It has become increasingly popular within the last 5 years and is common indoors and outdoors. Florida Atlantic University (FAU) protects people from the health hazards of secondhand tobacco smoke by having implemented a no tobacco policy. Due to the undiscovered health risks caused by vaping and its no tobacco nature, it is unclear whether or not FAU should ban vaping in their policy. In order to gauge how college students, faculty, and staff feel about vaping, I will be conducting a university wide survey that will show 1) previous knowledge of vaping 2) stigma associated with vaping and 3) policies that should be implemented concerning indoor vaping. This will be done by creating a pilot first. The results from the survey could be used to influence FAU policy.

An Organic Chemistry Lab experiment is being developed and adapted from work recently published by Maity and Lepore [1] investigating the cyclization of substituted β-alkynyl hydrazines to yield azaproline derivatives. The mechanism of this reaction is putatively driven by cation-π interaction of alkynyl hydrazine with a tetrabutylammonium ion. The mechanism of this reaction is putatively driven by cation-π interaction of alkynyl hydrazine with a tetrabutylammonium ion. This experiment will present students with a cutting-edge research concept to explore the role of tetrabutylammonium in the cyclization of substituted β-alkynyl hydrazines. Reaction kinetics will be probed by thin-layer chromatography and azaproline derivative product(s) will be characterized by IR spectroscopy. Ultimately, our goal is to implement a modern research-based, cost-effective, and safe bioorganic experiment into Florida Atlantic University’s undergraduate Organic Chemistry Laboratory curriculum.

Show moreOver 40 million people in the United States are living in poverty today. The effects of living in disadvantaged circumstances increases the individual’s likelihood of experiencing persistent anxiety, which can lead to chronic health conditions. Studies have associated persistent anxiety with cardiovascular compromise as a result of decreased levels of heart rate variability (HRV). The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between anxiety and heart rate variability in parents or guardians of children in Head Start, a federally funded program for families with low-incomes. A descriptive correlational design comparing the scores on the PROMIS anxiety tool with HRV as measured by the emWave biometric instrument will be used. The sample consists of 32 participants. Data will be analyzed using bivariate correlations. Increased levels of anxiety and decreased heart rate variability are anticipated outcomes of this study. Findings will assist in identifying health risks in this vulnerable population.

Show moreThe navigational system at Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton campus does not provide efficient travel for visitors, students, and faculty. Results from a survey shows 8 out of 10 people are being misdirected around the Boca Raton campus causing delays, traffic, and frustration. The architectural design of the Boca Raton campus buildings makes navigating even more difficult because of their identical qualities. The directory maps on campus fail to inform current position, are visually overwhelming and are outdated. From the research collected, we will create a cohesive navigational system that makes travel easier for visitors, students, and faculty. The new navigational system will comprise of a redesigned directory, numeric building signage, route markers, and an instruction manual.

Our proposal is to collect all recycling receptacles and create a unified system that is easily accessible to all visitors of the FAU campus. Our team of designers will work to develop symbols, a cohesive color scheme, a map of campus displaying receptacle locations, and a poster campaign to promote the new recycling system. Along with the new visual language we will be implementing, we will be decommissioning the current receptacles to instill one single receptacle for all outdoor uses and a smaller size of that same container for indoor environments. Ultimately, we aim to improve the rate at which students, faculty, and staff decrease the ecological footprint of FAU and increase the campus’ sustainability.

Insight will be sought through focus groups and phone interviews to explore what degree of interest there is for a Leadership Studies Program here at FAU and to learn what practices work best at other institutions that have established Leadership Studies programs. We will gain this information by asking students what they believe are three skills and attributes of an effective leader, how the new Introduction to Leadership course (LDR 2010) has assisted students in their leadership pursuits, and what their level of interest is for having a program. We will speak with individuals at institutions to gauge what is working for their Leadership programs. With this data, we seek to showcase the desire (or not) for establishing a Leadership Studies Program at FAU.

This research examines the relationship between feeder canals and nutrient levels in South Florida’s intracoastal waterways. Water samples will be collected from two sites, one with many feeder canals and one with no feeder canals. Nutrient levels from these sites will be measured at three different tide levels, high tide, low tide and slack tide. A comparison of the results between sites and type of tide will be done to determine if the presence of feeder canals influences the levels of nutrients in the surrounding intracoastal waters.

However, the modern audience might not realize that it took almost 70 years after Bach’s death for his music to emerge as a part of an important cultural heritage. Even though some of Bach’s organ pieces were continually played in smaller settings, the wider audience only became exposed to his music after the success of Felix Mendelssohn’s performance of the St. Matthew Passion in 1829. It was this concert that catapulted Bach among the ranks of the important Baroque composers such as Georg Frideric Handel or Antonio Vivaldi.

Show moreThis study is to design an autonomous underwater robotic laboratory for different missions within the Arctic environment. Missions involve locating natural resources such as oil deposits, determining if the area is a feasible location for deployment of sea and air systems for many operations, and to obtain water and mineral samples to study and monitor the changing Arctic environment. Thus far, we demonstrated the feasibility of an autonomous walking robot that can be used to explore the Arctic by walking under a sheet of ice. A key component of this is that by controlling the robot’s buoyancy the robot will be capable of walking upside down under a wooden plank. We water proofed a commercially available model robot and carried out the experiment in the Hydrodynamics Laboratory. The preliminary investigation contributes to an internal proposal submitted to I-Sense Internal Fund Program.

While the causes are multifactorial, increased consumption of away-from-home (versus at-home) meals has been shown to contribute to higher calorie and fat intakes. This study’s objective was to examine food/beverage provisions at faith-based children/youth events. Direct observation methodology was used for data collection from 10 churches (two to five observations/church) in Southeast FL. Food/beverages served on 31 occasions (26 meals, 5 non-meals) were documented/analyzed for nutrient content (Food Processor software). Main dishes were mostly pizza and pasta-based casseroles (45%) with white bread/rolls (side dish) (27%). Vegetables (non-potato) were served twice, and fruits five times but seldom eaten. Provided beverages were primarily sugar-sweetened (87%). Desserts/snack-foods were served at 55% of events. Foods were generally high in fat and/or sugar and contributed little to needed fruit / vegetable servings. These findings provide nutritional evidence to initiate dialogues within faith-communities about healthier food provisions at children/youth-related activities.

Those Americans are called fans- the ones that support the teams, fill the seats, and cheer them on from home. Occasionally these professional sports teams decide to relocate to another city, state, etc. Relocation has become increasingly prevalent in the past few seasons. This puts the dedicated fans in a difficult situation in which they can remain loyal to the city or the specific team itself. In order to analyze how someone would react to their favorite professional sports team being relocated, we developed a survey to addresses the underlying question of would your favorite team remain your favorite team even if they relocated. Our results found that the decision to remain a fan or switch to another team depends on gender and the level of education.

It became evident that the rod’s rotation caused the oil/water interface to curve upward around the center of rotation, reaching up to the bottom of the rotating rod. Visible rings of water formed around the rod, starting at the bottom (at the oil/water interface) and ascending the rod, one by one. The water rings remained separate and ascended the rod until they eventually dispersed into the oil. Such quantization of water into rings has never been reported on before and represents a novel area of investigation in fluid dynamics. This study aims at obtaining quality photographic evidence to explain this phenomenon.
