administrators. There was, however, a very significant difference between the power motive scores of teachers and administrators, with teachers having a higher power motive score.

Study 1A included 99 women who self-reported acts they do or might do specifically to avoid being raped. Study 1B included 144 women who filled out a preliminary inventory of rape avoidance behaviors. I used their responses to construct the RAI. In Study 3, I develop and test a number of hypotheses derived from evolutionary psychological theory, using data derived from the sample of women in Study 1B. I conclude by discussing limitations and possible future directions for rape avoidance research.

Show moreThe politicized use of humor in accented cinema is a tool for negotiating particular formations of identity, such as sexuality, gender, ethnicity, and class. The body of work produced by contemporary women filmmakers working in Australia, specifically Tracey Moffatt, Monica Pellizzari, and Clara Law, illustrates how these directors have employed critical humor as a response to their multiple marginalization as women, Australian, and accented filmmakers. In their works, humor functions as a critical tool to deconstruct the contradictions in dominant discourses as they relate to (neo)colonial, racist, globalized, patriarchal, and displaced pasts and presents. Produced within Australian national cinema, but emerging from experiences of geographical displacements that defy territorial borders, their films illuminate how critical humor can inflect such accepted categories as the national constitution of a cinema, film genre, and questions of exile and diaspora. Critical humor thus consti tutes a cinematic signifying practice able, following Luigi Pirandello's description of umorismo, to decompose the filmic text, and as a tool for an ideological critique of cinema and its role in (re)producing discourses of the nation predicated on the dominant categories of whiteness and masculinity. The study offers a theoretical framework for decoding humor in a film text, focusing on the manipulation of cinematic language, and it provides a model for a criticism that wishes to heighten the counter-hegemonic potential of cinematic texts, by picking up on the humorous, contradictory openings of the text and widening them through a parallel dissociating process., Finally, critical humor in the accented cinema of women filmmakers like Moffatt, Pellizzari, and Law is shown to constitute a form of translation and negotiation performed between the national, monologic constraints of film production and cinematic language, the heteroglossia of the global imaginaries that have traveled since the beginning with film technology, and the local and diasporic accents informing a filmmaker's unique style and perspective.

Her stated aim is to provide people of the African diaspora with tools to face the world more confidently. She is particularly interested in the plight of women in postcolonial Caribbean countries whose lives are determined by imperialist and patriarchal discourses. The tools she provides are linguistic. By integrating Jamaican Creole and English Brodber enacts her protagonists' struggles to find a language capable of expressing their reality and opposing colonizing fictions. The novels chart the transition from child to adult of two characters, Nellie and Ella. They grow up in Jamaica during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This was a time when confusing class, color and gender ideologies, promulgated by written and oral traditions, inhibited healthy identity formation. Migration to America sufficiently distances them from Jamaica to allow for an interrogation of the conflicting messages about womanhood which Jamaican society promulgates. On returning home, they learn that the imperialist and patriarchal ideals that shape society can be challenged. In particular, they realize the power of words to effect change. Through a new critical awareness born of personal experience and a revisiting of history, they also learn that Jamaican culture can nurture as well as harm them.
